The Department of Education is deepening its commitment to the polarizing “restorative justice” disciplinary model.

The DOE will spend $1.3 million to establish “restorative justice action teams” made up of students and adults at more than 100 city schools being paid to entrench the program, according to a budgeting document.

The DOE is expected to invest further in restorative justice programs moving forward.

Instead of suspensions and other disciplinary measures, the approach has students attempt to peacefully settle disputes under teacher supervision.

Backers argue that harsher punishments are often inappropriate and can alienate students.

Critics charge that restorative justice emboldens poor behavior through a lack of direct consequences for misconduct.

The new DOE memo allocates up to $13,000 each to 107 selected schools that have introduced restorative justice programs.

NY Post is a tabloid. The rest of the short article is quotes from supporters and detractors.

I don't care for restorative justice either. I don't think schools should be tightly regimented prisons but we need to protect the kids who go to school and want to learn.
This post is ironic considering just ten minutes later I have to deal with a girl slapping a boy in my class.

'Emboldening misconduct,' lol. Suspending students because they get jumped in the hallway is quite alienating. Talk about shifting the blame from lazy/insufficient staffing, poor architecture, and a host of societal woes onto a 13yo who was just minding their own business, a kid will never forget that.

I don't know. I have never actually seen "zero tolerance" put into practice. Sounds like an urban legend. I have seen some shaky shit at charter schools though.

Frankly it sounds like the NYC DoE authorized $1.3 million in overtime for the mulattos looking to add to their portfolios. 'What are some extracurriculars or activities you are part of?" "I run the schools restorative justice system. ($2500 Stipend)"

Not a myth at all. Happened all the time when I was at school, over multiple schools. The person being assaulted could be KO'd on the spot or merely defend themselves like a passive monk, and still be in as much trouble as the turd who started it. Usually the parents of the victim would be annoyed at the whole affair and treat their kid to something anyway, so that was a bit of a disconnect for a school's misguided disciplinary efforts. Was a talk show talking point from time to time iirc.

Maybe varies in practice? From veep to veep? From district to district? Did schools wise up since the 90s?

Everything varies from district to district. Every district is its own locally funded thing. They answer to their state education departments but the U.S. Department of Education in D.C. has very little power over individual districts. This is probably for the best. Nationalizing public education? Don't we have enough angry parents doing silly shit at school boards?

But now it is a national culture war thing.

I'm stuck in the middle of a culture war and all I am trying to do is stop special ed kids from slapping each other at school.

If any other students were within a 2m radius of the slap, suspend them as well.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley criticized Eileen Gu, an American-born skier competing for China at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday, accusing her of “standing for human rights abuses.”

“In terms of the citizenship, look, China or the U.S.? You have got to pick a side. Period,” asserted Haley in an interview with Real Clear Politics. “You’ve got to pick a side because you’re either American or you’re Chinese, and they are two very different countries. … Every athlete needs to know when they put their flag on, you’re standing for freedom or you’re standing for human rights abuses. There is no in-between.”
Really can't stand this Uncle Tom bitch. With her fake name. Ted Cruz is another fake name person. Why do conservatives change their names? Why are they like this? It isn't 1922.

it's always the first-generation or second-generation imports who become the most earnest stakhanovites and forelock-tuggers.

we have the same thing in priti patel now. it's a nasty phenomenon. ingratiating themselves with the old guard by putting on exaggeratedly conservative airs.

incidentally i was watching a documentary about the US far-right last night and one of the young figureheads has the surname 'fuentes'. what is it with all these 'white nationalist defenders of western civilization' having hispanic surnames?

He definitely looks Hispanic. Hair color, shape of his head, face etc. It's hard to explain.

That's funny you mention him. Today I was at the principals office to get some supplies I needed. The usual secretary wasn't there. A blonde white girl was sitting at her desk. Two brown teen girls walk in and start trying to talk to her about something one of them needs. The blonde white girl asked the teen "Do you speak Spanish?" The teen said yes and the blonde white girl started speaking to her in fluent Spanish. The other girl turns around and looks at me with eyes. The teen then asked me if I spoke Spanish and I had to sheepishly say "no hablo Espanol".

Second time this happened this week. Was in a the teacher cafe and a black guy started speaking Spanish to the person next to me while I was there like.

louis theroux has just started airing a new series about extreme fringes of culture in post-2020. starting with the far-right.

first episode focussed heavily on this fuentes guy and bakedalaska, the sort of 'online', trollish, post-gamergate, live-streaming crowd.

they really did not come across well. makes you almost nostalgic for skinheads.

There's money in this stuff. The promoters of the Unite the Right rally that got a bunch of people killed are complaining about being broke from all of the lawsuits and bans on public speaking though.

to be fair, her answer is correct. china doesn't allow dual citizenships but theyve somehow made special accomodations for olympic athletes... but no one is talking enough about the white american hockey player for team china lmao.

