An Ottawa homeless shelter says protesters from the "Freedom Convoy" harassed staff and volunteers Saturday, demanding food from their soup kitchen, and one shelter client was allegedly assaulted.

The convoy, billed as a protest against COVID-19 mandates, brought thousands of people to downtown Ottawa. While the bulk of the crowd remained on Parliament Hill and was largely peaceful, the Shepherds of Good Hope said on social media that there was an incident at its shelter.

"Earlier today, our staff and volunteers experienced harassment from convoy protestors seeking meals from our soup kitchen," the Shepherds said on Twitter. "The individuals were given meals to diffuse the conflict. Management was then informed of the issue and no further meals were given to protesters. Our soup kitchen is committed to providing meals to people experiencing and at risk of homelessness in Ottawa. This weekend’s events have caused significant strain to our operations at an already difficult time."

I read that these protest people also recently posted notice on some of the bars announcing that they would be drinking for free (not a suggestion if you know what's good for you!). The bars closed. Also parked on monument grounds, so that's a thing too. Real patriots.

"Trump Won" at a Canadian protest, rofl.

Silly defund people, any attempt to rein in cops in and they "won't want to do their jobs."

Saw a picture of the funeral those guys attended. They had snipers and God knows what else to protect them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had antitank weapons ready to go at some vans. NYPD ATGM.

Surprisingly muted media response to the guy killing the two cops. Or did he not kill both cops? I really haven't heard much about it beyond a few headlines. Collective shrug in NYC area media.

Maybe a growing disinfatuation. I don't personally begrudge them their funeral processions, but maybe these grander and grander events aren't a good look when the police have been used to break up far less disruptive gatherings.

Those photos of cop-packed subways are pretty unsettling in light of police violence, questionable work culture, and their adversarial relationship with the rest of the populace. Wouldn't feel comfortable down there.

The color pattern and choreographed motorcycle thing looks fascist except they cucked themselves with the pink and purple lights.

Looks like they are going to march on city hall and demand mayor Eric Adams appointment Bo Dietl NYPD commissioner for life.

I should start a flag company now and sell them marching banners for their next great rally at Yankee Stadium.

I still remember the Fox Lake cop that died and how there was a funeral procession for him and such a big deal made. Later evidence showed he was not a good cop.

I was around for a few. I still remember the one for the four cops who were executed in the Lakewood coffee house. The memorial at the site is a reminder each time I drive by. There's even an elementary school named for them.

(Underperforming, according to US news. Maybe Mac can provide some insight.)

But have the police ever flooded the highways and city streets in record numbers, at great cost, in reverence for someone they'd mistakenly killed? If I die in my underwear with a Wii nunchuck in my hand because a bunch of cops busted into the wrong address and thought I was pointing a gun at them, I want something named after me. The court building, maybe. As a reminder.

I am less interested in the reading and writing scores than I am in the discipline records.

A lot of discipline issues generally means dysfunctional learning environments. Low reading and math scores just means a lot of kids aren't testing well. Which is easier to fix: violence, disruption, and disorder or test scores? Stick a smart kid in a room with a bunch of dummies and a teacher who tries hard and the kid will be no worse off. Stick a smart kid in a chaotic room (where people throw things and talk over the teachers. Break and steak stuff etc.) and they will really be fucked.

All of the demographic info that was posted is no help unless you are looking to buy a home in the area and want an idea of the people your kid will grow up with.

That reminds me of the funny bit about the school Jay's kids go to across the street. Apparently it has a lot refugees from Latin America. I wonder if he even looked up the school.

I bet they demand overtime for attending those events, and wouldn't go if they didn't get paid.

It's interesting that it listed the three stats but didn't go so far as to graph performance to teacher:student ratio and % economically disadvantaged students, but maybe they didn't want to get into the business of specifically identifying a trend.

I remember making a lot of infographics while doing school admin stuff for extra credit. Wall of charts. Maybe someday you can delegate your office work to an eager high schooler for credits or something.

The site does list the student to teacher ratio. 14:1. Pretty good actually. The whole school really isn't that bad. The thing that really bothers me is that they have 1 guidance counselor for 600 kids. But that is just how it goes.

Here is a local school that was closed by the state due to a legion of issues. This was a failed schooled. Compare the stats from Four Horseman school and the below school.

There's some pretty sad schools out there. This one is underperforming to district averages iirc, but not the worst in the country. Didn't need to check stats to estimate that.

It's attached I think to a junior high that performs decently, and across what used to be one of those high schools where students weren't allowed on the second floor because the building would collapse.

I've been to the YMCA in the area.

A jumbo gym with a superfluous amount of floorspace. I haven't had a membership in years (kind of put off by the prospect of going back to swim where people literally exfoliate their feet now), but I made good use of the pool and racquetball courts. I've only been to about three or four different ones, so maybe they have smaller format stuff.

Brietbart article complaining about American Olympic athletes "gushing over" their accomodations in China.

“I have something incredible to share,” said US athlete Summer Britcher in a TikTok video, in which she shows off and details the luxurious remote-controlled beds the athletes sleep in at the Olympic Village in Beijing. In a follow-up clip, Britcher was seen happily tucked in and said, “I’m in Zero-G mode now. It’s phenomenal.”

More than that, videos showing athletes learning Chinese Kung Fu, high-tech setups unveiled in the villages, such as robots bartenders and meals delivered from the ceiling in the restaurants of the Beijing Winter Olympics villages also went viral online.

… Many athletes who’ve been approaching the end of their Olympic careers also thanked China’s efforts in holding the once in a four-year international sports event during such a difficult time as pandemic still rages across the world
Dang, I wish I could hang out there for a few weeks.

The Brietbart comments are a bunch of jealous old white people. People advocating to fight China in one breath and then taking about shooting liberals the next.

You would have to be really dumb to not profit off of Chinese grift if you can. The most American thing you can do is to sell out to an adversary.
