Hey all,

I have a quick question for you.

At present my rig is as follows:

P4 3.4Ghz (650)
2Gb DDR PC3200 RAM
Asus P5S800-VM mobo (sux)
ATI Radeon 9550 LE (256Mb)
HDD are 7200rpm Seagate jobbies.

BF2 plays, but everything on low and I feel I'm missing out.

Basically my question to you is this, if this was your rig, what would you do to improve performance. Would you exchange some stuff? Buy a new mobo and GPU?

In a nutshell, would you salvage some parts from this system to build a new one or would you just wait (gotta save up the disposable income) and buy a new PC in the first quarter of next year.

A tricky one but it seems that you have been a victim (like most of us) of the switch from AGP to PCI-E. The problem is that to get decent graphics throughput you will need to get a newer graphics card and most of the faster cards on the market have moved over to PCI-E due to its greater bus bandwidth.

The problem is that to go for a PCI-E graphics card you will need a PCI-E mobo which will mean new RAM and a faster CPU. Basically the guts of your PC need a major upgrade and if you are going to do all that then you may as well get a whole new rig.

lol my pc is worse but i play on avrything average and the anti ali on X4 and it runss smooth

Having no idea with this sort of thing, I would say graphics card.

I run mine all on high, with an average fps of 60+

A64 3700+
3Gb ram
ATI X1800XT 512.
generic HDD
Creative soundcard.

It does the job until I build a new one Q3 next year. (if she will let me )

well for agp there are some good upgrade's upgrade availeble, nvidea made the 7800gt and the 7800GS in AGP version. It is equal to the 7800gt PCI-E, i think it is worth upgrading it, because you have an excellent processor, 2 gigs of ram, and with the 7800gt you wil be able to play it all maxed out with 4x AA I think.

ATI has some good cards to, don't know wich one's are in AGP

@ FathomsDown, Teamsreth and Terror, thanks for the help and advice guys. I'm not looking for blistering performance, just better than all low so I might just price up a new mobo, GPU and sound card for now and then add to it later, or just replace it and pass the lesser machine on to my son. For what it costs for a decent AGP GPU I think it's cheaper to go with the mobo and GPU in PCI-E though.

Doc a quick fix would be your graphics card.... the ATI X800's are coming down in price and are very capable cards..... if you have a burning desire and a bit of cash

jep they say the x800 is great in overclocking. well I admit i never overclocked anything, but I like to read threads, websites and stuff of people overclocking graphic cards

The other thing is, that whilst I used to be very savvy on computer tech, things have moved rapdily on and left me behind.

I am very tempted just to make do and wait until I have the money to buy a new rig complete (alienware) and have the comfort that should something go drastically wrong with it I haven't got to figure out which bit has fucked up, take it out and return it to the shop.

Any thoughts? Particularly on whether Alienware are worth buying or is it all hype.

if are wanta new pc and stuff then maybe just wait put up with the fact that you have to have settings on low, get more and more and more money saved up and buy/build an UBER computer so UBER even Chuck Norris would be scared of it.

if you just start poking around with it now , just changing little bits now and again you will end up replacing the stuff you just bought after a while, which would waste your hard earned money.
