BF2S Forums britians future

For the people who don't know the current situation in the UK, I shall attempt to sum it up in a couple of paragraphs.

At present, Scotland and Wales both have devolved governments - the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales.  Northern Ireland (part of the UK but not part of Great Britain) also has its own devolved government but until the two Christian movements (Catholics and Protestants) can sit down and work together, it has been dissolved.  England does not have a devolved government.  These each have limited powers.

In addition to the devolved governments, there is the UK Parliament, which has two bodies - the House of Commons and the House of Lords.  The Commons comprises 646 members elected from across the UK.  The Lords comprises approximately 500 life peers (people who the current and previous governments have given seats to), 92 hereditary peers and 26 members of the clergy.  The UK Parliament makes some laws for the entire UK but where the devolved governments have power, the UK Parliament may only make law for England (I think).

In sport, things are more confused.  In athletics, there's a UK team that calls itself Great Britain (it does include NI people) where in football, each country has its own team.  Motorsport has no national teams but most Britons elect to have the Union Flag as their country emblem though Eddie Irvine took exception to this (being from Northern Ireland).

As far as I know, Wales has not been seeking independence from the rest of the UK.

well, maybe they don't care wether they are a major power in the world and prefer to be independent...

Various ethnic minorities in countries all over the world seek independence from said countries, nations are getting smaller and smaller. Wasn't there even a move in the US a while back to make Texas an independent nation ?

The situation here in Northern Ireland is complicated to say the least. Half the population whats one thing and half the other. I belong to the half that wants a United Island of Ireland. Its not about being British or being a supper power, I don't care for the UK's medaling in world affairs to keep in with the USA. I sat on the fence quite abit up until the war on Iraqi. I was a Quite Republican, waiting for the time when I can cast my vote on a referendum on a united Ireland which should happen within my lifetime. Now I am much more vocal. Manly because I don't want to be associated with an unjust war. Sry if I seam to keep harping on about it.

Basically I don't think Britain is a supper power anymore. It should give up on this big race and concentrate more on internal issues. Britain used to have a massive empire to draw resources and capitol from, then when the Commonwealth collapsed, she had the north sea oil and gas to drive her along. Now as the North Sea reserves dry up and our taxes continually go up, its the people who end up paying. We are already the most over worked taxed nation in Europe putting in the most hours. We are taxed on everything. Why? To keep Britain a supper power. Why I ask, what good does it do Britain? Isn't the cold war over? We maintain a massive army, navy and air force in comparison to the population and landmass at the expense of us the hard working public. Personally I hate the fact that I have to work 55-65 hour weeks to maintain a relatively comfortable lifestyle for my wife and kids who I get to see for 1-2 hours a night to fund the British army on its globe trotting American ass kissing missions.
Also the British government would love to get rid of Northern Ireland, they tried to when Major was in government as we are nothing but a pain in the ass to them, but they feared a Bosnia type civil war sparking off.

I'd love to see the back of scotland, to me all they do is get there own parliment to sponge off our government, moan about it and then tell people how much they hate us English. (even to the extent of boycotting Asda (walmart) stores until they stopped selling England world cup merchandise, I mean how childish and jealous is that?)

Wales I don't mind so much, I mean I know were also not there biggest fans but in all honesty I havn't met a rude welsh person.

I Don't even understand why we have Northern Ireland, not that I have a problem with them I just don't see why we can't just give it back to the Irish and be done with it. Plus it's a nice place 2 visit (well most areas anyway).

So to sum up. Wales = Don't mind
                     N I = Don't mind
                     Scotland = Fuck off on you're own and then see how you do!

Well if England was taken over and ruled by murderous raping Scots, I'd bet you'd have a hard spot in your heart for them even centuaries after. Point being, the Scots have ALWAYS been a sepereate entity from England, now its just official.

Couldn't agree more.  The Scots are a bunch of sponging gits.



And yeah!  Why does the UK "have Northern Ireland"?  What does it all have to do with England?!  I don't know mate, but I live 6,000 miles away and the queen's head is on all our coinage, so there's definitely something funny going on...

It's a mystery, and you're right -- no amount of removing heads from between buttocks is going to solve it.  Everybody should just get behind Sven and our boys and STFU about anything that happened before 1966.

before ~1290 AD - Scotland and England were independent.
1290 - 1306 - King of England usurped power in Scotland.
1306 ~ 1707  - Scotland's rule back at the hands of the King of Scotland.
1707 - After threats from England, Both Kingdoms united to for Kingdom of Britain

Seems like the tradition is to go back and forth. Perhaps now is the time for another change?

As for the Britain splitting up...Letting NI go would be logical. It's just like Georgia, with their fucked up ass-kissing president holding South Osetia from joining North Osetia, which is a part of Russia. Those two states have always been together. In fact, 95% on South Osetia citizens now have russian passports.

Who'd take NI, theres not many intelligent people in the South who want it and Id imagine a lot more people fell the same in the North than Sinn Fein would have you believe! It could'nt survive on its own anyway. (Security costs id imagine are enormas!)
