EDIT: See last part for short version...if you have trouble reading this much. -Pug
I searched a bit...didn't find something completely the same so:
Thinking about a what if?
To give you an idea, my playstyle went thru a few phases:
1) Try not to die too much/figure out maps
2) Go for medals/awards
3) Play to win (or if the situation is hopeless, points)
4) Force playing one kit per day - so I don't think "oh, this is a sniping map" - to get better.
5) Play for fun, but with long-range badge/medal goals.
If you play only for fun...so do I...but do you remember when you got your first knife badge? or transport badge by running over everyone? A blast...and an accomplishment...that's what I'm talking about.
I'm finding going from 1st Sgt to Sgt Mjr is a long road. I'm also in between Silver & Gold on all my badges - 70 hrs per kit. to go..ouch. I'm like, wow...these aren't really goals...this is an endurance test. Yeah, I play for fun...but I liked it better when I got an award or something. Gold/silver/bronze rounds are ok, but I usually care about only a few things: 1) Win 2) Positive K/D ratio. I'm happy with a 10 pt round if I helped out somehow...but I can't really recall any 10 pt rounds where I met the Win & K/D ratio requirement...
So I had an idea which of course will never be used - plus I thought I'd post it here to get it out of my head:
Why not combine the rank up & badging? Its currently in place for the highest ranks!
For instance:
Sergeant requires 5000 pts & lvl 2 badges
Gunney requires 7500 pts & lvl 3 badges
1st Sergeant: requires 15000 pts & lvl 4 badges
Badge levels (note: this is for EVERY kit):
Lvl 1 - 5 kills per kit/IAR & 1 hr/Kit
Lvl 2 - 7 kills per kit/IAR & 3 hrs/Kit
Lvl 3 - 9 kills per kit/IAR & 5 hrs/Kit
Lvl 4 - 11 kills per kit/IAR & 7 hrs/Kit
This was an example of the idea only...not meant to be taken to seriously...I'm making the point where you start small and then gradually increase the Kill per Round requirement and time required. The idea is that it gets harder and harder to rank up - you rank up by logging a big round, enough hours, and enough points to rank up. It's not just "points" to rank up. Plus it forces people to play more kits...
Problems:
-Unlocks - Getting a better weapon = more kills. You only need one badge...and it doesn't have an unlock. It's harder to get kills without the unlock.
-Vet/Exp designation - Since you in a sense would be "wiping" your Vet and Expert badges with every rank, the is no more real "Vet" or "Expert" badges...only really good rounds. Something needs to be added (see below).
-Do I really have to play as a "XXXX" kit? - Yes. But you can tweak the hour/kit requirement down so it's not a matter of endurance.
Positives:
-Vet/Expert Medal badge - the Marksman medal would be impacted...so these "rank up" badges could be added ON TOP of the current medal system. If you still want these as endurance goals...they're still there.
-Goal oriented - gives short term goals for those who have been playing a really long time.
-Variety - Medic whoring on Karky will not get you the next rank anymore. You may actually have to play another map/kit sometime. Also, it probably means there are more people playing a variety of kits on every map - since short term kit goals means you'll be mixing it up more often. Personally, I would have never played Spec Ops to do anything but Jihad (fun, but not skillful...too much fun actually)...now I've figured out how to sneak up and plant better because of the "one kit per day" philosophy above.
Anyway, I had to write it down to make it go away. Thanks, and send me your bill...
Edit:
Short version:
Add requirements to promotions to include:
1) A gradually increasing time & Kills/Round requirement for each Kit
2) You must do this with all kits
Gives short term goals for those who have played a lot time.
Increases kit variety - you can't play Medic only to rank up.
