That's not what I meant by boot camp style. I am talking more about the culture and environment. From what I understand it is a meat head locker room environment. I am not saying the thing needs to be like college but perhaps it should be more of an academic learning environment than an U.S. Army boot camp. We can't really be surprised when cops have an urban commando mindset when we use the same training system we train infantry for.
I keep making comparisons between my teacher training and certification and police stuff. It seems like police have built up a system that encourages a certain personality type while also discouraging more thoughtful people. And the results show.
I honestly dread going through the process of becoming a cop especially the the boot camp part. I don't look forward to having to make friends, placate, and get along with pig men. Same reason why I wouldn't want to join a yacht club or motorcycle club or frat. I am not going to put myself into a situation to be bullied or hazed.
But I really want a teacher wife.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

Thinking it over...if I become a cop, art teachers are off the table. No hipster/hippy art teacher wants to marry "the man". All they want to do is smoke weed and be strange. And only the art teachers do the things with hair I like and play dress up.RTHKI wrote:

Do I think we should not have police departments in America? No, I don’t. There’s no city in the world that does not have police departments. What you need are—I didn’t call for more money for police departments. I called for police departments that have well-educated, well-trained, well-paid professionals. And, too often around this country right now, you have police officers who take the job at very low payment, don’t have much education, don’t have much training—and I want to change that. I also called for the transformation of police departments into—understanding that many police departments and cops deal every day with issues of mental illness, deal with issues of addiction, and all kinds of issues which should be dealt with by mental-health professionals or others, and not just by police officers. In that letter to Schumer, you got some pushback from some of your supporters for a proposal to give better resources to police departments. [The letter argued for “ensuring that the resources are available to pay wages that will attract the top tier officers.”] The criticism was that a lot of people in the progressive movement now are calling for defunding or abolishing the police. Do you—
I think we want to redefine what police departments do, give them the support they need to make their jobs better defined. So I do believe that we need well-trained, well-educated, and well-paid professionals in police departments. Anyone who thinks that we should abolish all police departments in America, I don’t agree.

Agreed. Teaching well has to do with people skills, inherent talent, and passion, but it also requires a student body that is motivated and wants to learn. Some teachers have the genuine ability to make their less willing students care about the subject they are teaching, as passion, in the right environment, is contagious. However, all the teaching talent, advanced degrees, latest techniques, and passion, in the world will fail when faced with the nihilism found in lower income schools.Dilbert_X wrote:

people who take postgraduate teaching certification also do a lot of study into, er, teaching and education itself, you know. constructivist approaches, psychology, behaviourism, various theories and approaches to learning and cognition. there's a lot more to being a teacher than just disseminating stuff from worksheets, pre-prepared lectures and course syllabi.
christ, jay, nihilism really is one of your hobby-horses, isn't it? very few people are nihilists. nihilism is an extreme philosophical position. find a new five-dollar word to describe demoralized or disadvantaged classrooms. 12 year olds are not 'nihilists'.

What word would you use to describe an underclass that doesn't care about anything because they have no hope for a future that doesn't involve jail, drugs, and an early death? What word would you use to describe the same people that think learning is pointless, that everything is pointless, except for ephemeral pleasures?

also bacchanalia is cognate with hedonism, with dionysian excess, with sybaritism.
you get 'bacchanalian' at oxford private dining societies full of the entitled children of the super-rich, not in inner city schools.
please stop using words and philosophies you have no clue about except for their haphazard use in national review comment sections.

i do think it's really funny that american conservatives refer to its disengaged and disadvantaged underclass as 'nihilists'. like there's some infectious strain of philosophy that has taken root and has radicalized them. nietzsche meets ISIS.
