NZ has been independent from Britain since 1947 yet we still have the Union Jack on our flag, (which was designed in 1902.) It's out of date. It's like if the US flag had less than 50 stars. Canada still has a similar relationship to the UK as we do and they dumped their Union Jack sporting flag in 1965. We're more than 45 years behind Canada!

Yeah, I should look at the Canadian debate before 1965. I know it was pretty heated. With the debate here there's a large amount of people who are really hesitant about changing which is why a number of designs, including mine, are very similar to the current flag - more looking for something that can replace the Union Jack than an entirely new flag.War Man wrote:

The general consensus is that the Southern Cross, (stars,) should remain in some form and many people favour the Silver Fern featuring somewhere. Problem with the fern is that it can be confused with a white feather, (which symbolises foolishness or cowardice,) or a fish skeleton, (which doesn't symbolise anything,) which is why I opted for a more stylised shape.
Ultimately though no-one gives a fuck about New Zealand so I say if we want a fish skeleton on our flag we should have a fish skeleton on our flag.

I'd suggest a black flag with a white silhouette of a kiwi.
The fern is way to generic (especially when stylized on a flag) and will easily be mistaken for a leaf or a fish skeleton.
Parallel to that, the Aussies should use a yellow flag with a green kangaroo.
