Straight out of the conservative radio playbook.

Maybe white people tired of hearing about it can move back to the land of their forebears. "Oh, no. What a silly idea."

I reread some of the synopsis of a book I read during undergrad titled "The Soldier and the State". It was written in 1957 by the guy who later made Clash of Civilizations. But this book is very academic and dry and not sensationalist.

He argues that the best way to bring forward effective civilian control of the military is the professionalize the officer corp. What he means by that is to turn the officer corp into a self regulating profession with certain standards, a well defined role, an area of deference. I think the concept can be looked into when it comes to U.S. policing. There are no national standards for police. There isn't an universal curriculum or minimum competency requirement. Anyone can become an officer if the local police captain makes them so. Maybe we can have a national law enforcement certification or universal minimum standards to qualify for aid and legal protection? Have a self regulating national organization able to review and dismiss officers and officer actions that is counter to the mission and prestige of the organization?

Thoughts?

Whenever police go to arrest a black guy there'll be a riot.

Obviously the police have been assholes, the pendulum will now swing in completely the other direction, blacks will be free to be assholes.

which is why police departments need to show signs that they are making serious reforms and turning over this issue.

yes, there will be riots if police continue with the same attitudes, the same tactics, the same personnel. that's rather the whole point -- isn't that what you've been complaining about too ffs? bad habits and 'us vs them' thinking has become ingrained, institutionalized; so change the institution!

acting like we are spiralling into an inevitable helter skelter race war, and subtly shifting the blame onto those uppity, fractious blacks, is right-wing bollocks of the highest order. your thinking is risible.

lmao it's like the website design purposefully mimics the effect i have described here previously: about how right-wing thought is like rolling over an old rotten log in the woods and seeing the creepy crawlies and worms writhing beneath. a few rattlesnakes, too!

That makes zero sense.

Protests and riots don't happen every time a black man is arrested. They happen in response to events like Rodney King and George Floyd. We don't need police forces who can beat people to death, or half to death, then get away with a slap on the wrist and a pat on the back. This current chaos is feeding into itself and the police are among those with the most blame. What else are some people going to do? Write a letter to the president. Ha!

this is dilbert's and his kind's rhetorical trick: make out that riots over extra-judicial murder and police brutality are the inevitable 'slippery slope' to preferential race treatment. as if wanting to be treated equally before the law, as every citizen and subject of a nation should be, is some sinister demand for special privileges. as if black people will feel entitled to commit crime without punishment, now. it's fucking stupid. black people mostly don't want to get beat up for having a tail-light out, or murdered when routine street stops escalate.

waving around the vague threat and fear that this will lead to 'police abandoning policing' and 'lawlessness with roving gangs being left to do what they want' is right-wing hokum.

is it really not considered a big deal in the states that the president now routinely cites conspiracy theories?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 … lice-tweet

this stuff is so far off-piste and so detached from reality that it's worrying.

it reminds me, yet again, of that interview with an ex-intelligence official who said that briefing trump is unlike any other president because he 'doesn't discriminate on his information', i.e. he is dumb as a brick and would believe something a fucking fortune teller told him.

and this is the guy that wants to 'dominate' the streets of US cities. based on his weird worldview where 75-year-old christian charity workers are 'antifas trying to scan police operations'. wtf.

Police abandoning policing in protest of their fellows being unable to get away with any number of examples in recent days of obscene violence should be indicative of the need for a law enforcement overhaul down to recruitment and training.

I'm totally fine with cops removing a DUI off the freeway. I'm not OK with them collectively beating him into a mass of contusions and broken bones. I was immersed in conservative commentary during the 90s. Some of the stuff said about Rodney King then would raise the hair on the back of your neck.

It's still somewhat stunning to me that after however many pages we've been posting wounded or concussed bystanders that Dilbert decided the time was right to warn us of some upcoming fantastical anarchy where black people are immune to law enforcement.

Is anyone still surprised at the depths of Trump's incompetence? After almost 4 years it's safe to say the USA is a banana republic.

At least Ken was able to go camping without being subject to a witch hunt.

Family Harassed & Accused of Being Antifa by Residents in Forks, Wash.
https://heavy.com/news/2020/06/forks-wa … -harassed/

A family of four was camping in Forks, Wash., when locals accused them of being Antifa and harassed them, following them to the campsite and cutting down trees to block the road, police said. The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release to Peninsula Daily late on Thursday, saying that four high school students helped the family leave by clearing out the trees with chainsaws.

The family was described by the outlet as a multi-racial family of four hailing from Spokane — a husband and wife, their 16-year-old daughter and the man’s mother. The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation and is looking for information regarding those involved. Many people spoke about the events on Twitter, with some people sharing screenshots of locals bragging about what happened.

Neither the names of the family nor those of the locals involved have been provided by the authorities.

You are indeed about 50x more likely to die from the flu than from an encounter with a police officer. We should riot against the flu next. Can we riot against coronavirus and then defund it?

I'm being sarcastic... mostly.
