How does the Pentium D 940 (2*3.2 GHZ) compare with the 3800+ in BF2? If 3800+ is faster, will the DDR2 ram make up the difference?
been told by a few that the pentium owns the AMD no matter what...
just what i heard
just what i heard
I saw some benchmarks that said the 3800+ beat the 930. Still wondering about the 940 though
Celeron gets owned by everything else, lol. Unless they're really high in GHz to make up for how slow they are.
Unless you are playing in low resolutions with no eye candy (lighting/shadows, AA/AF, max view distance, etc.) then the video card is the bigger bottleneck. As far as owning a dual core AMD, not even close. The two chips you specified would be more than sufficient, and outside of gaming each has its own strong points where it beats the other.
Given that, the Intel advantage belongs to being able to use Intel chipsets.
The AMD advantage is that its dual core technology is superior to that of the D8xx/D9xx series chips, and runs quite a fair amount cooler.
So, pick your poison.

The Pentium has heat problems, avoid till the next generation.
My god is there a lot of misinformmernt here!!!
The AMD proc. owns the Intel unit out of the box.
But the P4 would overclock more (that's when the heat comes into effect).
That P4 has 2 generations of CPU since it by the way.

Excuse me!? What I said is true. The video card becomes more relevant at the settings most people play at. The P4 has its strong points, as does the AMD, but ultimately the video card is where the difference will be...and I mentioned the heat problems of the P4.BigglesPiP wrote:

Intels have low L1 cache which is bad. Amds have high L1 cache which is good.
AMD is faster. Not even the DDR2 can make up for it.

well lets say this my friend -r3-anubis has an intel pentium D processor w/ 1.5gigs of ddr2 ram and a 7800gtx and i have a 3000+ amd 2gigs dual channel ram and a 6600gt and where neck to neck on performance
the only bad thing about amd is the price but they will be going down dramatically in 2days i think its because of windows vista os

I heard that the conroe is going to completly waste amd.
I've never really tryed amd, i just stick with intel.
Never had a problem with them, so why change.

Because you buy what's best at the time for your money, and until Conroe, AMD pretty well put a face slapping on anything Intel had to offer.gburndred wrote:

but intel has double or in sum cases quadriple the L2 cache, which is better.-r3-anubis wrote:

i would say 3800+ X2 would be better. but dont buy any of them now, wait till conroe
AMD dosen't have a large l2 cache because they don't need it. there is little performance differences between the 512k and 1mb k8 AMD's. that's why even the newer semprons hold thier own compared to celery'scyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

and ppl say that conroe is fast coz it has 4mb cache a 4ghz celeron w/ 256k cache is around the same performance as a P4 3.0ghz w/ 1mb cachcejaymz9350 wrote:

L1 cache is the important thing, the more the better and faster.jaymz9350 wrote:

BTW, i will be getting a Radeon X1900 XTX with 512 mb ram. Will this make up for not getting a high end CPU?
Intel kicks AMD's ass when conroe arrives...=TFF=Omen_NataS wrote:

to connor36: yeah it will make a difference
well you heard wrong lol... anyways i have a 4200+ Dual core with a 2000Mhz FSB and im sure that 3800+ your talking about is dual core anyways i have 2 gigs of ram in my computer and it runs like a breeze only thing is i cant play AF that sucks but other then that yeah it OWNS!scottomus0 wrote:

YEA but i'm going to have to sell one of my livers on E-bay to afford the dang thing I'll stick To AMD for nowcyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

Yeah, if you don't have a good processor, it won't live up to the card and the graphics won't be as good as they should be.-r3-anubis wrote:

But finding a budget board for the Conroe isnt so easy.cyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

And BTW-People are not raving over the conroe because of the 4mb L2 cache. (I dont know where you got that from) There are alot bigger improvements that conroe brings to the table.
