Thats why I need some help. I have been playing BF2 at my friends house for a while and I wanna get a computer to start playing it at my house. I found a computer for sale with the following specs:

HP Pentium 4 Desktop
18 GHZ
512 Mb ram
80 GB HD
DVD/RW (I know it doesnt matter for playing BF2...but its there)
17" moniter
windows XP

Is this a decient computer and what would i need to do to get it to play BF2.

Thanks in advance. Drug_dealer111

I assume you mean 1.8 GHz, not 18... However, depends mainly on the graphics card inside.

A 1.8 GHz CPU and 512 MB of RAM might be just enough to be able to play BF2 [even if never more than 30 fps ingame I guess], but for BF2142 it won't be enough I think.

first question is how much money do you have and are planning to spend?

secondly:

what video card and processor model/speed?

Unless you are getting something for like 100-200$, you would best be suited to buy another system. I wouldn't expect to be able to get a system that can play BF2 reasonably for under 800$ or so, if you spend around $1000 you could get something pretty decent.

1.8 is not enough. DO NOT BUY IT. I think its crap. I know those kind of computers with their damn bad graphics card.

Well just buy something with about 3.0 ghz and atleats 1GB of ram and finally a 6800, then it will be pretty good.

probably 1.8 ... I got it out of an ad in a paper. However it didnt list what the graphics card was. If i got the computer, how much would it take to make a good (decient where im not laging all the time) computer with decient grapics. It was for sale for 250 dollers

dude, you can play bf2 DECENT on more then medium with a 600EURO computer. so 800 dollar is more then enough to play bf2. (oke, you wont get good frames at all times, but for budget its more then enough)

edit:

since you dont know much about computers (topic starter), i recomment first getting some knowledge, then make your own system. its cheaper and better then a complete system.

anyway, for bf2 you need minimum (imo):
a cheap vid card with good specs: Asus Radeon X1300 Pro TD Silent 256MB DDR2 PCI-E DVI EAX1300PRO/TD (just copyd name) (70-80 euros)
nice amount of ram. the more the better to much cant hurt. try going for at least 1Gb, 2Gb is better, you dont really need more then 2Gb.(price is different with every speed ect. exepect at least 70 euros for good 1gb. 150 is cheapest i saw for good 2Gb ram (2x1GB).)
Proccescor, inpents on the mobo you take, but try to get a dual core. at least 2.4Ghz for intel, for amd i have no idear.(120-alot euros)
Soundcard, not very importend on a budget game system, but get something like the audigy 2.

harddrive.... get one with a good cache (spelling?).

you would need more memory (1gig at least preferably 2)  and it really depends if the motherboard inside can have a upgraded Video card,  HP's are notorious for leaving the AGP slot off there motherboards

Then you have to make it yourself.

Hey how much does a good motherboard cost.

a PCI-E (best there is atm), one that is needed for the system i discribed costs around 80 euros.

edit: since your new to computers, you problebly dont want to overclock it. and by the time you know enough to do that, youl want a better system. (that part was ment for topic starter)

Yeah, don't get it. For a start P4s are rubbish - especially a 1.8GHz one, a 1.8GHz Athlon 64 (3000+) will only set you back about £60 ($35-40) and would be perfectly ok for BF2 (not perfect, but the most BF2 really needs is a 3500+) a GB and half of memory is about what you need to run it perfectly, but you can't really get that - not running dual channel certainly so it'll have to be 1GB (perfectly ok) or 2GB (perfect). The GPU is the most important thing for BF2 a vanilla Geforce 6600 would do (a GT would be better) a 7600GT is probably the best value at the moment though, or a 7900GT would be even better - GTX is maybe overkill and certainly isn't worth the extra money.
