Intel prepares for biggest launch ever
David B Spencer, Employee Communications
July 24, 2006 (WW30)

Thursday will be a historic day: Intel officially will launch the best processors on the planet. They boast a powerful new microarchitecture, two cores, and technology for energy-efficient performance. They incorporate the most significant design improvements since the Pentium® 4 processor architecture was introduced in 2000.

We’ve read the blockbuster benchmark reports in the press and heard our executives talk optimistically about new products coming—so what’s really happening on July 27?

The world will find out just how much customers will gain from Intel’s newest processors. Paul Otellini will introduce the new platforms. Sean Maloney will explain how Intel developed them and how the company will sustain its technical leadership. Computers with the Intel Core 2 Duo and Core Extreme processors are available now, with more desktop and laptops arriving in August. They will be showcased at the launch event.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo is rooted in newest technology
The Intel Core 2 Duo processors each contain 291 million transistors. They combine the Intel Core microarchitecture and 65-nm process technology, as does the recently introduced Intel® Xeon Processor 5100 series. They are optimized for performance per watt.

With two cores running at lower speeds, dual-core processors can keep power consumption low while processing more data.
The new microarchitecture for dual-core chips originated with designers in Israel. Parallel design teams created the dual-core chips for specific market segments: “Woodcrest” for servers, “Conroe” for desktops and game machines, and “Merom” for notebooks.

The launch event will provide details of the new processors and a chance to see the technology in a competitive bake-off for each segment.

New chips measure up
To succeed in today's competitive environment, a chip manufacturer needs to consider three readily measured technical elements: performance, power consumption, and price. The Intel Core microarchitecture lowers power consumption and increases performance.

Compared to the best Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, the new processors increase performance by as much as a 40 percent, and they are 40 percent more energy efficient. They offer more performance than the competition at each cost point.

New chips invigorate platforms
Desktop and mobile multi-core chips are the heart of new platforms.

Intel Core 2 Duo processors go into Intel® Viiv technology platforms for home entertainment and into Intel® Centrino® Duo and Intel® vPro technology platforms for business.
Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processors go into platforms for playing ultra realistic games and creating advanced digital media.
These new dual-core processors and energy-efficient platforms run demanding multiple applications faster, enabling users to view smoother high-definition TV, protect the PC and its assets during e-commerce transactions, and experience longer battery life while using sleeker and lighter notebooks.

Pricing

Core 2 Extreme X6800 - $999 - 4mb - 2.93ghz
Core 2 Duo E6700 - $530 - 4mb - 2.67ghz
Core 2 Duo E6600 - $316 - 4mb - 2.4ghz
Core 2 Duo E6400 - $224 - 2mb - 2.13ghz
Core 2 Duo E6300 - $183 - 2mb - 1.86ghz

----------------------

I'd go for the 6600, simply because its the lowest 4mb chip and from what ive seen.. the overclocking potential is huge even on air.

We'll see.

the pricing you posted are all in units of 1000's, i think there would be a 15% markup, i saw a store selling E6600 for 350usd

Now the question then really becomes, what about OS support ?

I mean really... If any of you hve ever tried a dual CPU machine then you'll know what I'm talking about. It's nice that you have the extra power, assuming your OS supports it.... And two cores is good if they can each process different threads. This is VERY handy when running many apps at the same time.
However, for game usage, where ONE app is needing a LOT of CPU power, will EACH core be faster than what you have now ? Because I have yet to see games that can take advantage of dual CPUs... And if you need to buy the top of the line CPU just to get on par with a semi old P4 CPU, then I dont mind expending a few extra watts to save that $1000 for a new chip and a couple of hundred more for a new board.

IMO, dont buy now.. wait a month or two and see what people have to say about it.

Indeed, in germany the E6600 is around 340-350 €.

Because I have yet to see games that can take advantage of dual CPUs...
Most games are single threaded right now, therefore there is nearly no performance increase between a single core and dual core CPU - but you don't buy the CPU not only for today's games, but for future games like Crysis etc.

Crysis for example supports Dual Core CPU and the programmers even recommend Dual Core CPUs.

dual cores are cheap to produce and ermm if you have dual core games would be a tad faster coz one core concetrates on game, the other on background stuff.

and only the extreme edition core 2 is 1000 dollars, the rest are cheap. and w/ core 2 duo you can shut off one core and have all the 4mb cache in one core.

dual core cpu's? maybe useless now, but in a few months there would be dual core supported games, and stop derailing this thread, this is about Core 2 duo (conroe) not dual core cpus

every1 knew intel was evil

to fox: a celly oced to 4ghz is the same as a pentium D at 3.0ghz, same speed.

I was about to say that's the same price, but that's the same price in euros, I forgot the huge difference between  the two. In the UK then, we pay 1230 dollars!

By the way, has anyone else noticed that of all the motherboards out there that support the Conroe chips, there's none that support SLI (dual Nvidia cards).  Several will support Crossfire (dual ATI cards) though.

err yes they can support SLI... but you need hack drivers Nvidia is releasing 590 and 570 SLI chipsets later in august

wait untill a week or so after the release to buy a motherboard...thats when all the good ones will be out.

also, the prices listed are Intels MSRP, and not the actual retail price...that depends on the vender.

also, i have notcied that the chips will be much more expensive in comparison to US prices in Europe....the 6600 would cost the USD equivelent of $440 in England...go figure

the information is a from an Intel press release on their media site....thank to [TUF]dubman for getting this for us.

Don't buy the dual core!!! Wait another month and get the quad core!!!!!

If you have a dual core ready mobo, they will accept the newer quad core's so it's not a total loss.

The Intel Quad Core Kentsfield will be around 1000 $... I don't think that most of you want to spent so much money for a processor. Honestly - this article is written by someone who has no clue about Intel & AMDs Roadmap and interpreted a mess into it.

when kentsfield come out it will be in E6700 version and will be like EE... i saw one on auction by coolaler(guy who has conroe and kentsfield... lives in the same city as i am)

quad cores will come at the end of this year. Nvidia SLI mobos as i said are out in around august, but 975X chipsets can do SLI, but you need to hack the bios
