Be thankful your not in Sth africa waiting for an police response - it's just been suggested there that police use bikes or donkeys to improve response times

The point of taking hostages is to barter for something. 10 times out of 10 the hostages aren't killed becasue they heard the siren of a patrol car, that would defeat the purpose of taking a hostage.

You watch too many movies, there are specific guidlines used for the use of the Siren, for example if i'm heading to a call with a report of a suspicious person peering into windows.. i'm not pulling a Hollywood by screaming down the road with all the lights on and the siren wailing.  If i'm heading to an accident, you can bet your ass all the lights are activated and the siren is on.

One evening I was giving a mate a lift home. Stopped at some traffic lights to turn right. I couldn't see the oncoming traffic as there was a fence between the lanes ,but the light went green for me so off I go. Coming the other way was an ambulance doing roughly twice the speed limit straight through the light with only his lights on. The guy did a great job and managed to avoid us by a couple of milimetres and a lot of screetching tyres. A bit of swearing and he was back on his way. The point is, if he had the sirens going I would have heard him and wouldn't have pulled out.

I guess the point is sirens are very good at allowing the emergency services to get places fast without causing accidents on the way.

They SHOULD show up. But without their stupid sirens blaring, so they actually have the upper hand and have time to take down the criminals before they even know what happened.
Hey Zimmer......it's like this. Without the lights/siren, we are forced to drive the speed limit. That means it takes WAY longer to get somewhere in an emergency. So, let me ask you then.......if someone was trying to kill or rape a member of your family, would you want me to drive the speed limit and obey every traffic law so I don't scare the guy away? Or would you rather I turn on my lights/siren and get there in time to actually do some good? If the guy runs......SO WHAT......we chase him on foot, in cars, with dogs and helicopters. The point is, WE GET THERE IN TIME TO DO SOME GOOD. Understand the point yet?
Of course I understand the point.
But is it not possible to have no sirens and just lights?

You'd be amazed how most drivers don't even notice us with lights and sirens, nevermind just lights...
