I am not trying to dump on New Jersey (much), but when someone says "But raising the 6% sales tax to 7% isn't horrible is it? It's one more cent to the dollar for what you bought", that's scary. Raising taxes is not a good answer to solving fiscal problems. Once taxes go up, they will never, ever come back down.
Lets suppose cpt.fass1 decides to get an XBOX 360 (for whatever reason). Current market price is roughly $400. At 6% sales tax, your total is $424. If the sales tax is raised to 7%, you total becomes $428. The increase may only be $4, but this increased tax affects every purchase in the state, from a cup of coffee to automobile sales.
The answer to the question: "But raising the 6% sales tax to 7% isn't horrible is it?" is absolutely "Yes, it is horrible". The question the people of New Jersey should be asking is: "Exactly how will the revenue from a 1% sales tax increase (among other tax increases) be used to run the state and fix the problems?"
