Thursday will be a historic day: Intel officially will launch the best processors on the planet. They boast a powerful new microarchitecture, two cores, and technology for energy-efficient performance. They incorporate the most significant design improvements since the Pentium® 4 processor architecture was introduced in 2000.
We’ve read the blockbuster benchmark reports in the press and heard our executives talk optimistically about new products coming—so what’s really happening on July 27?
The world will find out just how much customers will gain from Intel’s newest processors. Paul Otellini will introduce the new platforms. Sean Maloney will explain how Intel developed them and how the company will sustain its technical leadership. Computers with the Intel Core 2 Duo and Core Extreme processors are available now, with more desktop and laptops arriving in August. They will be showcased at the launch event.
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo is rooted in newest technology
The Intel Core 2 Duo processors each contain 291 million transistors. They combine the Intel Core microarchitecture and 65-nm process technology, as does the recently introduced Intel® Xeon Processor 5100 series. They are optimized for performance per watt.
With two cores running at lower speeds, dual-core processors can keep power consumption low while processing more data.
The new microarchitecture for dual-core chips originated with designers in Israel. Parallel design teams created the dual-core chips for specific market segments: “Woodcrest” for servers, “Conroe” for desktops and game machines, and “Merom” for notebooks.
The launch event will provide details of the new processors and a chance to see the technology in a competitive bake-off for each segment.
New chips measure up
To succeed in today's competitive environment, a chip manufacturer needs to consider three readily measured technical elements: performance, power consumption, and price. The Intel Core microarchitecture lowers power consumption and increases performance.
Compared to the best Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, the new processors increase performance by as much as a 40 percent, and they are 40 percent more energy efficient. They offer more performance than the competition at each cost point.
New chips invigorate platforms
Desktop and mobile multi-core chips are the heart of new platforms.
Intel Core 2 Duo processors go into Intel® Viiv technology platforms for home entertainment and into Intel® Centrino® Duo and Intel® vPro technology platforms for business.
Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processors go into platforms for playing ultra realistic games and creating advanced digital media.
These new dual-core processors and energy-efficient platforms run demanding multiple applications faster, enabling users to view smoother high-definition TV, protect the PC and its assets during e-commerce transactions, and experience longer battery life while using sleeker and lighter notebooks.
----------------------
Pricing
Core 2 Extreme X6800 - $999 - 4mb - 2.93ghz
Core 2 Duo E6700 - $530 - 4mb - 2.67ghz
Core 2 Duo E6600 - $316 - 4mb - 2.4ghz
Core 2 Duo E6400 - $224 - 2mb - 2.13ghz
Core 2 Duo E6300 - $183 - 2mb - 1.86ghz
----------------------
I'd go for the 6600, simply because its the lowest 4mb chip and from what ive seen.. the overclocking potential is huge even on air.
We'll see.
