Hi there, I'm not very techy and I need some help with new hardware

I want to jump to 2GB RAM, just wondering how to do it. I've got an Asus SLI board A8N deluxe or something, with 2 Geil DDR400 PC4000 512 chips in it.

Now, does that mean I have to get DDR400 PC4000 512 to run along side it? Or can I fit DDR500 PC4000 512, which is much more easy to buy (I can't find DDR400 PC4000 512 to buy anywhere!?!?).

I'm guessing if I do fit the 500, it will run at 400, but I don't really give a shit about that. What I'm worried about is buying 500 and finding out that ACTUALLY, I have to use 400 or the fkin thing won't work or whatever.

Pliz help me. Ta.

no such thing as PC4000 DDR400 PC400 is DDR3200. Corsair makes top notch RAM, as does OCZ

err i wouldnt put 4 sticks since it will lag ur pc... (blame amd, i assume u have socket 939)

i would just get 2 X 1 gb ddr400

Seiously? 4 sticks will lag the PC? It would be 4 x 512MB

If I did go for 2 x 1GB what should I buy with that board, and how much?

I want top notch; but I'm guessing it's going to cost a fkin fortune.

crucial.com has a scanner to tell you exactly what MB you have, what memory is in it, and what it will support. Run that to verify what type of memory you have and will need.

They will give you a list of memory too they wanna sell you. But if you find some memory CAS latency 2 ram that will be good.

with 2 x 512 sticks, it may be advisable to go ahead and just buy 2 1 gig sticks so your ram will be able to run faster. With 2 x 512 and 1 x 1028 you wont be able to run optimally, this may apply to running 4x 512, but i am not sure (someone please verify or correct me)

in order to give you the help you need....it would be helpful if you post your system specs.
ie...cpu(and what core it is) exact mb model...and i need to know the ram u are using(what u posted doesnt exist as far as i know)

OP:

Many memory manufacturers have an online system that allows you to input your motherboard brand and model to search for compatible memory.

Your options are to either:

1. Put in another identical pair of 512 sticks, provided you have 4 DIMM slots total. You can use mixed memory, but it isn't recommended. This will lower your command rate, if it is currently optimized and you are running dual channel memory. Another disadvantage is the heat buildup generated by so many modules in close proximity with eachother.
2. Remove the pair of 512 sticks and put in a pair of 1GB sticks, which will cost you around $150-$200. This is the optimal choice.

I am running two different pairs of Corsair 512MB's, for a total of 2GB of memory. I have no doubt that I would run faster with 2x1GB, but I had the extra pair lying in a desk drawer. Let's see...$0 or $150? Tough choice. The higher timings resultant from doing this only set me back a few points in 3DMark, but are much more noticable in games. However, I got the effect I was looking for, which was to eliminate initial map load lag for Battlefield 2. I've compensated by dropping some of the more resource-intensive detail a bit.

Nice one guys - thanks for the advice. I plumped for the 2GB in 2 x 1GB stick option, as it was far less expensive than I though...

I got these ones (on a friends recommendation)

u underclock the memory... but when u overclock u can set ur mem to higher speeds safer

it is, but run 2 X1gb not 4X 512mb, since if u run 4 sticks on an AMD mobo, it will lag ur ram

My full spec is

Asus A8n sli deluxe
6600GT (soon to be running SLI)
1 GB DDR
AMD 3200+

Bout it. Should be good enough for some serious BF2 anyway.

Anyone running or ever ran 6600GTs in SLI? I'm hoping for a decent boost with later drivers.

do not run 6600gt's in SLI, unless u run uber high res, just buy a good 7900gt or 7600gt if ur on budget

Def on a budget. Got a second 6600GT for just £50 (about 75$) so it's not a biggie.

Mushkin is a maker of some very high performance modules. Every bit as good as Corsair.

Mushkin is a maker of some very high performance modules. Every bit as good as Corsair.

mushkin is VERY good, its mostly known to enthusiests who go on tech websites everyday.

Actually Mushkin has been around for along time...and makes some great Ram...you cant get much more reliable then Mushkin

This is only partially true.

The memory controller on some AMD 64 chips have "issues" with using all for DIMM's. It will underclock the memory to 166MHz, and if you try to run at 200MHz it won't POST. To fix this, you have to set the RAM command rate from 1T, to 2T. This makes it slower, but not by a noticeable amount.

It's at 250MHz, so it will be perfectly happy for a .5GHz OC, and I've heard of people OC'ing it to around 280MHz at 2.7 - 2.8V with pretty nice timings.

i think having 4x512 wont affect lag it will reduce it. I have 2x512 and 2x1024 i havent lagged since i got the two gig sticks i bought my memory at comp usa they seem to work fine with what i use them for.

It is only an issue with AMD 64-bit chips, and I want to say only those that have a Venice core..but I'm not entirely sure.

2x1GB is indeed better than 4x512mb. This is because dual-channel communicates better and faster, and because it runs at correct speeds. Plus, dual-channel has to come in the same batch..they have to be made for eachother. Having two sets of RAM run in dual-channel isn't likely to happen.
