Crystal clear that was deliberate.
Seems pretty clear Putin is going to ratchet up the atrocity level - why?
- to force the West to act.
- to rub it in the world's face as they sit on their hands to show them who's boss.
- its just SOP and they're doing it out of habit.

Hard to know at this point but I felt angry and I'm sure a lot of other people did.
Something is going to happen, I'd say supply the MiGs, maybe tanks, and face Putin down.

Lots of articles pointing out Putin has miscalculated and has no exit which isn't a disaster for himself and Russia. He has to be removed.

But remember, the real victims are the Russians under sanction.
Is that really necessary?

Nobody here is saying that the Russians are the Real Victims™ in this. But they are victims, of persecution, propaganda (invasions under false pretenses, should be familiar), and punitive rewards reaped from actions sown by the government. The fallout from the sanctions (a weapon I'm not saying we shouldn't use) isn't contained to Russia. We shouldn't pretend otherwise, and we shouldn't bury lucidity under the weight of short-term appeal to moral outrage.

It's funny to me seeing Republicans just now tripping over themselves to see who can act the most infuriated over the invasion. I thought Ukraine was supposed to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Oops.

If we could just focus the anger for high petrol prices on Putin this war will be over in no time.

Liberals are dragging their feet on nuking Putin -> IT COSTS ME $150 TO FILL MY F250 NUKE THEM ALL NOW

But as we know Republican anger can go off in any direction, its sort of exciting to watch but the outcome is always miserable

I think the average North Koreans, Iranians etc have had miserable times under sanctions and its not actually achieved a lot.
But what else is there to do? At least we have the oligarchs and Russian wealth fund to hit.

doesn't russian supplies factually account for something like 2-3% of the american fuel industry?

people are pissed because prices have been rising throughout not just this crisis but the pandemic crisis too. it's been an excuse to print money.

all the major petrol corps are posting record bumper profits. something doesn't quite add up there.

it's pretty natural for the working stiff to get annoyed when all the increased costs factor down mostly onto their pockets. most businesses and industry just raise their prices in lines with their increased costs and hope that market inelasticity will carry them through. it's the working-class who dutifully pay all their taxes and eat shit at amazon warehouses who absorb these increased costs.

it's depressingly unsurprising that vast amounts of the (krelim-coopted, trumper) right-wing are too depressed with the whole 'interventionist foreign war' thing to care about ukraine. they've already sent off their darling Dwaynes and Chads to get murdered in the middle-east. there's no appetite for it.

this isn't the first time that a world in conflict has found america's national mood on an isolationist downswing.

Ironically, Biden is an oil and gas president. Meanwhile, Trump is still complaining about him, er, "letting environmentalists radical climate extremists run roughshod over the country."

fox wrote:

Biden has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for the high gas prices, which have risen sharply under his administration even before Russia’s invasion. Many have publicly called for him to open up oil and gas drilling in the U.S. to lessen the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

yahoo wrote:

Last week, for example, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said, “Joe Biden has given up the best defense we had against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s evil vision for the world — energy independence.”

But a data dashboard unveiled Wednesday by the Center for Western Priorities shows that the opposite is true. The federal government has been issuing oil and gas drilling permits more willingly than it did during President Donald Trump’s first three years in office, and it could be issuing even more if the oil and gas industry weren’t leaving many current leases undeveloped.
Also lmao, Putin's evil now. Are we just going to forget Republicans chanting his name.

putin was a meme even for democrats/liberals during the obama years. he was thought of as a somewhat cute and idiosyncratic 'strongman', faintly ridiculous and defanged. recall all those internet memes (on an internet that was largely pre-pepe, pre-4chan's-neo-nazi-conversion) of him riding topless on a horse, and so on.

it was a cute irrelevance that he had been flattening cities in his backyard in recent memory.

blair/bush majorly rehabilitated putin. which is not necessarily to say it was the worst idea, at the time; cf. bringing in china from the cold.

I'm sure all this coming to a head has come as an unpleasant surprise to a lot of people who preferred Putin back during the shirtless memes, atop a bear with a Kalashnikov.

Yes but people have to pay market price for oil, thats how a global economy works.

Its pure profit for oil producers, a fat tax on them is overdue.

