So I need a few more hours in armor to get a badge but don't really enjoy whoring it up all that much.  I'm a ground pounder for the most part.  I enjoy commanding quite a lot so I decided, hey, I can hop in an APC as an engineer and go one of the 2-6 positions and command from inside whilst the driver does his thing.  I can repair any other APC's or tanks that are close by, and from time-to-time hope out and wrench up my guy's APC.  99% of the time, I'm still in full commander view doing what a commander should... commanding.

So I show up on people's screens as the most despised being on planet earth... a commander in armor.  Granted, I would complain too, but man, people sure got pissed.  I got kicked from a couple servers and got verbally pelted pretty much non-stop.

So, I'm honestly doing my commanding job (what good are those shitty side guns on the APC anyway?) PLUS repairing nearby tanks PLUS wrench-repairing my guy once or twice per round.  So, am I totally lame?  Am I only semi-lame?  Am I a good team-player who actually did more good by repairing things out in the field.

(P.S.  There were no assett attacks during any of the rounds I'm talking about but had there been, I would have high-tailed it back to base or dropped supplies if all armor were close to crates)

Thoughts?

To me it depends on how long Armor is stting around. If it stays sitting around most of the time.. i take it so the enemy does not. Sometimes though regardless of this circumstance I've been kicked because some ahole kicks no matter what as long as they see a commander in a vehicle. My rule: "As long as its good for the team"

Most people prefer their commanders doing it 24/7 without the interruptions. As in i prefer you giving uav/ supplies / arty support when i requested, not after you finish your extra curricular activities!

Although I would assume the usual nubs saw you in a apc and thought you were driving, therefore you got the abuse...

If he's talking about Kurkant then he's right - Tanks/APC's dont fight tanks or apcs, so he's safe Command inside the APC!

Not lame. If you werent the one actually shooting the APC's main gun or driveing it, then I see nothing wrong.

Perfectly good tactic, that I someday would perhaps use.  Though i don't blame them for getting mad becasue all they saw was the APC with the star behind it.  I would have yelled too, though, but after a simple explenation they should have been fine with it.

Yeah there those rare times where there are mulitple strong squads that know what to ask for (arty included) .. in which case a commnder can move around more ... like hitching a ride in a transport helo to some other part of the map.

The measure of how your doing is how many tickets you have compared to there's, if your wining then it should not matter where you are or what your doing, but most just look at an excuse to blame anyone but themselves if your at that point losing!!

Great tactic. You contribute to your team in many ways. And you are protected from most infantry. (YES I know I proposed a kill timer for commanders in vehicules in another thread, but don't call me a hypocrite for agreeing with the OP. He isn't actively using the APC)

Im really unsure what you are saying... If there was a bunch of strong squads making requests for support then the commander really shouldn't be moving anywhere........ There really is no need!

While riding in the back of an APC has its merits, it's got drawbacks too.

Most importantly, if you're hanging out on the front lines instead of back at homebase safe in a bunker, you're far more likely to get killed.  And if you die, the orders, scans and artillery stop flowing.  Sure, it's only for a little while, but it still can make a difference.

Other than that, there's no real problem, I guess, as long as you're prepared to deal with the hassle of being told to get the hell out of the armour as commander...

I think it is fine, accualy you are doing a service.  You will get killed, however if you can command 100%, fix some armor in the process, and be willing to take some deaths for the time.  I think it is a stand up job.

I have done the same and had to spend half the time explaining, as you did, what I was doing.  They caught on and all was well after we kept winning.

If you lose while doing it... it is always your fault.

What I'm saying is: With string squads it is easier to get close to the action, move around for repairs easier (where assets are scattered) ... thats what I'm saying. I can't stay hudled behind crates for the entire game, I like to get repairs work any local aa/tow emplacements .... and don't say you can't command whilst doing those things ...

I don't think you understood what I was saying. I am saying, that if i saw an APC with the comander star behind it (and had no idea what he was actually doing) I would have yelled.  BUT, after an explenation that he was in the passenger seats doing his job, I would have no problem.  Also, next time you want to have a discussion with somone, refrain from the name calling.  Especially if all you can think of is any form of noob.

In my opinion that's fine. Explain to the complainers what you're doing (sitting in the side seat while commanding). IMO, perfectly legit way to command as well as helping your team. Carry on.

Not lame.

If I join a server which hasn't started and then gets going once 10 people have joined I'll go commander in a tank just until there are enough people in the server that I'm not disadvantaging the team by sitting around doing nothing. As soon as there are enough (say 7-8 a side) I either go full time commander or give up the command spot for someone else. I don't do both purely because it's bloody hard work and your doing neither to the fullest.

Define safe place if there is such thing in BF2. Commanders, like commander assets, are legitimate targets and many players take great pleasure in hunting them down. As infantry, there really isn't a safe place to hide, even in uncaps (there exception might be carriers but that doesn't help the MEC/CHINA commanders)
