An evolution for conservative contacts who are sympathetic with Ukraine: all this is largely the fault of the US for not working with Russia for all these years. It was 7 am. I just shrugged, mumbled something about long term Putinism, recidivist ideals, and moved on to a work topic before they could kiss Reagan's butt too much for...opposing Russia?

I'm not putting enough bandwidth into it apparently. Business agenda takes priority over political waffling.

Obama and Clinton ruined our relationship with Russia. It we had just had a Republican president for those years, everything would be different. Also Putin did nothing wrong anyway. The Ukrainian Jeeeeeeew president is a corrupt former comedian.

Well, at the very least my Republicans aren't full on trucker convoy Republican. I haven't heard that last bit sneered out. It's a strange bunch of divisions right now, I think. Die-hard Republican against die-hard Republican.

National Review headline: "Russian Music and Musicians Should Not Be Canceled"

https://c.tenor.com/Hdt6LGSACs4AAAAM/jennifer-lawrence-thumbs-up.gif

I try not to tease Newbie too much about his sympathizing with the enemy because he is a dog man. He likes everyone and just wants some belly rubs. National Review and the right wingers who suddenly find indiscriminate collective punishment wrong are such hypocrites though. Where were they when we were cancelling the Muslims?

I don't think some of their thought processes even qualify as hypocritical thinking. It's not even that it hasn't occurred to them, it's that information is being taken in without the benefit of an active thought filter.

It's funny you bring up National Review or whatever "cancelling the Muslims," in the same post you call the Russian people The Enemy. How is that any better? Are the protesters your enemy? The sick (on both sides, mind) who have limited, waning, or no access to treatment as a consequence of Putin's war? How is Dmitry living in a run-down apartment on a diet of butterbrot and doctor's sausage any more to blame for all this than Jamal the wheat farmer was for 9/11?

The people being ruthlessly lied to by their own government, their (and the overall) suffering from this fiasco, should at least stir a few embers of humanity in your dog-poisoning, soldier-cucking, post-deleting, underling-fondling heart.

All I am asking for is consistency. I am not celebrating the fact that sanctions may turn the Russian economy into a crater. I know I will not materially benefit from such a thing.

A diet of butterbrot and doctor's sausage sounds like good cooking.

Apparently she got a $200 fine, so far.

Whats more interesting than me being wrong is that there's something bigger here.
In the normal course she'd have been disappeared, or been paraded then disappeared and her family would have been unpersoned.

That she's got a slap on the wrist, so far, is very odd, either Putin is backing down - unlikely, or the courts aren't playing ball, or something else.

I've been more or less consistent throughout this whole thing. You're all like "newbie's sympathizing with the enemy" like we're back in the 50s, literally in the same breath you call people out for canceling Muslims over the war on terror or whatever. Doesn't it seem a little awkward to you to complain about hypocrisy, when you are literally doing the same thing in your argument?

Interesting note, at one point in recent years, Russia had Ukraine edged out in CPI score (was slightly less corrupt), but now has some years streak of scoring lower.

That aside, why is Putin giving tanks to a "mafia state?"

I think you misunderstand where I am coming from. I think the Muslims and the Russians should both be cancelled.

winter war with finland. also a failure.

soviet war in afghanistan. similar debacle.

recalcitrant tito's yugoslavia against big bullying sibling USSR.

ethnic nationalism à la serbs, croats, with nasty neo-nazi (not so) undertones.

etc.

So if Putin is a war criminal doesn't that make Bush and Blair war criminals too?
Didn't we invade Iraq to remove Saddam and de-Baathify Iraq?

Oh and Ukraine does have Nazis, but curiously Israel is happy to sell them weapons.

I feel like we've already been here. Countries like the US have our own far-right and neo-nazi groups, whose presence probably does not justify laying siege to their countries (if such a thing were even possible, in the US's case for ex.; we don't live in a Red Dawn universe).

Has Russia's invasion gotten rid of Azov, whatever threat they actually pose? Could it actually thrust them into greater prominence?

Apparently they just assassinated a Russian general

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says another Russian general has been killed during fighting.

He didn't name the officer, but an adviser to Ukraine's interior ministry said Maj Gen Oleg Mityaev had been killed by the far-right Azov Battalion.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, a person within President Zelensky's inner circle said Ukraine had a military intelligence team dedicated to targeting Russia's officer class.

"They look for high profile generals, pilots, artillery commanders," the person told the newspaper.

From the perspective of your three WW2 books, is that particularly egregious? Targeting brass and communications, obvious command vehicles, seems to be pretty normal warfare to me. Losing them like that and so quickly, on Russia. Could be considered a bit of an embarrassment for their military.

Did I say it was egregious? Its a normal part of war.

Seems like a pretty small far right element TBH.

one of the high-ranking azov battalion commanders got killed in the same day, afaik.

it's kind of weird how quickly the western liberal media has turned from witch-hunts over minor 'right-wing' peccadilloes to openly championing the victories of the azov batallion. in a different context with a different shade of skin they would have a name like the 'al-nusra front'.

i wonder what all these highly armed, tactically trained neo-nazis are going to do in a post-war ukraine, even a 'victorious' one. i'm sure they won't be making any demands or asking for any inclusion in the society they spilled so much blood for.

every time a high-ranking russian military official gets thwacked by actual swastika-bearing neo-nazis, it's a huge win for their propaganda machine. what more proof can you need of the pressing need to 'denazify' a country when neo-nazis are posting their version of warsong nasheed videos online with your general's corpses? the russian public will rise-up and topple putin any day now!

Seems like a pretty small far right element TBH.
it's ~1,000-2,000 members i think, a pretty swelled 'battalion' by ordinary army metrics.

the battalion has pretty much single-handedly defended an entire city/province up to now. they were officially incorporated into the ukrainian defense forces at the start of the civil strife. it certainly didn't help the 'optics' of the conflict that the nastiest, most capable fighters for ukraine on the donbass were actual neo-nazis.

Many Americans upset about Aleppo etc. were indirectly supporting Nusra. Many others were willing to downplay the links between Nusra and AQ. Others took the position "as long as they stay in their own country I don't care". I did all three. Same with Azov. I am never visiting Ukraine.

Also fun fact Nusra means support. So the translation of the name is 'The Support Front.

Seems like yesterday we were cheering Bin Laden as he was driving the soviets out of Afghanistan.

There's a fine line between nationalism and patriotism, both groups are going to join the army.

Have any of you ever been to Ukraine before? Russia? You can't judge anything going on there unless you spent time walking around the tourist areas of Kiev while wearing women's running shoes and anime glasses.
