Well I found someone that offered to buy my X850 XT PE off me so I finally have an excuse to upgrade.  Of course, I want the best card on the morket right now, lol.  I've been looking at all the reviews and benchmarks between these two cards and they both seem to be pretty close in comparison.  SLI and Crossfire are not an option.  I think 2 cards are a waste of money when the nex gen chipset comes out and can beat the last gen in SLI with a single card.  There's not a CPU out today that can keep up with the fastest high-end single card GPUs anyway.  Anyway, sorry for goin OT there for a sec... so does anyone have one of these two cards or tried them both?  I havn't had a prob with my ATI card since I've had it and I really like the driver updates every month that ATI does.  So I just want to hear your guys expirience between these two brands with the latest chipsets.  Thanks in advance!

Edit:  Sorry for deleting all your guys replies, but I needed a poll.  Thanks though for your input!  If you could, just repost what you said in here, please.

What driver issues are people having with ATI cards exactly??  I havn't had any issues with drivers for the last year and a half with my X850 XT PE.. at least major issues that I can remember.  ATI releases new drivers EVERY month for new games and tweaks.  I heard there were plenty of driver issues with the pre-9000 series, but I've never owned that chipset.  So please speak with exirience from the X and X1k series chipsets.

You might want to check out some forums on the 7900gtx. Those cards have some serious issues right now!!!! I know first hand. I just bought one and its got artifacts, tearing, deep freezes, and pretty much any type of problem you can imagine. I just built a new rig and its all good except my 7900 GTX is jacked!!!!

There is a rumour of NVIDIA doing some type of "fix" with the cards. People seem to think its a capacitor problem, but nobody really knows at this point. The speculation seems to be that this is NOT a driver problem, but a major hardware problem.

Also its been said that there won't be a recall or a public announcement known about the fix...instead NVIDIA will let the old cards float around and eventually work themselves out. Companies like EVGA and others are really committed to getting everyone a "fixed" card, but ASUS (which happens to be my card) doesn't seem to know anything about it (at least the tech support guy.)

Read this about the 7900 series!!!! It might make you think twice!!!!!

Thanks for the notice, 908.  What manufacturer is your card from?  I had never heard of that problem yet.  So what are you doing to fix your card?  RMA it and go ATI or just get a replacement?

All of the cards come from the same factory in china. Mine happens to have ASUS stickers on it.  You are more likely to get one that works if its not the overclocked or "superclocked" variety. Thats basically what I went with ASUS is standard speed for a GTX, but evidently GTs, GTXs, pretty much any 7900 series has problems at this point.

As for what I'm going to do, I'm still up in the air about it. I kinda wish I had a eVGA card now because they are doing the most to make sure people get replacements that have the "fix" done to them. ASUS doesn't seem to know or care too much about graphics cards. So if you are taking a risk on 7900s go with eVGA!!!!Also don't get the overclocked cards!!!!

I think what I'm going to do is contact newegg, and try to exchange my ASUS for an eVGA. I want some better support and it sounds like eVGA is the best for that right now. They are doing cross shipping, and even making sure people are getting the fixed cards. Other companies are going to keep shipped the jacked cards until they are all gone I guess.

I believe I am THE most qualified to give advice here.

I have owned TWO 7900GTX's and THREE X1900XTX's.

Problems with the 7900GTX series:

At first they worked flawlessly, however after a couple of days they started exhibiting artifacts ingame. However it deserves to be said the 7900GTX's drivers themselves were flawless and the games played very smoothly.

See http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~mccasey … forebuyer/ for the corrupted ingame images for the first 7900 and see http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~mccasey/2nd7900/ for the second cards images.

Issues with the X1900XTX series.

Annoying driver issues, a lot of X1900XTX owners have reported of issues with the 6.3 and 6.4 Catalyst drivers on the net. On mine the 6.3 drivers if using DVI the display would have a seriously annoying little flicker, it wasn't noticable that much ingame but on sites like bf2s it was very noticable on its colours.
With the 6.4 drivers I got the same issues as well as on driver initialisation I would get a corrupted display on the monitor for a few seconds. (see http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~mccasey/_RW_0130.jpg)

I'm currently using the 6.5 beta catalyst drivers which give a bit of a performance hit over the 6.4 catalysts, however they work flawlessly without any of the issues mentioned above.

