US Capitol rioter gets 5 years in jail after throwing fire extinguisher at police
https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/17/politics … index.html

(CNN)A Florida man who enthusiastically attacked police at the US Capitol on January 6 with a fire extinguisher, a wooden plank and a pole was sentenced to more than five years in prison on Friday, the longest sentence for a Capitol rioter thus far.

Robert Scott Palmer is the first person to be sentenced for the felony of assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. His 63-month sentence could set a benchmark for the more than 140 others who face the same charge.

"Every day we are hearing about reports of antidemocratic factions, people plotting potential violence in 2024," District Judge Tanya Chutkan said as she handed down the sentence. "It has to be made clear that trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, assaulting law enforcement, is going to be met with certain punishment. Not staying at home, not watching Netflix, not doing what you were doing before you got arrested."

Palmer was first publicly identified by online sleuths, who tracked him down through pictures and video of Palmer in an American flag jacket brawling outside the Capitol. According to his plea agreement, Palmer sprayed a fire extinguisher at a line of police and twice threw the empty canister. When he refused to back down, Palmer was shot in the stomach with a rubber bullet.

"I wonder if the people who are usually before me," Chutkan said of Black and minority defendants she presides over, "if they had tried to storm the Capitol that day, would they have been met with rubber bullets. I suspect not."

Chutkan, an appointee of former President Barack Obama and former public defender, has emerged as perhaps the harshest judge for January 6 defendants. Seven cases in front of her have reached sentencing, and all seven have received jail time ranging from 14 days to more than five years behind bars.

During the hearing, Palmer said that he saw TV host Rachel Maddow do a segment about his case on MSNBC and was "horrified, absolutely devastated to see myself on there. Just to see the coldness and the calculation going up those steps with the fire extinguisher to spray those officers."

Palmer also said in a letter to the judge that he now realizes former President Donald Trump "lied" to supporters about the election.

"They kept spitting out the false narrative about a stolen election and how it was 'our duty' to stand up to tyranny," Palmer wrote. "Little did I realize that they were the tyrannical ones desperate to hold onto power at any cost even by creating the chaos the knew would happen with such rhetoric."
I'd need more context for the judge's comments about "the people who are usually before me." Without something leading into that, it seems a bit out of nowhere.

Of the highlighted, yeah...

Interestingly, some conservatives have been pretty quiet in 2021 about the Jan 6 insurrection, seemingly embarrassed. Not something they like to talk about. I'm not sure how much of that will reflect in 2022 polls though. Very sure it'll be much the same as it usually is for red voters.

The context for that statement is the numerous black and minority people that have been killed by police for much less than throwing a fire extinguisher at them, whereas this clown only got a rubber bullet.

How many do police kill during riots? I know there's a lot of brutality/abuse.

I can't recall any cop killings during the G.F. riots. Some people put in comas but no deaths. The rioters killed a handful of people. Single digits.

More people probably did die at the capital on Jan 6th.

I'm not sure how relevant of a musing it is even if true in some cases. Would like to know what worked her up to the op-ed. Daniel Shaver, of course, was white.

How many officers were assaulted with fire extinguishers during those riots? You generally don't see the same level of violence towards the police as was documented during the Capitol riot, which of course is very ironic considering the underlying issues driving the BLM protests vs. the political ideologies of those Capitol riotiers.

blue lives matter was only ever the thinnest alibi for outright authoritarianism anyway. populists don't respect law and order any more than anarchist rioters. they just want their own way.

I saw the videos of black bloc shooting large fireworks into crowds of cops while besieging police stations. They burned at least one down. The police who interacted with the GF protestors were prepared while the Capital cops were caught off guard.

I do agree that if it was BLM besieging the capital the police response would be very different. But only to a point. I don't think the police that stood their ground and fought the Trump people would have instead decided to fire live ammo in the crowds. Many of the cops that took pictures and hanged out with the Trump people would probably have been in panic mode and reacted poorly instead of having relaxed conversations.

Do you think the people who attacked the capital deserved to get gunned down? I am not so sure.

Not sure what the Biden administration is thinking restarting the student loan program. I don't know how to get past the fact that Trump stopped the program while Biden restarted it. It's all federal money anyhow.

He's genuflecting to his overlords instead of fulfilling campaign promises. Who would have thought!? Noooo, not Biden too!

The Biden administration has extended the pause on student loans to May 1, pushing back the restart of payments for tens of millions of borrowers whose loans have been effectively frozen for nearly two years.
The student loan debt is now the national debt. We will just raise the student debt ceiling every few months

The guy recorded himself doing it. They doxed him, and his family. Father's business is getting review bombed. Had to delete the company website and their LinkedIns.

In other LGB news.

What's sad is that it was an alright bird impression that could have lead to a bird anecdote with some sort of twist ending, but then it just became a rant against liberals who like to cite facts (self-own much?). Recall the title of the Trump Jr. book I posted in the other thread, very ironic stuff.

Deeply twisted hearing the Fox crowd accuse people of parroting the television.

lol, rewatched a bit of it. scoffingly, "facts and figures! facts and figures!" that guy has probably been easily brushed off in internet arguments and he can't let it go.

They've been doing that for a while. "Go watch CNN!" they said. I'm sure there's some people who also religiously watch cable news like conservatives, but nobody I know did. If anything, one would read news from reputable sites instead of tuning in to a news-opinion-entertainment melange.

I saw a video exploring conservative "comedy" a while back, and while the thesis was nothing new (tl;dw - letting ideology and the cruelty be ahead of trying to be funny), it was quite cringe-inducing to watch more examples of what passes as humor there.

One of the bits in Dunham's shows I caught on passing by that stuck with me was when his grouchy old puppet was all like "learn the language," and the audience exploded into cheer. He's got himself a nice nook in an insecure audience "middle" America. A safe place to be buttheads about marginalized groups.

Also Dunham, "I'm not conservative but," https://www.distractify.com/p/jeff-dunh … ical-party

I like the description that conservative "comedy" likes to punch down rather than punch up. Carlin, by contrast, punched out. Into the audience. He'd rip them a new one and they'd laugh and applaud. Much more interesting of a sight.

@mac, think I'll pass on that movie. Dilbert can go watch it in my stead.
