Wow, look at these two economists. No shit. It comes out of taxes.

College should be free for nurses, doctors, dentist, social workers, teachers and other vital groups.

For everyone else, it should be affordable. A student should be able to pay for their accounting, business, history, Chinese, etc. degrees working part time like they used to in the 70's.

I dunno man. I agree in principle that certain "vital groups" should be made to be able to attain affordable education in order to ensure that the best of the best end up in these roles (not hindered by finances), but I also think you need to realize that these professions are generally high paying (apart from a couple mentioned), and therefore have the most ability to repay their student debt. For this reason I don't know that free education for "vital groups" is really a great policy choice. It's not terribly progressive.

I think the high pay may come from the cost and time for getting an education. I am sure the pay would probably drop if anyone could take a shot at being a nurse. Too many nurses might end up being made.

Nah dude. If it's anything like here in Canada the number of class spots is restricted by each professional organization, which drives up wages. Otherwise, why wouldn't school be pumping out 1000s of MDs to cash in on those 75k tuition fees?

It defeats the purpose if we let some professional union put quotas.

How do you people feel about summer breaks? I think for K-12, school should be year round.

You just pitch provocative ideas rapid fire without ever really defending them. I think you're just getting a rise out of seeing us debate what you know to be mostly absurd ideas.

EDIT-  with that said, it's one of the few things keeping this site going.

I have no idea when daylight savings time is. I just rely on the news telling me and expect my phone and television to update themselves.

Nah, might run into Jay trying to flex over there. Better to stay in shallow waters.

His idea was stupid because everything he listed doesn't actually require college, but instead can be learned in trade schools. He's stuck in his "college is for getting a white collar job" mentality.

College is supposed to do nothing of the sort. It's only been bastardized in recent years and marketed to the public in order to drive up enrollment. No one NEEDS a real classical college education, it's a fucking luxury. You need it as much as you need an Apple iWatch.

Also, his, and any, list would be entirely arbitrary.

singular people don't NEED a real classical college education. But society does, and in turn some singular people DO need it.
