Truth be known there are actually very few companies that manufacture their own Notebooks, I mean hell Dell doesn't even do their own Notebook Manufacturing. Fujitsu, Lenovo, Asus are some names that do their own manufacturing for what they sell. Alienware, Voodoo PC, Falcon NW, Hypersonic mostly all models made by Clevo (mostly sold as Sager through PC Torque). Dell, Sony, Toshiba, HP, Compaq almost all models either manufactured by Quanta, ASUS, Chembook, FIC, Twinhead, Compal or about a hundred others.
I have been involved in the white box / VAR computer industry for over 10 years and I tell you that these days in a given price range most notebook computers are going to be "relatively" equal you just have to decide if company A gives a better warranty or accessories and options at a similar cost to Company B. Personal Favorites are Clevo/Sager (usually DTR notebooks) and ASUS, but I have to be honest that some of the Newer HP Pavilion DV Line are pretty sweet (ODM by Quanta) but they are on the large side.
The Asus A6V is pretty bitchin, lightish (6Lbs), sexy yet understated styling, WXGA 15.4 screen, Radeon X700 and pretty good battery life (+-3 hrs on max batt). comes home at around $1100 after rebates...

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2628If you are looking for SUPER mobile.. you are going to have to give up a lot of features and power while keeping the price somewhere reasonable. FIRSTLY stay as far away from the super tiny Sony Vaio's while great notebooks they are SUPER overpriced. A good alternative would be the Toshiba R205 at 2.9 Lbs its not going to be a powerhouse and you would need to pick up an external USB dvd drive but damn it is light and very transportable. around $1250

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AM … p;n=541966a little heavier than the Toshiba, but much better specs and it even comes with a dvd drive heh, the Fujitsu lifebook S2110. it weighs in at around 3.9 Lbs, packs an AMD Turion Mobile 64 Bit Processor hooked up to the ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M chipset, 13.3" XGA Fujitsu Crystal View screen (which kick ass BTW wife has this exact model). I would definitely add some more memory though as it is only configured with 512 out the door. I have personally sold HUNDREDS of Fujitsu Notebooks to lots of people especially Realtors who seem to love them. I have to say that they guy posting before me must have gotten a bad machine or something, possibly he bought a BestBuy Special that was not treated too well before being sold (happens a lot there) but I have a Fujitsu Lifebook that I bought in 1999 and it still runs good to this day. Of all the Hundreds of Lifebooks I have sold I can count on one hand how many I have heard of going bad at all. - $1075 or so

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2569if you are looking for something a little more powerful with more features, and you can stretch your budget a slight I would look hard at the Sager NP5750, remember this is made by Clevo who makes Alienware, Voodoo PC and Falcon NW Notebooks. Given the price it is a pretty kick ass package with a 17" WXGA screen, Radeon Mobility X1600. I have its BIG brother the 5720 that comes with the Geforce go 7800GTX and HS it is fast.. runs SUPER hot.. and the battery life sucks.. weighs about a ton...but DAMN its fast.. lol- starts around $1375 or so give it a week and PCtorque will have it about $100 cheaper and you can order from them without Windows if you want

http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/note … ;SubType=CHonestly there are SO many options, given your price range and requirements I would first of all go to a reputable reseller ("B"ig"B"lue does not come to mind) and get the most you can with realistic expectations for you hard earned dollar.
Oh Yeah.. if Mac OS is your thing thats cool too.. I would never get one.. but to each their own ya... I like being able to use any piece of software I want on a wintel machine thats it. I have yet to see many good games on MAC OS.. I didnt say any.. I said many.. so dont start flaming, I game and MAC is not the best platform for me.
AG
EDIT because I forgot to mention that my laptop weighs a TON.. but I love it and that I am not fond of MACS
