I was playnig around the other day, and realized I could launch my F-35 like a rocket, a real Vertical Take Off. However, try as I might, I was unable to perform a Vertical Landing in the same matter. The nose of a plane just isn't strong enough when hurtling to the ground at a few hundred miles an hour.

Down to business. This is how you perform a real VTO:

First, you want to build up a bit of speed, not too much, but enough to get your craft moving. I advise you to choose the F-35 aligned on the runway, as you have much more space to perform your VTO than the other plane, perched on the ledge.

Second, while you're rolling down the runway, quickly let go of the thrust and deccelerate while pulling your nose up, still moving though. You need this momentum for the next part, otherwise you'll just flop back down.

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/vtol1.jpg

Now, keep on raising that pitch until you're at a 45 degree angle. Now, throttle up! Full power to the engines, afterburner, the works. Don't let go of that pitch, keep on bringing the nose up!

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/vtol2.jpg

If timed right, your engine nozzle will in the flying position just when you're almost perpendicular. During this part your elevators are digging into the tarmac but thanks to the magic fairy engineers aboard the USS Essex your plane doesn't explode. Yay for magic fairy engineers!

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/vtol3.jpg

Fifth step now, keep the power coming, and straighten up your pitch so you're going to the moon. Be careful, you don't want to be perfectly perpendicular when you're still on the ship, because you can't take damage from 2 more fins in hot tarmac.

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/vtol4.jpg

And you're off, leaving all your mates starin' at you to get bombed by the enemy planes.

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/vtol5.jpg

However, you gotta be really careful at step 3 and 5. If you don't stop with your VTOL engine at step 3, your plane will just slide backwards and eventually blow up. Magic fairy engineers can only do so much. Similarily at step 5, if you're too straight while still on the runway, you'll start to fall backwards and your take off will be the other way round, causing massive damage.

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/wrong1.jpg

Pretty soon you'll be on fire (the bad way. not the good way) and your plane goes bye-bye.

https://www.totalirrelevance.zeeblo.com/otherfiles/BF2/wrong2.jpg

And that's how you do a real VTO.

Good luck.

I'm not positive, but I don't think that was the intentions of the designers when they rolled the F-35 out...

Yeah sure, great work, but I wonder how many of those who read this guide are gonna do that in a full 64 player server.

you can also on any f-35 position just hold the up arrow so when you put thrust on you jsut to a rocket launch

I discovered this back in the days when only the Demo exsisted, never thought to mention it. All the plane campers would go "awesome, how'd ya do that" but I never gave the secrets, not that it's hard though.

Anyway nice guide and great pictures.

some guy was doing that one day in our server...he kept stealing the jets from me even tho im jumping up and down spamming "negativenegativenegative" as he runs up to me...the thing is tho he sucked balls at flying the plane regardless of his "leet" take off...he said stuff like..."did you like that Cpt Buck?" and "watch this" but after he took off he would crash into a mountain or something w/o getting a kill...i told him he had 3 options ... get a kill, dont take the jet again, or get kicked... so he goes, gets a kill, crashes and then comes back to have the nerve to take the jet again...

i then told him "when i said get KICKED...I didnt mean a vote kick asshat" and promptly booted him...thats not admin abuse is it?

I've done it a few times in servers, and then i see other people do it and they normally fuck up and end up going backwards upside down and crash or burn up.

I can actually do a take off like that without using hover at all. This is how i do it...

1.When you get into the plane, instantly raise the nose UP as high as you can.
2.Press down W and pull the nose DOWN so the plane is on its nose.
3.When you hear the sound that the plane is gonna get moving soon, raise the nose UP and hit the afterburner also. This should result in a near vertical take off.

There is off course the risk that you raise too much and end doing an attempted back-flip which ends in water but hey, no need for hover or driving forward.

I just hit full throttle and full after burner and point noise up at once works fine for me

Especially considering the F-35 is a STOVL, not a VTOL aircraft...  you're supposed to use the runway (and an LHD deck may not be long enough, but I don't know...  that's the purpose of the LHARs in development, about an extra 60-80 or something feet of deck length, wider too, designed for using the F-35's and MV-22 Ospreys).

I hover and make the nose go up so im vertical and push accelerate and use afterburners.  Sometimes you hit the carrier, but that's what the magic fairy engineers are for

Three days ago I´ve seen an Italian guy who performed a VTO and then hovered around like that for some time. Looked just as if he was trying to hook his front gear to the landing deck.

