I think it's the same thing as what was used previously, minus the pilot. Before drones we had A10s, AH64s, AH1s, JDAMs dropped from planes, etc. So I don't have a problem with drones per se. Their use can be questionable though, but it's the same as the aforementioned vehicles.

You're probably unaware 'the authorities' in the UK can and do intercept any communication they like, with the very high level of CCTV in the UK - including face recognition - mobile-phone pinpointing, number-plate tracking and so on the UK is one of the most surveiled and monitored countries its possible to live in.

Drones - which various Police forces are trialling (they already have helicopters so meh) - would barely add anything.

How is a drone attack any more dehumanising than an artillery round, a cruise missile, or a torpedo?

why would i be probably unaware of that? the UK has more surveillance than pretty much any other western country. i'm telling americans - a very touchy bunch over freedom and privacy normally, so long as its not post-9/11 or during bush's presidential orgasmathon - that they should be worried about drones. it is much more antithetical to their principles and 'idea' of everyday life than the one here in britain, where that sort of thing is banally justified on grounds of grey utilitarianism. "probably unaware", says the guy living in australia for the last decade to the guy who lives in the uk/london. gj.

you constantly talk to me like i'm stupid. it's funny. you go to such lengths to try and 'call out' something in every single one of my posts, just to get a temporary feeling of elation / a quick rise out of me. would you like me to send you a picture of my dick? are you allowed to look at porn in your mom's house?

We've had the discussion before, and IIRC you discounted the idea phones could be tapped without a warrant.

I'm not sure why you think anyone apart from experts at an STD conference would be interested in seeing a picture of your privates but whatever.

haha, STD conference. cute. so everyone who gets laid has an STD now? poor you. maybe mummy will let you suckle her dessicated breasts.

and nowhere have i discounted the idea phones could be tapped without warrant. it relies on some pretty sketchy legal justification - e.g. very wide definitions of 'terrorist' or 'threat to security' type clauses - but, sure, it happens. this is the world we're living in now. "the age of terror": more so by domestic governments on their own populace than by any distant and phantasmal militant networks. "IIRC" you'd know i also studied law for 2 years, and was going to take a law degree. to say i'm "probably not aware" of the state of surveillance/privacy in this country is pretty funny.

FYI phone taps and unwarranted snooping hardly goes anywhere. one of my close friend's dad works for a major telecommunications network, pretty much as a wire-tapper/content flagger, all day. it's not a job that the company wants to publicize very much, but this guy essentially sifts through volumes of network-data and texts messages that contain flagged-up 'danger' words: from terrorism, to drug-dealing, to child-abuse, whatever. again, that's in a legally grey area. it happens. but do the police come booting in your door in their iron boots? no. the police don't have infinite resources. hell, my own drug-related communications in the last few years have probably been intercepted somewhere, at some point. but what police force has the resources to send out officers to arrest someone every time a minor drug-deal is arranged by text? with all the cost? all the paperwork? and to what real community benefit, after all? the surveillance exists, but the 'police-state' conditions to enforce them effectively does not. it never will. again, all this is defended in the UK on bleak grounds of utilitarianism: the 'if i'm not doing anything wrong why should i care' type argument. i can guarantee you that not many cases are going to court, with a strong case from the CPS, with evidence obtained by snooping/unlawful surveillance.

Well now thats not how it works.

Not everyone who commits a minor transgression which is recorded electronically is going to prison to be buttraped for eternity.

What does happen is people find their electronic footprint bobs up at inconvenient moments, annoy the govt, apply for a senior role in a public institution, become some kind of public figure and words are said behind closed doors, copies of transcripts are shown 'off the record' to interested parties and career avenues are mysteriously closed off or their life takes some other unexpected turn without them having a clue about the how or why.

Thats how a 'benign' Police state works.

yes because every single person who ever sends a text or communication with a legally dubious content is going to want to become a "public figure" someday. is this your ellided way of saying your dad had to leave civil service after smoking a bit of weed?

Aside, military drone research can also have non-military benefits, such as new tech for search & rescue or land surveys.

Indeed so! I would never get to any high public position.

Thing is, in the future a lot of politicians are going to have shit come up. Who knows how many trash talking imbeciles today will grow up to be intelligent members of society only to be screwed over by their past internet records.

i think it only speaks of your narcissism if you genuinely believe the general public are really going to give a fuck what you said about video-games and popular debates on an internet forum in 2008.

Depends how much of a public figure people become, and its more about the gutter press than anything.
The average minor celebrity is going to have a work-experience kid put on their case, anyone security-vetted will have everything found - and if you omit any online aliases when asked you're even more screwed than if they find you offered to send strangers a png of your penis.

dilbert i can only hope i become a famous and world-renowned author one day, so that journos will dig through my virtual trash and unearth and rediscover, a thousand times over, with every single printed press page, how i humiliated you and made you look like an idiot. it will be incredible. i welcome the day. amen.
