In hindsight I do regret not having gone to see some of the sights in your country before it was reduced to ruins.
tintern abbey was bloody marvellous before a welsh neo-nazi and his fascist lackeys got to it.

De-nazify Russia?
dueling banjos intensifiesNovorossiya, Novorussia or New Russia (Russian: Новороссия, tr. Novorossiya, IPA: [nəvɐˈrosʲɪjə]; Ukrainian: Новоросія, romanized: Novorosiya), also referred to as the Union of People's Republics (Russian: Сою́з наро́дных респу́блик, tr. Soyuz narodnykh respublik, IPA: [sɐˈjus nɐˈrodnɨx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]; Ukrainian: Союз народних республік, Soyuz Narodnykh Respublik), was a proposed confederation of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) in eastern Ukraine, both of which are under the control of pro-Russian separatists.[7]

I've read a claim that a former leader† had an SS tattoo. Another claim:The Sparta Battalion (Russian: батальон «Спарта») is a rebel militant group of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) formerly led by the Russian-born Arsen Pavlov (callsign "Motorola") militant until his death in October 2016. The new leader of the company became Vladimir Zhoga (Russian: Владимир Жога, callsign "Vokha"), a DPR fighter from Sloviansk,[1] until his death on 5 March 2022 at Volnovakha, Ukraine.[2][3][4] The battalion took part in the Battle of Ilovaisk and Second Battle of Donetsk Airport and several others.[5][6]

lol if trueThe Sparta battalion's logo (and their name) is actually plagiarized from a faction in the Metro series of video games.
The National Bolshevik Party (NBP; Russian: Национал-большевистская партия), also known as the Nazbols[18] (Russian: нацболы), operated from 1993 to 2007 as a Russian political party with a political program of National Bolshevism. The NBP became a prominent member of The Other Russia coalition of opposition parties.[19] Russian courts banned the organization and it never officially registered as a political party. In 2010, its leader Eduard Limonov founded a new political party, called The Other Russia[20] There have been smaller NBP groups in other countries.

succeeded by:
The Other Russia of E. V. Limonov (Russian: Другая Россия Э. В. Лимонова, romanized: Drugáya Rossíya E. V. Limónova), formerly The Other Russia (Russian: Другая Россия, romanized: Drugáya Rossíya), is a non-registered Russian political party founded on July 10, 2010 by Eduard Limonov. The Other Russia was reorganized in September 2020, and The Other Russia changed the party's name to "The Other Russia of E. V. Limonov", to honor their deceased founder, who had died the same year.

Slavic Unification and Revival Battalion or Svarozhich Battalion – The battalion was formed by members of the Rodnovery (Slavic native faith) movement, at its peak 1,200 fighters, which is now part of the Vostok Brigade.
Rusich Company (Russian: ДШРГ «Русич») – Special forces-type company commanded by Aleksey Milchakov. Made up of far-right Russian and other European volunteers.[139] On July 10, 2015, Milchakov announced that the Rusich Company would be withdrawing from Donbas for retraining and refitting.
Jovan Šević Detachment (Serbian: одред «Јован Шевић») – Serbian Chetnik-led group commanded by Bratislav Živković, has 450 fighters.[108]
RNU Volunteer Units – Includes volunteers from Russian National Unity and other neo-Nazi organizations.[111][112]

If something bad happens to your naked chalk men because of the conflict over there, I will think about writing a letter to my congressman.uziq wrote:

"The Ukrainians are Nazis" reminds me of something American social justice warriors would say. I can't take that seriously.
What are Putin's preferred pronouns?

Post was largely in response to Dilbert's Azov post, and others elsewhere like it. Meanwhile, when Russia makes use of groups that are openly neo-Nazi and not even trying to distance themselves from it, their goal of "de-Nazifying Ukraine" comes off as a little disingenuous even if some of the people fighting for Ukraine are, or were, neo-Nazis.
Maybe a little different anyway than American social justice warriors calling people they don't agree with Nazis, because they don't agree with them.

I get the reasoning behind jokes like that against anti-gay politicians (a thing that would annoy them to see), but it still comes off as a little cringe in tone sometimes. "Haha look at that picture of Erdogan in women's makeup! Crossdressers and transgenders are soooo funny!"What are Putin's preferred pronouns?
Fuck Israel
Biden's latest sanctions are weak, sanctioning Russian politicians who likely don't leave Russia anyway.
What we need is for some non-NATO countries to step forward and agree to enforce a no-fly zone. I nominate Australia.
Apparently the war has fucked up China's entire European belt and road strategy with an awful lot of transport planned through Russia and Belarus into Europe. That'll make them think.

it’s fundamentally placed them in a position where they are reacting/adapting to events rather than dictating or guiding them in line with their own geopolitical strategies. something which doesn’t sit easy with xi’s vision of china as the eminent superpower.
can quite easily imagine russia becoming a diplomatic headache for china like kim’s DPRK have been from time to time. still, russia have the resources and the economic benefits will outweigh all else.

Should Crimea still be a part of Russia?Dilbert_X wrote:

Worse than that, the world has twigged that being nice and welcoming them into the global community doesn't change them for the better, it just disadvantages us.uziq wrote:

Now the west should disentangle from the both of them. Xi must have realised this by now.

that affects us just as badly as it snubs them, though. we are just creating a multipolar world that will be inherently more unstable, less cooperative and more fractious. this is just bad news all-round, considering the unprecedented challenges we face as a species to cooperate on issues of vital importance, e.g. climate change, world peace, denuclearisation, etc.
india will continue buying weapons and materiel from russia. china will continue buying her fuel. many european nations will continue doing backdoor deals with her fuel and exporting their own industry (i notice you're nowhere near as apoplectic about the decision, this week, of renault to continue manufacturing in russia, as you were about israel ... one of the world's biggest car conglomerates; but i digress).
india+china+russia is the majority of the world's population and 3x nuclear-armed states. that's not a trivial bloc to be entering into competition with, neither economically nor militarily.

yeah, as i said, ukraine has woodland and tree-lines around highways and roads, as you can find in almost ... all of europe. most of ukraine is characterized by flat, arable terrain or marshy swamplands, not by thick forest cover. are you really going to open this one again? germany has literally 1/3rd more woodland than ukraine: are you claiming any war fought there would pivot around the black forest?
what's far more relevant in this discussion isn't the terrain in play, it's the opposing military doctrines. russia's approach to using armoured divisions is still thoroughly cold war. they aren't prepared to meet with a foe that has fast and deployable anti-tank munitions. they simply have not adapted their military structure and tactics to modern warfare in the same way that, say, the US has re-structured her military following the debacles in the middle-east and decades of insurgency. russia is still plugging large convoys of armour into cities teeming with anti-tank weapons and ambush traps. sad! woodlands have little to do with it. the ukrainians can deploy their remote-controlled anti-tank weapons without fear of being spotted from dug-in positions anywhere.
it's only a matter of time before russia encircles the major cities in ukraine's east and central regions. they're doing it in their own way, slowly, wastefully, and disastrously enough, but it's inevitable given the brute numbers in this match-off. i've seen plenty of videos of ukrainians using their own anti-tank technology from roadside copses to enact ambushes on convoys, yes. you can probably also factor in western intelligence feeding them the best info on supply lines and weakpoints. but is it going to swing the conflict? i highly, highly doubt it.

Russia doesn't have enough men in Ukraine to take over the entire country. They might be able to encircle some eastern cities but actually sieging down and then occupying the cities is too much.
My post from before the conflict started was the same "200,000 is not enough to take over all of Ukraine". Putin should have gotten my memo.

yeah i don't think anyone is thinking they will seriously occupy and take ukraine. the west is a different matter entirely. far fewer russian-speakers or with people who might sympathise with any separatist ambitions; far harder terrain; far closer to NATO borders on about 3 sides. not a simple place to fly air sorties over without potential international incidents.
occupying the cities in the same way the US set up green zones in baghdad, etc, is probably not their aim. far more likely they'll use chemical or biological weapons and terrorize the population into submission. putin's 'mission accomplished!' is as much about ethnic cleansing as it is about peaceable regime change.

Zeek, you went off on a fuming tangent about how I thought Ukraine was a wooded wasteland. My point was that tree cover as a factor does exist in parts of the country, not that it is universal or "the 'nam" or whatever. This was something discussed on videos by military officers before I made the post, comparing locations and their challenges to more sparsely vegetated war zones.
I wasn't even thinking of the last time trees came up when I linked this tweet, and I'd rather not retread that strange jaunt. I think that the Ukrainian resistance is very interesting, though obviously I'd rather this invasion not have occurred at all.

the ukrainian resistance has been well-armed and well-trained to counter the russian military, yep. their armoured divisions are looking very useless, whether it's in urban, open, or wooded terrain. ukraine literally has their own nationally produced anti-tank system that lets the operators sit in a dug-in position with a screen/remote control and the actual launcher 100 m away. you don't need trees to hit a vehicle with that thing. you can be on the other side of a small hill.
unfortunately the russian military is overwhelmingly still artillery-based. watching videos of cold war-era tanks getting RIP'd in urban centres is satisfying enough, but it won't change the final outcome of the conflict. russia has thousands of vehicles dedicated to rocket barrages, artillery ... city-flattening stuff. ukraine doesn't have the air control or requisite counter to that.

Hopefully the Russian artillery people decide they can make better bank by delivering their SPGs safely into Ukrainian hands, rather than (restrained) deliverance of ordnance into apartment buildings.A Russian tank crewman surrendered himself and his vehicle to authorities in Ukraine after the rest of his squad fled home to Russia and he realized there was "no point in continuing to fight," Ukrainian officials said.
The soldier, identified only as Misha, received a targeted text that guaranteed safety, a financial reward and potential Ukrainian citizenship at the end of the war in exchange for surrendering armored equipment, Ukrainian state-funded media outlet National News Agency of Ukraine reported.
i guess being an artillery lackey, like a pilot, means you have much less 'contact' with the enemy. it's got to be easier to fire off barrages into the sky than to get up close to the whites of your enemies' eyes.
Incidentally, artillery drivers in World of Tanks are the most hated group of players in the game for more or less that reason.
A lot of right wingers who warn of NuClEaR wAr are doing so in bad faith. They want to carry the water of the almost fascist regime in Moscow but know reiterating Putin's talking point won't go over well. So they bring up nuclear weapons to derail brain storming against Russia.
We need to worry less about Russia's reactions to us and think more about how we can make the Russians worry about our reactions.

Mariupol was a mostly Russian city. This whole thing is comical in a way. Russia proves it is still a great power by killing lots of other Russians.
