Of course I don't have it all figured out. I don't give advice on anything I don't have experience with. Am I wrong about sugar? Whats the problem with sharing information? Are you upset because you're a sugar addict?

Tucker, I know I might come across as a know it all, but I know I'm not and no one is. I'd rather put out what I think is right at the moment and hope it does Jay or whoever else some good even it makes me seem however it is you perceive me. I'm not a parent, and if I ever become one I hope to remember all the stuff I'm shouting now.

The world would be a very boring place without sugar. Do you avoid risen breads too?

Does anybody know Dickey's BBQ pit? I think that's the name. There's one opening down the street a mile from my house. I can't wait to dig into their amazing beef brisket and cornbread!

I try to eat more whole grains than breads. It's fine for adults to moderate their diets and to enjoy sugar, just like its fine to enjoy alcohol or any other drug in moderation. But children shouldn't be expected to be able to control themselves when ingesting a drug. There is no reason for kids to expect a sweet every night after dinner or throughout the day in juices or deserts with lunches or in the morning with sugary cereal or syrupy pancakes. It's sets up children for ADD/ADHD and for future addictions and health problems.

No no. The idea behind your advice is great.

I worry that denying all "bad" things and being extreme about that denial (no tv, no video games, no sweets) could lead to a young adult that has no gauge on how to handle them when they become a little more independent.

So, if you never give a child a cookie, and you are super extreme in your stance on sweets, could you be encouraging your child to hide sweets from you once they get old enough?

I just have too many friends that have super strict parents that denied them a lot of things that went pretty apeshit as soon as they were "free".

BTW, sugar in general isn't a bad thing. Just like fats...there are good sugars and bad sugars.

Refined sugar is nothing but toxic.

I agree with you, that's why sugary treats should be eaten on special occasions. So that the child learns to cherish it on those special occasions. All other times, so long as the kid is given a balanced diet, s/he shouldn't have the physical desire to eat refined sugar. With enough complex carbs the sugar craving innate in us is satisfied.

But I've witnessed the opposite, where parents give in to the will of the child and the child winds up feeling like they need or deserve a sweet on a daily basis. All of it can be avoided with a balanced diet. Chicken nuggets and corn is not a balanced meal.

Or you can let the kids do whatever they want in moderation. They will balance themselves out. Over bearing parents make freaks.

Surely that would just build more psychological craving?

The only treat I ever had was frozen fruit juice lollies and I turned out OK.

You can't and shouldn't prevent your children from making their own food choices outside the home. As long as you have a solid diet at home you ensure your child's normal and sane behavior.

Feeding your child is not over protecting it. From birth to at least 14 you're likely to have near complete control over your child's diet. Just feed them at each meal time and they will be much less likely to have the desire to eat shitty foods. People think going to mcds is easier and cheaper than buying groceries and cooking food. Then they get diabeetus and a erectile dysfunction. This shit isn't complicated. People are just brain washed and pumped full of otherwise unnecessary pharmaceuticals. Eating a real diet includes the use of medicinal herbs. Which, except for those extreme cases, eliminate the need for industry drugs. But it's all because of media brainwashing and scientific plots against us.