Here's the order in which I went, first to the current card I have (all PCI-E);

BFG 512MB GeForce 7900GTX OC -> Sapphire 512MB Radeon X1900XTX -> Powercolor 512MB Radeon X1900XTX -> Gainward Bliss 512MB GeForce 7900GTX -> Sapphire Radeon 512MB X1900XTX.

The reasoning behind going between the X1900XTX's was that maybe I just got a bad card. However the flickering issue is the same on all X1900XTX's on my machine. When I got another Saphhire card I tried the 6.5 beta's and noticed the issues were fixed so I decided to keep it.

X1900 is the only card that can render HDRI with Anti-Aliasing.

Thanks for the heads up on these cards mate. I have one burning question that probably has a reasonable answer...why have you had so many of these cards, especially in the short time that they have been around for? Have you had to replace, do they fry, do you own that many computers or have you SLi'ed / Crossfired these cards to warrant using that many. If it is because the crads are actually "failing" could you please give us a run down on why, I might save myself some dollars on an upgrade that I dont really need, but really want...

Id like to know how the X1900XTX Crossfire is going if you have tried that.

Im thinking about the X1900XTX in the near future, among other things.

Thanks again.

EDIT:

Just read the updated post. Thanks for the further info mate, and good explanation. +1
Cheers

We can also see that as that those cards suck so bad that they were fried everymonth so that u had to buy new ones.

Now my PC is running a SPARKLE CALIBRE P790 (GF 7900 GT, 512 MB)
and its running fine (ultrafine )
With the ATI-card, that ran before, i head a lot of problems.
So i'd prefer NVIDIA.

I'm an ATi guy, so I say X1900XTX.
@EvilMonkeySlayer: You must be a rich guy to afford so many hi-end cards.

I would say Nvidia... I honestly have never owned an Nvidia card, but I just had an ATI Radeon x700 Pro die on me after maybe 8 months in use (wasn't over clocked).

Thanks for all the responses guys!  This is really helping me make a decision.  Still not completely sure which one yet.  I was hopeful ATIs newest flagship card wouldn't be any different than the last gen flagship card, which I have had since it's debut and havn't had any probs with.

EvilMonkeySlayer, did you not try to use any of the other drivers like the omega drivers or the 6.0-6.2?  I'm guessing your motherboard is on the nForce4 chipet (as mine is)?

I'm pretty interested in the AVIVO that ATI has to offer too.  When I get back home from Korea, I plan on getting a nice plasma with 1080P to hook up to my card and stream movies, videos, and whatever else to my TV.  So if you have any expirience with the AVIVO features, please elaborate!  I love having the VIVO on my X850 XT PE and playing all my videos on my TV from my PC.  Also I use it to play my PS2 and stuff on my PC.  So I put all the features of these cards to use.  I use dual monitors also.  So every input/output on this card is used, lol.. and so will my next card also.  Keep the replies coming please!!

I recently built a new system and its got a 1900xtx..it was a no brainer choice and its even cheaper then a 7900gtx too..had it for almost a month now and ive had 0 problems and bf2 doesnt even make the card flinch even at 1600 x 1200 with everything maxed out..as for all those nvidiots dont listen to em and just be sure to buy a good brand like sapphire, his or powercolour

No he RMA most of them... It was all posted in that thread he linked... I highly doubt a person can afford 5 cards at the same time period. lol...

Due to the 7900GT(X) porblems. I am creently sticking with the X1900XTX for now... But if nVidia ever gets a chance to fix them as they said, then the 7900GTX is a good choice.

depends if you want conroe, am2 or are just happy with 939 until vista and direct 10 but ill suggest this: opteron 165, dfi lanparty ut ultra-d, sapphire 1900xtx, 2gb g.skill pc4000 hz, creative x-fi extreme music and a ocz powerstream 600watt to power it all...its basically what i recently built and am completely happy with it

I would just get another gig of RAM and something like the card I have now (X850 XT PE) or the nVidia equivalant; the 6800 Ultra.  Stop trying to hijack my thread.. haha, j/k.
