Stuff like this person committing suicide is why it is illegal in the U.S. to put someone on the radio without their consent. That is why those war of the roses skits on the radio have to be faked.Mutantbear wrote:

aussies, how much would i need if i came over for a week or two? hiring cars, hostels, food etc?
ok, 3 weeks
Depends where you stay and where you're visiting. Fairly expensive if it's all hotels. Backpackers will be a fair bit cheaper.
Also depends time of year and what's going on any given weekend in the city you're visiting. For example, late October and mid November on the Gold Coast is usually a shit time to book because they have Indy Cars and then schoolies week, so the whole place gets booked out so the hotels charge their rack rate (most expensive rate they charge).
Generally speaking though if it's all hotels and you get a decent rate expect to pay around ~$120 a night (rough ballpark figure), which may include breakfast.
Hire cars are roughly on par with what I saw in the US. You can get a Hyundai Getz for around $40 a day or so. It gets cheaper per day the more days you book consecutively. If you're staying in say Sydney or Melbourne you won't need a car as public transport is pretty good to get you most places. Brisbane you would want a car if you want to drive to the Gold Coast (there are trains and shuttle buses too).
Food is a bit more expensive than the US, not ridiculously so. Average restaurant dinner is anywhere from $15-$50 a main, but most good, reasonable places you're looking around $20-$25, maybe a bit cheaper for pizza/pasta, maybe a bit more expensive for a steak. Pubs generally do good meals and often have specials seven days a week, so some days they might have $10 steak with any drink purchase, another day it could be $2 tacos, etc. We have the usual takeaway places like Maccas, KFC, Hungry Jacks (Burger King), Subway etc.

call it 17 days, fly into Sydney, back pack and kon tiki tours to get around, maybe adelaide via melbourne, back to Sydney to fly back.
Have some friends in Adelaide that I'm going to see, and will stay with them a few days at least, but I don't have to be limited to those places.

Definitely visit Sydney and Melbourne then, they're both cool in their own ways. Gold Coast is overrated.
Adelaide is a cruisy place but kinda boring when I was there in 2004. I would recommend a few days there to see your friends and the rest of the time somewhere else.

Say you spend a week in Adelaide to see your friends, and that time is the middle of the journey. I'd fly into Sydney, get a train from the airport ($15.50) and stay at a backpackers in the CBD which generally anywhere is around $35-$40 a night. CBD you can walk to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House is there too. Taronga Zoo is just over the other side, you can catch a bus there. Sydney itself there's a lot to explore and wander around to see, like Circular Quay (where the bridge and Opera House are), Darling Harbour (which is only a few minutes walk from China Town). You can catch a five min train to Kings Cross (night life and red light district lol) or a ~20 min train to Bondi Beach.PrivateVendetta wrote:

Head to Adelaide, you could probably get a flight around $150.
Sick. Thanks a lot. I'll ask for some more info and opinions when I get more into planning. Gonna look into it next week, only found out the days I'm getting out there this week (arriving something like the 10th Jan...lol), so it's not a long time in the planning.
A$3000 a decent amount? Flights there and back aren't a factor, just internal possibly.