Hot jesus! I think I'd throw an anti-tank near you just for doing that in game because I'd be so impressed! I cant even land a jet in the dang game...that has to do with my gimp of a joystick though, so my plane flying days were numbered before they started hehe

am i the only one that gets in the plane on the side of the essex, and then just hit foward, and onces the jet starts moving, i hit burn, and i just take right off the side, no roll?

and the F-35 is capable of VTOL. so is the Harrier. however, the fuel consumption isnt worth it, so realisticly most flight profiles start with VTOL, probably a roll of about 30-40m?

and await my return to the fighters. i shall reign supreme once again!

If you want to be really cool, you can hover the plane in the vertical position if you keep the throttle right. Its a little tricky using mouse + kbd but still possible, just not quite as smooth as you have to keep tapping the throttle key. Looks even better if you "barrel roll" it while hovering vertically, and oddly enough the barrel rolling process makes it easier as it stops you from vearing off to one side if you keep it spinning =]

I didnt come up with that idea tho, just figured I'd try it after watching this: http://files.filefront.com/UpSideDown_p … einfo.html

i am not very familiar with the F-35, but Harriers don't need to go through that awesome, yet ridiculous procedure. "Vertical Takeoff and Landing" doesn't quite literally have to mean pointing your nose to the sky and going into an upside-down flying position. the Harriers take off horizontally and then start to point thrusters into flying position and then go into normal jet operation. i agree with the whole ridiculous consumption of that procedure i witnessed above. Ospreys are the same, since they are essentially Heli+Plane hybrids.

now, landing a Harrier, you can do a vertical landing because it has the capability, but it is much easier to land like a normal jet and taxi. having to go into a hover mode at high speeds and then landing is a bit cumbersome...plus it could disrupt air traffic, depending on the situation.

but hell, this is a game! make that SOB do a VTO and make it look good!

Well... Harriers *can* take off vertically, but you'll likely only ever see it at an airshow.  It's an incredible waste of fuel, and probably can't be done with a full load of fuel and munitions.  Of course, in any "vertical takeoff" the aircraft is still flat and level...  but Normal operation of any STOVL (F-35B), or V/STOL (AV-8B) is to take off horizontally...   get a good roll going, and use some of the lifting power to get you off the ground sooner, so you can use a short runway, or like the Marines use an amphibious assault ship (USS Essex), or like the Brits, not have to build a big aircraft carrier for your naval aviation like we yanks do.  Of course... in many cases "vertical landing" isn't completely vertical either...  it only looks that way when you're standing on the deck and moving at 20kts or better into the wind too.

Like the AV-8B the F-35B can probably take off vertically, with less than a full load, and again, it's likely something you'll only ever see at air shows.  Then of course... only the Marine version ("B" variant) will be capable of it anyhow...  the other branches aren't going to waste all that space and weight on the lift fan and the swivel duct in the tail.  The funny part is that the Navy version F-35C is the most expensive of the three variants, and isn't STOVL.  You have to do a lot of work to a craft to make it good enough to fly in the US Navy.

Of course... all the proceedures here would get you killed if you were an F-35B pilot (or on the deck crew of the Essex, which may never have F-35B's on its deck anyhow), and is just a game trick.   Another note on the F-35... I don't think I've ever seen the fan doors open in the game... which is absolutely necessary for STOVL...   without the fan, basically the tail would lift up until something fairly catastrophic happened, lol.

The MV-22 Osprey is a whole new class, "Tilt Rotor".  Also, as far as I know it cannot take off horizontally... considering the size of the rotors, it would have to have landing gear long enough that you'd be calling it the Flamingo instead of the Osprey, lol.

And of course... all that talk about longer gear reminds me of the development history of one of my all-time favorite aircraft, Vaught's F4U Corsair.  Basically, they put a demon beast of an engine in it, then realized they didn't have enough prop to really use the horse power, so put a bigger prop on it.  That meant they had to lengthen the main gear (in the wings) so the prop would clear the ground, but they couldn't make landing gear that long strong enough for carrier landings... so the designers decided to use the old gear, and have the wings come down out of the fuselage, and bend out level (so the wings were lower than they could have been if coming straight out of the fuselage... so the fuselage sat higher when it was on the ground, and the prop could clear).  All of this was done by accident, but produced superior airodynamics (reduced drag at the intersection of the wing and the fuselage), and one of the most beautiful prop fighters ever built.

Hmm, the Corsair is a beauty, but I have always been partial to the Spitfire. RJ Mitchell was on the money when he designed the wings
