I was going to buy a computer off of newegg but my mom found out that her company can get 50% off on Dell computers. So I was wondering with a 7200rpm hard drive a 3.6ghz processor and 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM would I be able to play BF2 maxed out with a 256mb 6800 video card with no lag except at the beggining of a map once I load it. Because I was thinking of waiting until after DX10 comes out to upgrade and just wanted a cheap card until then. If not I can get a 7900GT but I was hoping to save money and wait for DX10 and then get the best out there.
As long as you have a decent isp you'll be able to play maxed out. Thats a little bit better than what I'm playing on now with all settings as high as they go.Capt. Foley wrote:

Ok, good. Then Ill get that for now.
Well true, make sense. When is DX10 coming out?
DX10 software will be out with vista (2007) not sure about the cards.
i guess that would be the same time about, maybe 1 month earlyer.Janus67 wrote:

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
When people say, "Yeah, sure, you can run everything maxed out, I do!" is there any chance of adding in what kind of frame rate you're getting.
I can max mine out... I can't play the game anymore, but it looks pretty!
Little more info please if you guys don't mind.
Cheers,
Doc

I turned all settings to high once on my GeForce 5200. It ran, but I got around 1 fps. Essentially unplayable but I managed to kill someone (single player).
Still looked pretty.
Yea, witht that systeme I have above what frame rates would I be getting maxed out.
20-30fps
i have dual 7900gt's in sli (bfg tech) i get maxed fps at 100 when just messing around but when the action starts it pretty much locked at 60-70
Asus A8N SLi
amd64 3500+
7900gt X2 SLi
2 gigs corsiar value select
160 WD HDD
SB Fatality

Would that be givng lag at all. I dont know what good framerates are.
well the game is pretty much smooth from 20-100 fps.. you should be fine. the 20-30 i quoted would be at like heavy action times like the alleys of karkand. If your in an empty server or something you will most likely get more.

If you buy a Dell with a 6800, you won't be able to upgrade to a 7900 GT without getting a whole new PC. They'll give you a AGP motherboard and the 7900 GT is PCI-E. And since Dell uses custom shaped motherboards, PSUs, etc. you'll have to get a whole new PC.
I had the same problem back when I tried to get rid of the GeForce 4 in my old Dell and upgrade to a 9800 Pro. The PSU wasn't powerful enough and you can't just swap in a better one.
Oh, and let me point out that the deal you're getting is 50% off a Dell system. 50% off an expensive item may not be that much better of a deal than building your own (which I suggest). You'll be happy if you do anyway as it'll make life 100x easier when you go to upgrade.
If you have it and don't believe me, do Start -> Run -> dxdiag.

DX10 is already out. It comes bundled with the Vista Beta.Janus67 wrote:

I had a system that I was going to build myself and my mom said ok but once she found out that she could get up to 50% off if we bought it with Dell. Would I be able to upgrade to DX10 with a Dell with these specs
Pentium D 2.6ghz
Nvidia GeForce 7900GT 256mb.
XFI sound card
2 GB of DDR2 RAM
????
It is a XPS 600 that I have customized.

I never recall a XPS 600 going with a Pentium D at 2.6 GHZ...
DX 10 might now be able to support the 7900GT for now, but everything else should be in order w/ Vista when it comes out. You know, for 50% off, why go look at a XPS 700??? Has a better and cooler looking case and the parts are slightly better than the 600.

What he said. Dell foist weird customised parts off onto you so that when you need to upgrade, you can't. But not always, check with them before buying anything.Viper007Bond wrote:

Alright, I guess a XPS 700 dose make sense. And if the 7900GT can probably support DX10 Ill just go full out and get the best I can.
I thought the 7900GT had some sort of stability problems that made it die early or something. That would mean it wouldn't even last you til DX10.
Well it may have been true when you bought the PC with the GeForce 4. But current gen Dells are NOT proprietary. Not the PSUs, mobos, RAM. I have worked IT with a slew of Optiplex and Dimension desktops and have replaced many a parts. Not once did I run into problems (except for a mere Power switch layout that was quickly fixed.)Viper007Bond wrote:

The use OEM parts, so the HDD model name might be 192934Z or something of that nature, but proprietary, No.

no no u got it wrong... it has an early shut down bug after overclock... i used to hit around 570 core but had to drop the oc to 535 core or it will crash pc after an hour of gaming._j5689_ wrote:

there are no direct X 10 cards out... the 7 series is vista compatible, doesnt mean its DX10 ready
Oh, so they went to standard ATX? Cool.Snipedya14 wrote:

Yeah, my dad's Dell and my old Dell both have small motherboards and a small PSU. Neither are replaceable with standard ATX components.
Good to hear they finally went to standard shapes.
What about a 7950gtx 1GB? I can get that for a extra 200$. And do any of these cards support DX10 and what is the 7950 s rep. Am I going to have problems with it.
currently no card supports (at least officially) dx10. They might run it, but they wont have all of the required features.