Again, this struck Smith oddly. He was a native of Dearborn, Michigan, not mainland China. To his knowledge, he did not have any Chinese ancestry. So he wanted to make something clear to his potential new team when responding to the contract offer.

"I told them I can't renounce my U.S. citizenship," said Smith. "They were like, 'Do not worry. We will not ask you. This is not what this whole process is about. It's about getting you qualified for the Olympics.'"

there is something weird going about ms gu's citizenship details... she claimed to have renounced US citizenship but it has been changed

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/ei … 06142.html

According to her official profile, the athlete, who was born and raised in California by an American father and Chinese mother, renounced her United States citizenship for Chinese citizenship so she could represent China at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.

imagine revoking your citizenship to become a citizen of hell-china just so you can fart about in some inconsequential games once every 4 years.

horrendously poor judgment.

a gold medal in twirling on ice or ski'ing at funny angles down a slope doesn't really seem like a good reward for that shit.

She is making bank on sponsorships in China. She is a small celebrity and has the political system's support. China is up and coming meanwhile America is in decline. She is also half Chinese so she was never ever going to get the mainstream clout here. She made a good choice and I support her decision 100%. The most American thing you could do is sellout to America's enemies.

I wonder how many times she was called a chink living in America. The people complaining about her playing for China would still be suspicious of her if she had an American flag tattoo on her while winning gold for team USA.

it's easy to be a pejorist when it comes to the fate of america, the rise of china, etc., but i still think being born a citizen of a USA or a european country is the aimed-for world lottery ticket for the majority of the planet's population. she's a sponsored darling in china right now, sure, but we've all seen many times how quickly they cut their film stars, public figures, tech CEO's, etc, down to size as soon as they lose favour or stop dancing along to their tin drum.

wasn't everyone all of 2 months ago asking where china's top, most admired, etc, tennis star was disappeared to?

The tennis lady's story is more complicated than some high ranking Chinese official jumping out from the bushes to grab her. She was having an affair with him and did went public yadda yadda. You don't disappear the girl for being a crazy ex but she wasn't as innocent as people who read the headlines believe.

dude, that is gross. coaches and staff should not fuck their (child!) students. any top-level young athlete has undoubtedly been bullied/groomed/mind washed at some point in their intensive, lifelong training.

coaches choosing national teams are kingmakers who make or break entire careers. getting onto an ice skating team or being the junior tennis champion is a hotly contested matter. think for half a nanosecond about the batshit exploitative power dynamics of that ‘relationship’.

consider also how narrow and limited the worlds of these top-level athletes are. they’ve spent their entire lives at training camps or being shuttled from one institution to a stadium to a press centre or other. very few outside perspectives or balance. certainly no third parties to interject to say what’s right and wrong. massive potential to be misled or cooped up in an utterly toxic environment. they are wholly institutionalised in a form of ‘institution’ that is claustrophobically small, ultra-competitive, and physically gruelling.

by all accounts it sounds like there’s a rampant culture of sexual abuse and favouritism in these institutions. same thing happens in elite US programs, college football, etc. these environments are ideal for abusers because people’s entire defined existences are often hanging on the line. the power of the coaches or org-heads in these sporting fiefdoms is absolute. even worse when it’s an extension of a fucking unaccountable authoritarian political system that only wants to produce medals/winners with no questions asked.

it’s hard to broach, also, but you need to seriously consider the default assumptions about a young woman rejecting the advances of a powerful, influential elder male in east asian cultures. especially when they are the gatekeepers to your success and the keepers of your image/reputation. in no way would that relationship ever be balanced or symmetric. even saying no or contradicting male elders in these cultures is a social offence risking ostracism. i have zero fucking doubt whatsoever that these wily old codgers knew they could make their advances exactly as they pleased, and very few people could ever rebut them. imagine having your entire life's ambition and success wrapped up in a tiny, claustrophobic scenario with a man, whom you probably otherwise respect, trying to leverage sex or gratification from you. like, try and imagine it.

seriously think for fucking half a second before you say ‘the broad wasn’t totally innocent’. your whole sexual morality sounds fucked from a lifetime of being a reddit eunuch. ‘crazy ex’, like oh my god dude.

I don't know what the fuck you are talking about. I can only assume you don't know the details of the Peng case.

any tennis pro has been institutionalised in a professional setting by age 5-10. that's how the professional game works.

look at her bio. she was under the tutelage of 'famous coaches' from the age of 8.

the idea that it's 'fair game' and she was a 'crazy ex' in a 'relationship' is batshit crazy. the power dynamics in these relationships are fucked.

i mean you do you, dude. i don't know why you feel this compulsion to make out that child tennis stars in male-dominated settings are 'crazy exes'.

and aren't you literally the only person on this forum who has fucked around with a married woman? bragged about cucking an active serviceman? etc? why are you being weirdly moralistic and judgmental about her behaviour in this matter, lmao. what a fucking nut.
