delete shader cache ? How do I do that ?
Delete My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache and My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\xpack\cache (for SF).

I should just add that I had another CTD, despite a 3-4 day break from them.  This time it only happened once, then I restarted and managed to get 5 or 6 rounds in and the server crashed, disconnecting everybody.  Guess clean install/full patch isn't 100% effective at eliminating them, although it certainly helped.

Gone for the complete reinstall and the complete patch.

Fingers crossed.

a funny fix that i have found with the crash to desktop problem when clicking on 'join game'.

when 'join game' appears don't press it straight away, give it a few seconds. then, click 'auto-ready' a few times. there is usually a small sound produced when you click 'auto-ready'. this sound, if it IS going to crash, will NOT be present. only when the sound IS present click 'join game' or use the escape key.

of course, this may not work for everybody but it seems to for me.

Doing the full reinstall of game and patch IS NOT a solution.

Firstly, it doesn't work. I have done this with only negative results.

Secondly, how can reinstalling a game be classed as a 'solution'?!

It's mentioned in the sticky at the top of the board, but I still don't know what to do to solve it.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the game.

Even if it comes down to that, I'm not quite sure what to do.  First off would I remove the game using the control panel Add/Remove, or the Battlefield Eraser tool that EA has?

Then what would the sequence of installation be, I assume it would be BF2--Special Force--Euro Forces--Patch 1.3.

Personally, I'm beginning to wish I'd never patch it, as 1.22 was working fine for me.
i got this matie. i installed 1.3 before special forces. i had to uninstall and reinstall everything making sure i did sf first.

i uninstalled using the uninstall bf2 button through the start menu - ea games - etc.

however, even after uninstalling and reinstalling i still get ctds. i contacted EA re the lightning.fx thing and they couldn't fix it.

Always glad to see the "it's not just me..." problem posts.

CTD - yup (once the join game button shows, regardless if I press it or not)
Server detail missing - That's everybody, at least the resorting once your in the server screen problem was resolved.

Some problems I have been seeing (and didn't before the pirate-eye patch):
- video artifacts - some color changes, or rendering errors that didn't exist before
- Sound artifacts - The ghost sounds (guns, vehicles) around your character
- Glitching - revived without a kit (more fun to play in my mind though - you should automatically be first to get a vehicle )

Thats about all I can think of for now...

Well I finally seem to have BF2 working again, granted, it's only been the vanilla game I've tried, not SF or EF, but so far so good.

I installed BF2, restarted, full patch to 1.3, which took three hours believe it or not, restarted.

Installed Special Forces, restarted, patch to 1.3, restarted

Installed EF, restarted, patch 1.3, restart.

It's a lengthy process but seems to have worked.

any tips for this?
Yes - the EA website put me straight on this one .

Just back your sound hardware acceleration off a notch in Windoze.

Windows sometimes pushes it back to "full" for me, but that is a Windows issue I believe.

Yeah, I did that with a full windows reinstall before step one, just to eliminate that from the equation... it was fine for two days, then a CTD... just one little CTD didn't bother me.... but now a couple of days later I've just had 3 within a couple of hours.

EDIT:  I'm having a break until the next patch, I reckon...

It took me about 2 dyas to get BF2 back up. 1.3 pretty much hosed up the registry, I had to do a fresh install and use the full patch

This post is helpful for the client side crashes, but what is really needed is a fix for all of the servers crashing every 3 games (on SF).

Boris PLEASE HELP.

OR ANYONE PLEAAASE
Problem - Lag or Constant Disconnects from the Sever
Cause - System Dependant
Fix - Since this is system dependant or could be cause by several issues, i will list possible fixes.

1. If running a Dual Core processor, load up Battlefield 2, press alt-tab to go to your desktop. Open up task Manger by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL Once! Then right click on BF2.exe and set its Affinity to 0, Basically this tells it to use only processor 0, not 0 and 1.

2. Go to your BF2 Audio options, and disable VOIP. This can help in some cases.

3. Run Adware/Spyware Scans on your PC to remove unwanted software running in the background. Recommended tools for this are;
Adaware
Spyboy : Search & Destroy
Windows Defender
Spyware Blaster

4. Check your firewalls are not the cause of the problem. Try disabling them such as Windows Firewall, Zone-alarm, and ones inbuilt into Anti-Virus programs. You could also try disabling your Anti-Virus as well to see if it increases performance. This should only be done as a test to see if it helps and that if the Firewall/Anti-Virus is the cause of the problem, once you have tried it remember to turn your firewall/anti-virus back on.

5. If on a Wireless router try plugging it directly into the internet, to see if your lag is been cause by a bad router or interference.

6. In BF2 Audio Options, try running software mode instead of hardware mode.

7. if on a wireless connection this may make it better/worse, or do no change.
Once a connection is established go to run and type "services.msc". Scroll down until you see "Wireless Zero Configuration" and click stop.

8. Try updating PunkBuster, Use the program, pbsetup, found at this websitehttp://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php  to update Punkbuster

9. Change your BF2.exe file and rename it to BF.exe, or basically something different than BF2.exe (Update shortcuts if necessary) On some systems this can provide a performance increase as the graphic card will treat it as a normal game and not run any special optimizations which can actually reduce performance

10. Reduce number of PunkBuster checks

To do this you need to:

1. OK, the first step is very simple, join any BF2 online server which is running Punkbuster, preferably a ranked one.
2. Once you are in, and re-spawned somewhere, press the ` key. This key is located on most keyboards above the tab key and to the left of the 1 key
3. Once you have pressed this, a large white box should drop down with a load of text in it. Type pb_sleep500 and hit the enter key
4. Once you have done this, make sure the box is still up and type pb_writecfg to save your settings

11. [Advanced Users Only] - (Important, Before changing msconfig startup or services, read Warlord's Warnings just below the contents page at the top of this FAQ) Type in msconfig in the run box, and disable unnecessary start up items to try and free up more ram/CPU, this can be more effective than using task manger to close them after start up. In addition check your services in Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services and use this guide http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 to determine what is/not needed. Do note that editing services is about as bad as editing the registry so use extreme cation!!!

