Calling for the banning of Islam and Muslims actually is a popular idea among the right wing in America. Ben Carson went up in the polls when he said he wouldn't vote for a Muslim president. I don't think you would throw away your career if you made such a statement.

You can start to piece together people's views on other things by how vehemently they defend Christopher Columbus. It is very easy to just acknowledge he wasn't a good man. The native Americans won't get their land back or anything else if you do.
In any case, I think we should compromise and rename today "explorers day". We can celebrate people like Lewis and Clark, the arctic explorers, astronauts, NASA, ocean divers, etc.

If someone said they wanted Columbus day to remain unchanged because it celebrates their Italian heritage, I would be more than fine with that. If they want the day to celebrate their European heritage, fine with that too. Celebrate white heritage, accepted also with reservations.Jay wrote:

But if you feel the need to defend the day because Columbus/Explorers/Europeans/White people brought 'literacy, science, technology, medicine, civilization' etc. to 'savages' who were underdeveloped and weren't using the land anyway or deserved to lose it, I am going to file you down as either pig ignorant or a little racist.
