Infantry only is a cop-out. BF is about the whole theatre of war.
I wouldn't call it a cop out, but instead it's just another aspect of war. The reality of war is there isn't always enough materiel to go around. Good soldiers make do with what they've got.

but this is debating wether or not Dice should spend valuble coding time making a silly infantry mod for the game....
when in the majority of battlefield players eyes they would rather have dice create a game without crashes and bugs... Hence focus on the point of the game (total warfare) and leave the little infantry skirmishes to other game developers.
It's really up to DICE to decide if they're willing to wear the cost of developing customised mods to suit the 'whiners'. Yes, sorry if that offends, but if you really hate the game, the map, or whatever then don't play. If I got worked up every time I got my ass filled with shrapnel, I'd never enjoy it. Face it, some players are better than others. You have good days, and days when you get your privates sent in a different direction to the rest of your infantry. Get over it, or be constructive, but moaning about it won't solve anything, though it'll make you sound pretty stupid and immature. Personally though, I'd rather they focus on the core and producing tools to help the community to make the game greater than it already is.

If you don't like Infantry Only => don't play it. This feature makes the game even more versatile and improves the game experience.
I played on Karkand the other day where everyone (except for a couple of vehicle whores) played by the rules and used knife, pistol or paddle only. It was surreal, and a great deal of fun. I earned my basic pistol in a hurry (I was getting impatient), and it made for an entirely different style of play. I could just imagine this would only be a better scenario in a kind of office building scenario, with NPC's that need to be protected from friendly fire. Anyway, it was fun, different, not why I normally get on and play, but I'll probably do it again just for a change of pace.
What I'd really like to see is a whole new realm of customisation. Everything from the vehicles allowed or disallowed, to limiting a game to knife only, or pistol only, or allowing games to be set up so that a handful of players could spawn on one side with a weapon/vehicular advantage, with the other team loaded simply with ground-pounders. Situations where protection of vital assets or a civilian population is a primary mission goal, that sort of thing. Adds an element of realism, risk and reward that is missing from nearly all FPS's, including Battlefield.
Back to PT's issue of DICE 'wasting time', I think getting the game right is most important. leave the modding to the community that seem to be doing so well adding their owns support to the game, but adding lashings of customisable elements so that each time you visit a map, it can be played very differently.
Sorry for the long first post. Lots to say after lurking here for a while ;-)
