I need a new laptop after 5 years.
Lenovo looks good to me. Something from Ideapad line, Y or U series. If I buy one without an SSD, can I put one in myself?

I don't know. I guess.

yes, but you void the warranty. I have a T400 I think? I hate it, but it's a good quality laptop I guess.Pochsy wrote:

They're only like $500 right now, aren't they? At that price, fuck the warranty
Good laptops though, very solid.

no idea. My work gave it to me. They've given me a laptop, nexus 7 android tablet and an iPad2. I haven't even taken the iPad out of the box
I've refused to jump on the ipad bandwagon. I always have my laptop and smart phone on me so I don't see the point in having something that's just a mix of the two.

It's funny though, it's mostly the old guys in the office that are obsessed with their ipads. They seem to adopt new technology as quickly as it becomes popular because they're afraid of being made obsolete or something.

My uncle uses his ipad as a map/gps when flying.
I just thought about it for a second, and I think I should wait another 3 months for the Back to School sales. My eye is on the Ideapad U510.

I had this exact same conversation with a Canadian friend the other day, emphasizing the part about the material branding to get noticed by a willing mate/partner and the fact the relationships are by and large led out by wealthy circumstances.Uzique The Lesser wrote:
don't kid yourself. asians are regarded as a second-class citizen in uk elite institutions. a free money train, barely making a pass, just to get the 'esteem' of the institution/degree, before fucking back off home to an asian employment market that won't care about pesky details such as the 'grade' of the degree. most of them can barely pass conversational english. they're not "stealing" or "taking over" anything. they come and do business/management/economics courses, walk around carrying harrods bags to 'get noticed' by a willing mate/partner, and then leave/fail to get a visa after education expires.
Its still an odd culture to me.
it's not odd at all. they are playing the rules of our game. brand-logo culture and conspicuous material wealth are western inventions. they've just caught onto our global marketplace / game and are now playing it better than us, at an accelerated and steroidal rate. if you find it 'odd', it's only because you are literally 'estranged' by it, alienated in the face of their unfathomable rise to quick wealth. i am not exaggerating at all when i say that many, many asian students at my uni (admittedly a magnet for the international jet-set) all drove maseratis and ferraris. we're talking 19-22 year olds. first-generation to be born into any sort of wealth at all, let alone this sort of mega funding. they go nuts for it. who can blame them? the global capitalist culture basically thrives on these little coded messages: "driving an expensive car means you are successful" etc. sure, here in the west, after 100 years of it, a few people can say 'no thanks' and recognize it's bullshit. but over there? it's hunting season! the rich asians from my campus would go into central london and come back loaded with giant harrods bags almost every week. shit, in my postgrad year i lived in a private rented semi-mansion thing (one of my housemates was an eton boy, sent over from... japan, the son of an investment banker for a top japanese bank) and we still got through in the post every 3-4 months the harrods magazines and fee-subscription catalogues and lifestyle magazines that former asian housemates had ordered, and just not cancelled their address, or whatever. it's crazy.
but not racist. and definitely not a force of change. just the private aspects of our educational system prostituting themselves in the most cynical and self-abasing way.

yeah. they buried King Tut in gold, like all the other egyptians of his time.Uzique The Lesser wrote:

for an intellectual lightweight you*re an idiot.
So drinking shark fin soup is a western invention? You know chinese people love showing off their wealth because it directly ties into "face." Same with sending their kids to overseas top uni's, because daddy won't be embarrassed at the next golf game with his buddies.Uzique The Lesser wrote:

Another reason there's a huge influx of kids from China going to overseas uni's is that it's much easier getting into a foreign uni of the same or better ranking (asians love ranking) than it is getting into one at home. Of course I was being sarcastic with the whole "asians taking over your colleges" because nobody (except for a few racist pricks at my uni) seem to care. With the UK it's mostly international students, in Aus, US and Canada it's moslty local students, who pay local tuitions. different places different stereotypes uzi. And no, not all asians are blessed with daddy's trust fund in the former colonies.
charge your ipad, connect it to the wireless network, and put it in the bathroom so you can browse the forum when you take a dump.Jay wrote:
