Some of you guys seriously seem to suffer from a lack of knowledge about WW 1. WW 1 was hellish trench stagnation. The trenches were boring, cold, wet, and uncomfortable (guess where the term trench foot got invented?). Supplies were skimpy. Some men lost their foot because they lacked decent shoes. But that was better than hearing a whistle.

Still getting slaughtered by machine gun fire
Over their barbed wire and possibly mines

And maybe by some miracle, a few infantry got to the other side, out of a whole battalion. Not that they managed to do anything, though.
And yet those stupid WW 1 generals persisted in using Civil War tactics with modern weapons.
At least the planes woulnd'nt be overpowered, though.
