...and the UN bashing continues...Let's not forget that the US is also a member of the SC and can press for further action. The UN is only as strong as their members make it. It's not a world government, it doesn't muster armed forces.
You either are a member and support them or you don't, but don't be surprised if the UN achieves nothing when it's most prominent members cannot agree to a unified approach to this issue...

A truly cynical viewpoint on the UN is that it was never intended to be effective - rather it was meant to stall any movement on issues one way or another and thus maintain the status quo. Why have so many countries got a veto, if not? I subscribe to its ideals but they are rarely implemented in practice.
The key flaw of UN sanctions is that they rarely effect the intended target - they are the diplomatic equivalent of carpet bombing. Do they really think that by imposing a trade embargo or other such sanctions the governement of Iran is suddenly going to be bereft of their comforts whilst leaving the populace untouched? Equally, in the entire history of economic sanctions what is the success to failure rate? That's a genuine question btw, not a rhetorical one.

All I know is that the world really seems to be heating up right now. The Isreals are going crazy and attacking everyone, and know we're putting more pressure(if getting grounded is pressure) on NK and Iran.

I think it's abit more than that. The US pressing for further action then leads to US bashing, which far exceeds UN bashing on this (or any) forum. When the US decides to roll up their sleeves and take what action they feel is appropriate, they then invite the wagging finger of the international community for not following "proper channels".B.Schuss wrote:

I'm not saying the US should go World Police on their ass, but just pointing out that it is the only alternative really. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Since when? The reason I take a dim view of American actions re: Iran is their history with them, and the fact that they ignore North Korea, which is a far worse human rights abuse than Iraq ever was.
Somehow I see it all ending in a nuclear winter and Australia will be the ones suriving, except for the smart people who go chill with em.
The U.S.needs to leave the broken U.N. & take all their money home as well.
