the only black guy-white girl relationship out of my friend group is kinda funny. the shortest, stockiest black guy is dating the tallest white girl i know. shes a good 8-10 inches taller than him yet they're been going strong for about a year now

i think in the english upper/upper-middle classes dating a person of colour is still seen as it was in about 1910, when it was mostly an extravagance and an exoticism. maybe something to rebel against your impossibly backwards and tres tres fustian parents for a while. but then it's understood you'll very much fall back in line and marry that nice young man whose father owns quite the handsome interest....

no, the class system isn't racist. racism implies a feeling of superiority or ideological hatred/discrimination. the upper classes of pretty much EVERY country are homogeneous. it's part of the game that keeps the power/economic wealth/influence in the upper class; upper classes don't stay upper for long if they mix with the demotic masses. it just so happens that, historically, the english upper-class are white. the polish upper class are white. the gambian upper class, however, happen to be black. and because of the tradition and cynical social manoeuvrings that go on to constitute an 'upper class', in all of its petrified, inert, static glory, they normally don't even marry people of lower-class to them, let alone people from different countries. it's not unheard of... but generally the pattern tends toward homogeneity. homogeneity =/= racism. it's more like a taste/predilection, albeit a taste that is reinforced by socio-cultural context (though most sociologists and philosophers would maintain that taste is always constituted this way, to some degree or another).Dilbert_X wrote:

the english upper-class are not racist. people of diverse backgrounds were at my school. people of diverse backgrounds occupy all sorts of positions of power and influence in english society. just because a 700-year old white upper-class family don't marry black people, doesn't make them racist. that's a complete fallacy. you are over-stretching.
