Ok fellas I am looking for an external HD of 500 gig capacity or more. Key component here is speed. I am not going to drop 700 usd on a 500 gig Hd but I know you get what you pay for. If you have suggestions please share the specs on it. This drive is going to be used to store movies, music, and backup data.

The more you can fill in the better.
1. Capacity:
2. Rotational Speed:
3. Cache Size:
4. Port Connectors:
5. Average Latency:
6 .Data Transfer Rate to/from:
7. Price:

Most new hard drives atm for eg sata drives can put a constant 50mb/s of data, to get the same speed as an internal drive you will have to look for a firewire external drive using the 800mbps speed which will peak at upto 80mb/s there abouts, you would have to make sure you have firewire connectors on your pc as well

Cheapest common way though is to get a usb2.0 external drive which max's at 48mb/s throughput which maybe a little slower on the newest fastest drive but is most cost effective. Nothing beats a straight internal drive though

Well, if you dont want to fiddle with drives, and boxes and cables, and the choice of this or that drive.... Get a Lacie box. They come rather large, and have both USB2 and firewire support. Just remember that once you go from 2½ inch drives to something larger, you need an external powersupply, and that makes the large 3½ inch drives unhandy..... Downsode is that I pretty much doubt you can get a 2½ inch drive as a 500 GB....

Wow some one is reading my mind...
I just got the Lacie d2 extreme. 500 gig allows USB 2/Firewire 400/ Fire wire 800.
I am using Firewire 400 for which I get close to 50 meg per sec when i get my new mobo I'll set it up with Firewire 800 which is close to 100 meg per sec using their cables.(so we will see). I have 2 internal 150 gig 10k rpm raptors on the way(16 meg ),setup in Raid 0.

Anyways here it is, thx for the advice. I just needed a little conformation..lol

It is fully capable of being mounted internally also.
