Wheter or not you think that this topic is serious enough to be posted is left to you. If you have criticism, PM me.

I think that modern radio and pop music is worse than it has ever been. Media is plagued by male voices, who's puberty never came, and female voices, who's only practice it is to sing infront of the mirror, along with Britney Spears' music.
Isn't anyone going to stand up to this crap? Are we all going to let this horrible plague sweep the world?
There was a time, where music had variety. This time must have gone: When I switch the radio station, I don't switch the style, or even the artist. I just seem to change the part of the same song I'm listening to. It would seem like rock had completely dissapeared, exceptions are only alternative rock like Coldplay.
But hey, this is only my opinion, let's hear yours!

[So no one asks later: I listen to rock and a bit of trance]

No where is this more evident than Macon motherfucking Georgia. This town has a rich musical heritage, Otis Redding, Little Richard, James Brown, the Allman brothers, Capricorn records, if they weren't born here they got their break here. Hell the building I live in was originally a hotel in the 20's and the likes of Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington stayed here. Even the fucking kazoo was invented here in 1840, the kazoo!! Genius!! But all musical evolution stopped in the 70's, once in a while we get a punk/rock resurgence, but lack of support by the venue owners ensure this doesn't last. They only hire hippy jam bands that sound just like pink floyd and the allmans, nothing original. Right now we got this rockabilly thing and I hope it lasts. Our radio is the exact same way, someone new to town asked me what radio station was good and I told her the only way to find good music around here is to turn the radio off. Nothing but classic rock, overproduced pop, pointless rap. Now don't get me wrong, you'll find everthing in my CD collection from Johnny Cash, to STP, to The Roots. I don't hate any particular style of music, they all have their place, but what reaches the airwaves is boiled down to lowest common denominator drivel. Nothing original and groundbreaking has hit radio since the 90's talent explosion. Cumulus and Clear Channel just want stations that play something everyone can kinda like, instead of specializing a couple of different stations to cater to each genre and play music that people will really love. Plus 1 for starting this.

Thanks for the karma kr@cker...
I really appreciate that I finally found someone that agrees with me... It seems to me that I live in a brainwashed, singleminded and materialistic world sometimes: everyone listens to the same music, wears the same clothes, has the same ideas about life...
Where the hell has our individuality gone? Did those big mean industrial guys swallow it? Because that's what it seems like!

I'll let you in on a dirty lil industry secret, (I used to work in radio) there are these things called "hit discs". they come out usually around twice a week. They are cd's with about 20-ish songs on them. Tracks 1-5 will be pop drivel, 6-10 will be what radio calls "urban", 10-15 will be country and so on. So if you own a couple of different genre stations, you just subscribe to this and wait for them to come in the mail. No need to hire a "music director" (this is the position I worked in, finding new bands, contacting individual record reps and such), you just let the officials at ARCA send the songs in for you. How does a band get on a hit disc? Usually through serious ass kissing, and promotions by your record rep, and that means that geffen, sony, and such usually squeeze out the smaller groups. The only reason these guys like eminem and 50 cent stay on top is because their record company floods the airwaves with their songs and make sure the groups that made their name based on their talent like say Jurassic 5 or Beck(as opposed to controversy like eminem, there is no such thing as bad publicity) can't get their foot in the door. This is how crap like P. Diddy get on twice an hour while legitimate artists like Chris Cornell is only heard a few times a day. This (the hit discs) is what the conglomerates do instead of hiring an MD to tailor each station for the area. When there are independents that stick to their guns, like wnnx in Atlanta (great station, recommend listening to them on the webcast), clear channel is rendered impotent because the local listeners can identify with them as opposed to a station that has the exact same watered down playlist used in every major city in the US.

I think it's time for NOFX lyrics.

I want conflict! I want dissent!
I want the scene to represent...
Our hatred of authority,
our fight against complacency
stop singing songs about girls and love!
You killed the owl! You freed the dove!
confrontation and politics...
Replaced with harmonies and shticks
When did punk rock become so tame?
These fucking bands all sound the same
We want our fights we want our thugs!
We want our burns we want our drugs!
where is the violent apathy?!
These fucking records are rated G!

When did punk rock become so safe?!

It's just that my step brother is about 12(maybe a bit older) and he sings along to all those songs, and it seriously annoys the living crap out of me. I can't stand the music, let alone his voice singing all of it!

If the dogs are commercials, then yes. I don't mind hippity hop and crap (rap) having their own stations, who am I to judge and restrict? But when free enterprise comes in between every song, I draw the line. 5 minutes of commercials followed by 7 minutes of songage (rinse and repeat) in unacceptable.

Commercial radio sucks, the same playlist across the board even the stations aimed at the "youth" market generall only put something "new" on if it has been out for 6 months and is considered safe or if it is U2 or some American crack whore pop artist (don't even get me started on "pop a cap in your ass!!!/ bi'ach hoes" hip hop). The worst is that old song that every station has to play at least once a day, here it is Jimmy Barnes either Working Class Man or Khe Sahn... great songs but I don't want hear them every frigging day!!!

Lucky for me I have a ten stacker in the car and can tune out to my stuff at any time, also I live in a country which does spend a bit of money on "arts and culture" so get to listen to tripleJ which is the government funded "youth" radio that is run by people who actually like music beyond selling a few products.

listen here

generally something for anyone who likes music not influenced by 12 - 14 yo girls...

YEP Fully agree with you there dude Radio sucks, well I can only comment on uk radio, I now actually listen to radio 2 IF I have the radio on, and I always considered radio 2 to be old persons radio, but at least there is a good variety of music from 50s up to present. Radio 1 is SHITE dance (boom boom boom give you a headache) or hip hop/urban crap (bling, bling). Considering this station is meant to represent popular music they need a bit more variety. (perhaps that is why they have chris moyles, they know the music is shit so we best have someone funny to listen to inbetween all the crap music).
All this said I do realise that eveyone is entitled to listen to whatever music they like and for an artist to release a record then they can't be shit it's just not my taste in music and I'm moaning about it, so please don't flame me - IT's JUST NOT MY BAG BABY

Lol,
I couldn't agree more! I am currently residing in the UK, and there are just about 3 variations of radiostations:
1. "Charts": Popular hip hop, r'n'b and pop
2. Oldies   : anything between 50's and 90's music...Just songs younger than 10 years!
3. Techno  : explains itself, right?

Are you kidding me, whenever I listen to Radio 1 (especially Jo Whiley) it's mostly "Brit-pop".  I used to it listen everyday where I worked before and I'm not kidding when I say a day didn't go past without Whiley playing Naive by the Kooks .  The Arctic Monkeys dominate the rest of the play list.

I would agree that a 1-2 years ago, dance and hip-hop were all they played but now it must surely be "University Rock" (as my thrash-metal pal calls it).......

The current top station here in bris is Triple M, they boast that they play a mixture of everything, but so far, all the old (10-8 years) songs suck donkey dick, all the new songs are either high voiced black men whining about people that wouldnt screw them because they are <Insert reason here> As well as more bullshit pop

I havent heard system of a down on that station EVER

The other stations are all uni stations, with students so high they dont even know where they live.....

B105 can choke on dick too, the only reason I listen to Triple M is because their breakfast/afternoon shows haul ass