Lots of baying for blood right now after the American journalist got killed. Great reason to start WW3 …

Also, early on medical companies warned that thoughtless sanctions may hinder medical supplies to Russia. Not unlike suffering Russia is causing to Ukraine I suppose, but I don't think an army of disgruntled paraplegics are going to stand much of a chance "rising up" against their government with no leg function.

Also refusing shelter to people fleeing Russia. "Get off your vacation, go back and depose Putin!" Er, shouldn't the brain drain also be counted as a win of sorts? Probably more effective than sending a bunch of web developers or whatever back to Russia with the expectation that they'll stage an effective Ramboing against police forces.

People are stupid, sanctions are a blunt instrument. What to do?

Next move is China's - are they going to ally themselves with Russia or be part of the developed world?
Fact is they want the world for their own, whatever they say will be a lie, as if putting 1m Uighurs in concentration camps wasn't enough - hopefully the world has now woken up.
Its going to be a problem when China nationalises all the factories stupid westerners moved there.

Well there's not too much I can do in terms of a personal boycott. Even if I buy German, Japanese, or Swiss there's a roll of the dice that some or all of a product has been outsourced to China. My place is full of Chinese-made stuff, likely my phone and a decent chunk of my PC's components as well. My next computer will likely be very Chinese in origin. Pandora's box has been opened and is in the next room smoking cigarettes and binging soaps with its feet up on the coffee table.

Some of the worst garbage I've ever dealt with has been made with pride in the USA.

One of the foremost conservatives in that circle is actually on Ukraine's side of things now, and completely aghast at the stories coming out of the country. But do not mistake this as an opportunity to change minds. It is not. They are immune, and cannot be effectively cross-examined for their past opinions/comments or those of their pundits/politicians.

The years of indoctrination with fear and hate have done their number on people. Arguing against their politics might as well be holding a knife to their throat. They have to be the ones to pull themselves out of that rut.

I kind of doubt it. He regards the invasion with more bile than Biden's presidency. They don't necessarily have to connect the dots before forming an opinion. It's never been about connecting the dots. Also mildly critical of the trucker convoy thing. Wouldn't want his city jammed up by a bunch of honking semis.

The pig people thing also probably isn't very helpful. We shouldn't lose site that humans are also animals. You have to wonder sometimes how similar this stuff is to a horse reacting to a plastic bag wafting in the breeze halfway down the parking lot.

This is what I'd like to see from Jen Psaki

White House Press Briefing: Jen Psaki

Today the Biden White House is announcing the "No More Jumping Off Tall Buildings" initiative, handily NoMorOns for short.

The govt is going to make it illegal to jump off a tall building, or to approach a tall building with the intention of jumping off.
People doing this make liberals sad and requires the directing of your tax dollars to private contractors to clean up instead of going to abortions for feckless single mothers and gender reassignment for confused teens with weak parents so please don't do it.
If you insist on doing this then the govt will just have to get in your face and trample more of your freedoms, perhaps this is a good place to draw your line in the sand.

Also Nancy Pelosi is introducing a bill to stop people playing Russian Roulette with actual guns and live ammunition.
The fines will be:
$10,000 per offence with one in the cylinder, rising to $100,000 if the crime is committed with all chambers loaded, all fines doubled if you could please arrange to do it on a youtube livestream.

Please understand that if you do this then you are "sticking one to the libs" and Hilary Clinton will actually cry.

Russia is seizing Western-built airliners while sanctions block parts, maintenance, and support
https://www.yahoo.com/news/russia-seizi … 55211.html

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law authorizing the seizure of hundreds of Western-built aircraft operated by Russian airlines.
  • The planes are owned by aircraft lessors, which have canceled contracts following sanctions against Russia.
  • The seize could pose a risk to passengers because the planes may not receive proper maintenance repairs due to sanctions.

Coming on top of:

Russian prosecutors warn Western firms of arrests, asset seizures
https://news.yahoo.com/russian-prosecut … 32451.html

Russian prosecutors warned Western companies that criticism of Moscow's war on Ukraine could lead to arrests of corporate leaders or seizure of assets in the country.

Companies that received the warning included Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, IBM and Yum Brands, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

The threats came in the form of calls, letters and visits threatening to take legal action against the companies and seize assets including their trademarks, the newspaper reported.

Sources told the Journal that the threats prompted at least one of the companies to limit communications between its Russian business and the rest of the organization.
