Many companies use programs to monitor the activity of their employees to make sure they are not wasting company time doing stuff like posting to video game websites. I dont like being watched!

I want to know everything you know about how to tell if your company is doing this and what they are able to see (e.x. sites visited, duration spent at a site). Also, does anyone know how to defeat these surveillance systems or mask your internet usage?

Any information or resources would be appreciated.

Thanks

I work in IT security and can tell you if they are running the tools and systems to track and monitor your activity there is no getting around it unless you have rights over the network.  With different tools come different capabilities.   But watching what you do is not difficult if they really want to see what your up to.  If your worried the only thing I can recommend is lock down your machine, to limit anyone remotely accessing your local system... But tracking your MAC address and IP address around the network and to places that you surf is still going to be possible.  (unless your the guy behind the guy... behind the guy... running the network)

Either get a friend in network admin so that they can give you rights to work around the security or become so valuable to your company that they don't care what you do as long as you keep kicking butt.

That about sums it up for me!    Funny thing is, I got a call from my boss as I was posting something earlier...I'm getting a big fat promotion, YEAH!

Hmm, but how do you know IF you are being watched? Is there anything you could find on your machine or any background program running that could tell you?

I don't have to worry about that now but when I worked at ibm they had monitoring tools that were supposedly only monitoring calls but could have been used in other ways. I'm pretty sure you have the right to know when you're employer is monitoring you anyway. But ya, there's no way around it if it's mandatory, they would be able to see if it was not in use by a particular machine anyway even if you had rights to work around it.

you might get a unexpected message pop up on the screen   at least that's what they do here where i work.  then followed by disiplenary action.  thank goodness the admins here are a bunch of lazy asses, people get away with a lot of shit here but then again they just recently implemented a new procedure that all email excluding work email is blocked.

If I couldnt spend time online at work I'd shoot myself. My other thoughts on this subject would be: would the software process show up in task manager? and: this might be a good subject for google if no-one has any other information. Unfortunately I cant answer your question/s.

Task manager = No.

I work for a medium/large sized ISP, and we have tools to do exactly what is described here.  It can be done over the network completely independant of the actual desktop machines.  There is no way you would know until you are escorted to the door (happened when they saw bittorrent traffic comming from one of my coworkers).

I won't go into specifics as to how this is done unless someone really wants me to, but it is not hard to do.  They see traffic comming from your IP on port 80 to bf2s at 67.43.4.47.  They don't recognise that as a business IP, so they type it into their brouser, and BAM! they know what you are doing.

If the site is getting blocked,    go to   www.megaproxy.com   although you only have 30 seconds to punch in as many blocked websites as you want per day.

If you have windows XP pro, and your task manager is disabled... but you have a run command in the start menu... go to start.... run... type "tasklist"
same feature as taskmanager with out the GUI. its the tool I use at work when I telnet throughtout the building checking on what the students and teachers are doing. I also have sniffer programs set up for IDS(Intrusion Detection System), but most of the blocking occurs at the main proxy/firewall at the school board (I'm a net admin at a high school) and my boss doesn't care... I'm looking at his monitor right now and he's looking at his weeks college football scores. .

I'm a network guy too and as other have stated, if your company is doing this they are probably doing it in a way that you will not be able to bypass.  Remote proxies can be used for surfing but those sites are all categorized as being such and would be blocked.  That said, your company can not ethically or legally monitor these things without telling you beforehand that they are doing so.  Your best bet if you are worried about it is to ask a HR rep of your company.

Also, if you get busted using a remote proxy i would guarantee that the consequences of doing that would be far worse then any normal web surfing you may be doing.
