Honestly I do think were one to become an ex president there are better ways to spend one's time than writing a pile of memoirs. He already published two before becoming president. Assuming similar number of pages for his second volume that'll be 2500 pages from Obama on Obama.

it's beach-and-bogseat reading. leisurely crawl. you can cover 150-200 pages of it in a session, i imagine. 2500 pages is not that much for a writer's career. he's not fucking henry james.

"No! Everything has to be reduced to an HBO miniseries pocked with fictional characters and events to be digestible!"

I'll add Truman, Grant and Lincoln to writings worth checking out. Why England Slept by Kennedy is on my to-do list, though not a bio. I don't know why I haven't gotten to it. Maybe I just wasn't aware of it.

I would love to read a presidential memoir by Lincoln but only if he wrote it with the certain knowledge of how and why he was assassinated. It would be interesting hearing his thoughts on that.

Lincoln's assassination was a cover-up for him to, after reuniting the country, return to a life of vampire slaying.

That movie took a lot of artistic liberty when it came to hunting vampires.

I'm not sure why it even exist. The movie seemed like a legitimate attempt at making an action movie rather than what should have been a goofy comedy. Also who thought this was a good idea?

it was that weird phase of YA novels or graphic novels or whatever and their adaptations. 'let's do classic history with zombies and werewolves! ironically but not ironically!'

glad that shit died. it was even more infantilised and goofy than star wars.

Yup. I remember seeing the cover of that book in an university book store back in 2010.

It's historical abuse but at least abuse for entertainment and not abuse in the service of convincing someone to endorse eliminating corporate taxes because Ben Franklin didn't like paying taxes on a whore house he owned or something.

knowingly camp and kitsch, yes. the same era as those sharknado movies and whatever.

let's be honest, it's probably more bearable than Hamilton.

I tried to watch Hamilton with a class 2 years back as an end of year reward. I had no idea what was going on. The kids had no idea what was going on. Just a lot of dancing and movement and noise. Like try to follow what is going on in this clip without reading the lyrics.

So about half an hour into I turned it off and told them to play with their celllphones.

Would have been better if it was a Slayer collection of songs.

Catcher in the Rye vs. Bigfoot
Great Expectations of Alien Invasions
The King in Yellow and High School Romance
The Illiad and the Illithid
Alien vs. Predator

Anyway it's still on cheap TV. I don't know how anyone can puff out their chest saying they don't watch cartoons, and then sit down to dinner and a show about zombie detectives, coping with life as a teenage grim reaper, or Doctor Who. There was probably more meaningful drama (loud cough) in the 90s Batman cartoon than most of this kind of fare I run into.

Cats vs. Jack the Ripper.

Statistically, whether or not American voters had college degrees was by far the most significant predictor of where the 2020 tide of additional turnout was highest, and who won it. This metric is a stand-in for socioeconomic status — closely following patterns of higher income. Thus it could also be an indicator of cultural security, comfort and enfranchisement.

There was a stark schism in the white vote apparent along this fault line: Populist areas, highlighted by concentrations of white voters without a college degree, moved toward Mr. Trump. White areas with better-educated populations, whether cities, suburbs or college towns, moved decisively away.
Quote from a NYT article explaining how Trump was able to conjure up 10 million additional voters between 2016 and 2020. Largely ignored in the article that Biden was able to get an additional 12.5 million which put him ahead in the popular vote.

Still interesting that Trump won the dummy vote twice. I know one of you will complain about elitism because I called it the dummy vote but the fact that education is a bigger predictor of voting habit than say race, or income says a lot.

just remember that the mostly well-educated popular majority are not 'the real people' working, paying taxes and inhabiting 'the real world'.

The "working class" that the right is pretending to care about is mostly minorities in low wage service jobs too. Same people that they make fun of for flipping burgers.

"Obviously you're not a real human being unless you started your job as something like a blue-collar apprentice or mere grunt labor. Your man-card is not charged by virtue of your career achievements, but rather by how beaten and mistreated your body is." Doesn't sound elitist to me at all! "My HaNdS lOoK lIkE tHiS sO HerS cAn LoOk LiKe tHiS!"

Not so much anymore, but I've worked with heavy machinery and hazardous chemicals in the past. "My hands" don't tell the tale (because I wore things called gloves, travel with hand lotion, and took my PPE seriously). I've been judged on that, sometimes gallingly by clipboard warriors in an office setting. Excuse me for having ten functioning digits and not looking like an extra from Mad Max.

It doesn't feel like a universal thing, but it's a good way to pick out the assholes in an industry if that's what they focus on.

dilbert wants the west to be the bestest most advanced civilization in the world but then also ridicules the institutions and professions that have been responsible for some, not altogether too small, part in the west's advance. universities? the arts and culture? publishing? law? pah! he's a philistine and a supremacist all at once. typical nazi twerp.

Obviously when it comes to the fickle job of governing people, a background in manipulating splines on a computer screen takes precedence over one in history or sociology or law or, dare I say, political science. Never mind when it comes to a blundering official with STEM qualifications. Dig up those arts guys, and secure those ah-hah! troll moments.

I notice that blue collar workers talk shit towards white collar workers a lot more than the reverse. I worked as a car mechanic in college before I derped my way into being a certified public accountant. White collar workers don't even think about blue collar workers really. And it is considered not classy to talk down to people because of their education or career yet one political party made being resentful toward college students, academics and people who can work from home during a pandemic (???) part of their identity.

exactly this. the politics of resentment only flow one way. dilbert is probably genuinely the most resentful person on this forum and one of the most resentful people i've ever interacted with. white collar people or 'arts hipsters' don't spend the time or energy on all that useless fucking hating. who cares? i don't think the people dilbert obsesses over even think about his beloved engineering.

The Gulf War was before my time. I had just got my accounting license when 9/11 happened. I actually applied for a job in an office in the World Trade Center a little before the attacks. That's why I am so weird about Muslims all the time.
