tech nerds have been experimenting with ketamine for a long time.
in general all the tech-workers became interested in microdosing, i.e. taking far below a dose required to make you trip or have any noticeable effects, because of the supposed boost to creativity or intellection when doing their 14-hour coding marathons or whatever. it's a particularly utilitarian, even joyless, approach to drugs. 'how can i maximise my performance gains in the workplace to enrich my company more'.
of course, the oligarch class and their recreational use probably resembles something more like out of pasolini's '120 days of sodom', and less with the carefully titrated doses to precision-engineer a 'flow state' in their python project.
there's also that basic and predictable dynamic of 'chronic high-achievers and exam-grinding nerds finally graduate, start to get paid a lot, move out of their tiger parents' reach, and discover drugs and alcohol'. mixed in with years of being introverted or not developing their social skills so they could min-max their stanford application. it's a potent cocktail.
i think everyone should take MDMA at least once. for the first few doses at least (that is, before the day-after comedowns start to become noticeable, and while the impact of neurotoxicity is still 3 orders of magnitude less than that from ordinary alcohol), it's essentially a free ticket to an incredibly euphoric, joyous, socially connecting experience. hence why it's being researched so much for chronic and incurable depression, or PTSD, etc. it delivers a gentle 'breakthrough' with barely no risks.
i would say everyone should take mushrooms or acid at least once in their life too, but things can get a little more weird and mind-bending on full-on psychedelics than MDMA. MDMA is basically just a biohack for ecstastic feeling. psychedelics are more 'through the looking glass'. anecdotally, they give the best and longest lasting positive after-effects, though. no toxicity whatsoever, no 'comedowns' or physical drawbacks, no complaints from the kidneys or liver. just an afterglow and a sense of peace that can last for months. like an SSRI scaled up to thermo-nuclear efficacy.
avoid ketamine. gradually turns your bladder into a punctured bicycle inner tube, feels mildly weird and disregulated at microdoses, and plain weird and dissociated at full doses. i can see why a self-hating insecure person like musk would latch onto it. it's like getting addicted to an anaesthetic. no doubt he enjoys the oblivion and vacation from feeling, well, anything.
