The "Medicare for all" vs "strengthen Obamacare" is the dumbest rhetorical battle of '20 that convinced zero of the dumb rural voters it was meant to appeal to.

Any Democrat is going to sign off on increased healthcare spending. How much or how little is dependent on Congress more than the White House. For what it's worth the die hard Trump supporters are smart enough to realize this too.

what's the general prognosis? isn't covid a crisis that can force some meaningful change in healthcare?

I would say the exact opposite. The COVID crisis just entrenched the system we have now. The hospitals that got blasted the hardest were blue states hospitals. And even if red states hospitals got blasted like Bronx hospitals, it would radicalize people even more against universal healthcare. Instead of being upset about the government for shortages, people will instead be upset that people they think beneath them were using vital resources they felt entitled to.

Most people hate the government more than ever right now. Why give them more power?
"Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough."

Odd that they would direct their anger at the government instead of the walking disaster named Trump.

Jay, you might also want to look at Brazil if you want an example of a country where the president truly 'prioritises the economy.' Does it look great? Or maybe Russia. They're doing fantastic as well.

Democrats do not hate the government. They just hate who has control of it at the moment. "rolling back the imperial presidency" isn't a line you hear in left spaces like you hear it in right spaces whenever a democrat is in power.

It's going to be tough. Some people feel wounded by ACA. I know a couple who had a health insurance plan lined up, then the rug was pulled out from under them and the prices took off to a point they couldn't easily afford. And then the individual mandate fee. Sadly there is some bad blood that the next wave of pushing for universal health care is going to have to overcome. This couple wouldn't trust the government to hold the door open for them.

The inconsistent cost doesn't help either. Looking up plans for myself and seeing that the next county over pays a few hundred less. Like get the heck outta here with that.

Almost all of the people who complained about their cheap health insurance getting cancelled were on crappy/scam plans that covered nothing or was unreliable.

I don't think it makes a lot of sense mandating pregnancy stuff to an infertile woman.

They wanted a basic level of coverage that couldn't be gamed or exploited. Infertile women get mandated pregnancy coverage in a single payer system too. Do you think the U.K. will lower how much you have to pay into the NHS if you can't have a kid?

Do you get all your healthcare opinions from a guy who has never had a nice thing to say about the ACA and works for conservative healthcare groups or did you find that on Google?

Look I'm pretty neutral here apart from being salty that I'm charged more than neighbors who might live a few blocks away. But it shouldn't be hard to understand that making a plan someone had lined up more expensive and then fining them for not having it, can engender some bad blood. I think it will complicate implementing a more complete sort of system.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when it comes to paying more than the people down the street. Are you a smoker?

No, I just live in a different zip code or whatever.

I found it on google in like the last five minutes. It's hardly the only unenthusiastic article I've ever read. And I don't stick my reading to just the people from the left or the people from the right. Is that all you really have to point out?

A lot of my friends and family have been harder hit by some of these plans than by what they'd been running before.

Look:

Americans are dying because they can’t afford their insulin. That’s now a 2020 campaign issue.
https://archive.thinkprogress.org/i-vot … a4793a694/

Once a month, Sarah Stark makes the trip to her local pharmacy to pick up the insulin she needs to keep her diabetes in check.

She has health insurance through her job and uses a $100 manufacturer’s coupon to help defray the cost. Even so, she ends up paying a whopping $728.40.
Thank you American health care strategy, I guess. You are perfect in every way.

The people in NY and Washington D.C. who made the minimum level of coverage insurance policies need to have probably used their needs as a baseline. The fact Washington state has lower than apparently humanely acceptable insurance standards is a problem bigger than the ACA. I am very sorry people in Washington can't afford prenatal care coverage.

You sound like your venting more than anything since you know we both want a system that is something like universal healthcare coverage. That's fine. I already stated that I think that window has closed anyway.

Would it be fair to say the american electorate places an inordinate amount of value on 'authenticity' in their leadership?

I've noticed both on local and national level there's a strong preference for candidates who 'tell it like it is' or who don't hide the skeletons in their closet. If that's the case I can sort of see the appeal of Trump - he's an extremely rough individual who doesn't have any polish at all.
