Hi all,
Currently I have a computer that was called a "Dino" http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=40625.
So I would like to go go on the cheap to get some type of greater BF2 functionality from this bad beast.
The components are
Foxconn NF4K*AB-RS Motherboard (will support athlon 64/sempron Socket 754)
AMD Sempron 3100+ Paris Core (1.8GHZ)
and an XFX PVT72GWANG Geforce 7300 GS (which a bonehead at the local computer store is telling me is showing up as an FX5500 {Crackhead})
I also have 2G of pc3200

What i was thinking of doing was spending 73 bucks on a http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80506 2.0 GHz processor.
Only because I don't want to have to spend a lot on my habit.
Unless someone can make a suggestion on a socket 939 board and processor for around 70 bucks each.

Thanks!

hard to say without seeing a tech sheet on your motherboard, but if it is PCI-express compatible, then i would think you could gain more from a newer video card for 150-200$ then you could from upgrading your processor. Ram wise you are good, but your cpu and video card are holding your back :-/

maybe save more money and wait and work up a new system with all of the price drops lately.

Your video card is the problem.  Don't waste money upgrading a decnt CPU.
Just Overclock it :
add some votage to the CPU (+.1v or so)
lower your ram speed to 166
raise your CPU or HTT speed to 250Mhz
drop your HTT multiplier from 4x to 3x.
That works 90% of the time.  You might have to add a little voltage to the ram also though.  If the system refuses to boot at this setting you may have to reset the bios (to clear it), but it only sets everything back to standard and you lose no data.

You should probably read a little about overclocking if you've never done it.  extremeoverclocking.com is a good place to start.

We are talking about the FX5500 right? and not the 7300 (unless they are the same, way to many to keep track of nowadays.)

OK so I was thinking, I can get a great deal on a 7800 with 256. I just have to trade him my 512 5500 card.

Thoughts? Comments?

7800 is a pretty good card, much better than your previous. I think you will see good performance improvement with that as much as you would with anything else short of a major overhaul.

Processor might not make much impact. I would get on a new board (i know more $$$$) but start going in the direction .... peice by peice if needed.

Well I went forward with it. I managed to get an Athlon 64 3400 upgrading from the Sempron 3100. A 600MHZ jump in performance works nicely. It is a 7300 like I stated in my first post.
So now the specs are as follows.

Foxconn NF4K*AB-RS Motherboard (will support athlon 64/sempron Socket 754)
XFX PVT72GWANG Geforce 7300 GS
2G of pc3200
AMD Athlon 3400+ (running at 2.4Ghz)