Also you can disable the Windows XP visuals to reduce ram/CPU usage, although Windows will look more like Windows 98 you may want to try it.
Right click on My Computer|Properties|Advanced|Performance|Settings for Best performance. This disables all the neat Windows XP looks and makes the PC that little bit faster.

11. You could try upgrading your internet to a faster speed, or connect to servers closer to your location

Problem - Slow/Stuttering performance in Battlefield 2
Cause - Several possible Causes
Fix - This can be caused by several things so here are a list of things to try and improve its performance.

1. Check that your PC can handle Battlefield 2 at your current settings. Graphical lag can often be caused by not having enough RAM to play the game.

Low Settings - 1GB Ram
Med Settings - 1.5GB Ram
High Settings - 2GB Ram

In Addition you will need a processor and graphic card capable of handling the game at the higher settings.
So try lowering your settings to see if performance improves.

2. De-frag your Hard-Drive

3. Try cleaning out your shaders and cache, to do this, go to C:\Documents and Settings\username*\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2 and delete the shaders,
next go to C:\Documents and Settings\username*\My Documents\Battlefield 2\LogoCache and delete the cache.
Try Battlefield 2 again to see if it is better, if not, move your battlefield 2 folder from my documents to your desktop, this put the game onto default settings, as well as cleaning out its cache and shaders again.

4. Run Adware/Spyware Scans on your PC to remove unwanted software running in the background. Recommended tools for this are;
Adaware
Spyboy : Search & Destroy
Windows Defender
Spyware Blaster

5. Use this Program - PCI Latency Tool. http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951 Download and install it. Use it to try setting your graphic card latency to 64 or 128 if it is at a higher number. This can help Improve performance on some systems.

6. Use task Manger to close down unnecessary background tasks, also turn off/disable you anti-virus and firewalls to see if they are the cause of the problem.

7. Re-Install the latest version of Directx from the Microsoft Website,( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx ) then move your battlefield 2 folder from my documents to your desktop, and see if it helps.

8. Use Driver Cleaner to remove your old graphic card drivers and install a new set for your graphic card, then move your battlefield 2 folder from my documents to your desktop, and see if it helps.

9. Check the bios to see if you have given the correct about of Memory to the AGP slot if on a AGP card, i.e. 256mb of Memory if its a 256MB card.

10. In BF2 Audio Options, try running software mode instead of hardware mode.

I solved most of my 1.3 problems surprisingly easy.  after installing EF&AF I let the patch 1.3 run again.  (since EF did not work at all) Since then everything works fine.  another player and friend of mine (brainfish122) did the same and now it runs perfectly for him too, he even could set his graphics higher.  The thing is, on some servers i have a ping between 100 and 130, on such a server its a matter of time before half of the server is disconnected ( when i can i play together with brainfish and we were always kicked on the same time) BUT when i play on a server and my ping is 15 to 30 I'm NEVER disconnected.  I really think its more of a server issue, those CTD's and so.  I have a Intel 3.4 MHz, 2 gigs of ram and a geForce 7800GTX, since i have the game i have always played it on the maximum of settings with no lag at all, when i play the servers where my ping is high (max 130) lag appears, when i play the servers where i have a low ping : No lag at all!!! So thats why i think its a server problem.  A week ago i played for 4 hours straight and no crash at all, yesterday it crashed 2 two times  in 15 minutes, but when i found a good server i could play again without disconnection.

I really hope other people can solve their 1.3 problems by re-patching like brain and I, cause seeing a game like BF2 crash, is just sad.

- This has been my experience too. I get random CTD, locks like 5-10% of the games. Sometimes I join with ESC, sometimes the join button (the ESC way works often better).

- As said earlier in this tread, try to find a good server 24/7 with not so many rotating maps.. seems to help me often.

- I have cleaned the cache like every 7 days.. It seems to help for a while.

- Sometimes even if I want to blame EA.. my friggin router plays a game with me aswell. With a clean pipe to the Internet (when my girlfriend does not need Internet too.. makes a better experience).

Yes, I agree it is a wonderful game!

I am not an expert. Somone may have said this already.  I was getting all the problems mentioned in this forum.  I tried reinstalling my OS becouse I thought it was somthing with my system.  I would crash to my desk top day after day.  I have a very compatent system yet I lagged like my system was 10 years old.

I updated my vid drivers and I have not had one problem with the patch. (other then actual game glitches) This is just me but maybe during the install of the patch it screwed with the vid drivers?

Just a thought.

I spotted an NVidia update a week or so ago(91.31), which came out a month or so after the patch was released.  Since installing it about a week or two ago I've been CTD free.  I had tried about 3 different versions of the Forceware driver including the one on the bf2 cd, but this latest release was the one only one that fixed it for me.

I noticed that too.

Been running 1.22 because I saw the gripes everyone was having. Bought SF and saw no ranked servers for that version. Updated to "1.3" now its nigh on FUBAR.

Followed the advice at the start of the thread BTW.

The main gripe I have is that its taking an age to verify when it has finished loading. Any ideas on what that could be caused by?

Also attempting a patch roll-back to 1.22 by running it doesn't seem to work. Am I gonna have do a re-install and then repatch?
