Xfx 7900 Gt

Hello all,

I just bought this GFX card and im kinda a little dissapointed. I have my settings on high and I lag a little. But I think I might need some more Ram or a better processor. I have 1.5 GB's of Ram and a AMD 3000+ processor. Can anybody tell me if they think thats what the problem is??

Umm, that thing doesnt lag on high, at all, and I played on 1GB of RAM at this time. But, it was a hyperthreaded processor, so maybe that was why.

But it sholuld DEFINATELY not lag on high.

Ok then I don't know why. I mean it's not like crazy lag but it is like a little bit choppy. Maybe it could be the server too IDK. But do you think getting a better processor would make it better?

Your CPU (AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.1ghz i am assuming) is bottlenecking your system. That's your problem, not the ram or card.

No, it's a AMD Athlon 64. OK then what about the AMD Athlon 64 3800+, would that be better then buying the RAM?

another gig of ram will do wonders for you, trust me, buy another gig or half gig if you can afford it

I have XFX GeForce 7600gt (factory OC) and I can put everything else on high (but I'm using Medium settings 'cos I get better fps and It looks the same) except texture filtering, I dunno why It starts lagging when I put it on medium or high

Try lowering texture filtering to low and see if it still lags, you may have same problem as I do

I have the XFX 7800GT maxed out and all is well. I think it is something other than the vid card, that vid card is premium. 2GB of RAM is good, but probably doesn't address the choppiness. I would imagine that is more a CPU issue.

Excellent brand choice on the RAM, assuming it is compatible with your system, that is great RAM. Getting two sticks I assume? More RAM will improve loading speed.

The 64 part is important . I'd say go with 2gigs, since that has a better boost in performance than a new(er) CPU. Just make sure to get two 1 gig sticks, or 4 512 sticks so that you are using dual channel to the max. If you need help with getting RAM, PM me or get me on xfire, stuka12.

As far as texture filtering, it's stupid that BF2 has it listed as Low, Medium, High, since it's actually Billinear, trillinear, and anistroptic. Trillinear (medium) usually runs the same as billinear, if not better on some systems.

i have an xfx 7900gt, p4 3.2 (641), 2gb ram.

i usually get about 50-75 fps with everything on high except dynamic lighting and shadows, and yes i still get a bit of lag. if you check out the other thread in here somewhere about the 7900 series you will see that they are actually a very unreliable card.

after inital problems mine seems to have stabilised so i haven't rma'd, but yeah, you will still get a bit of lag on high for some reason, even though you shouldn't.

I think everyone agrees that more RAM is better and that is primo RAM, but there still seems to be some dissent as to whether it's the CPU or the RAM. I still say it's the CPU.

QFT. What socket is your CPU? Do you know?

If its a skt939 then I would advise you to get an x2 3800+ and overclock it. There are some massive price drops coming when intel launches core 2 duo chips (conroes), so you can get one nice and cheap. That would be a better upgrade than the RAM.

If you have a skt754 then I would recommend saving your cash and doing a major upgrade in the near future instead. The RAM would be a more viable option if you decide you MUST upgrade something, but keep in mind you won't be able to use it in your next rig.

there are a number of possible issues.
If you want to rule out your GPU then try typing in this console command

renderer.drawFps 1

It will display your frames per second in the top left corner.
If the GPU is the bottle neck it will be below 30. Above this and the GPU is not the issue.

If you want to check your CPU, open task manager,. when you die, alt + tab to task manger and see if the CPU is maxed out.

BF2 uses about 1.5 Gb of memory, the more of that in RAM and the less in pagefile the better.

Meaning two or more IDENTICAL sticks of the same size and type. They sell them in packs of two usually, whether it be 2 1 gig sticks or 2 packs of 2 512's. Corsair XMS ftw. Make sure to get PC3200 if that's what you can run, and not something else. You know what mobo you are running by any chance?

Im not to sure about the processor, i use intel.
But i can play most servers on high settings with no lag, i have a 6600GT and P4 3.0ghz and 2gb ram.
On the odd server i had massive lag. So if its on every server im not sure whats going on, ask the amd people, but if its on the certain few servers then its the servers problem and not a problem on your end.

i bought ocz gold pc4000 2gb 2x1gb ddr500 ram and a amd 3700 and it kicks ass i can play with a ping of 150 plus and no problems but it is a bit of cash though but it is pimpin
