I would think it wouldn't be due to background applications unless he has something running every twenty minutes.

Poor ventilation and backround prosses can both be giving you prolems. Also you might want to upgrade to 2GB's of RAM and that will also help out alot.

Is it jus choppy video or everything?  If you restart and don't shutdown, does the problem go away.  If it is heat related the problem should persist after a warm restart.  Does it only go haywire during BF2.  It may just be the video card getting two hot.  Does it clear up once you close the game.  More info, I need more!!!!!!!!!!!!

check if your processor is throtteling due to heat (there is a program out there that will tell you so, but i dont remeber it's name). That would defenetely lead to lag

EDIT: here we go: choose throttlewatch http://www.panopsys.com/Downloads.html

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

What are your video settings at?  Try lowering them temporarily for a test to see if the card is just getting beat up.

Could it be the paging file resizing?

Norton 2004 can't be turned on once it's off and then Windows keeps giving you stupid security messages.  Of course none of you probably even still use 2004 so......
