I'm a mormon too!  Though technically we aren't really called that, and we're actually veering away from calling ourselves that too.

You know, we have all these rules about our religion, but you have to admit that they are actually good rules.  They make sense (no smoking, drinking, caffeine, pre-marital sex), unlike some other religions' rules, of which I can only think of the no-pork rule (sorry jews!).

I live in Utah, and I'm proud too.  I have a friend at work who can do nothing but talk about how different it is here, compared to L.A. where he came from.  To me, it's common to see a police car or two while out driving.
Well the no pork thing makes sense. God said in the bible to always keep food kosher. That's why they do it.

EDIT: When kosher the animal dies quickly rather than slowly like in the slaughter houses, and it's nice to drain the blood from the animal (no I'm not Jewish)!

Would you believe...
I am the oldest of my dad's 33 kids. He has three wives currently and lives in Utah. I've met the sons of the man on the FBI's most wanted list.
Thank God, when my mom found out my dad wanted to become a "plig" when I was five she quickly divorced him and I didn't have the misfortune of being raised that way.
But the stories I could tell...
     No shit, I ain't lying.
I am going to step away from this thread because its too personal, please don't give me negative karma points over this; you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family.
     PS
If you ever met my dad you'd have no idea as he is surprisingly a very good looking, intelligent ( not counting his religion ) person. There are many myths and misperception about these people, and most people have no fucking idea what goes on in America

This has been a good topic and I commend everyone that has been talking about this in a calm manner and not taking things to the extreme to make everyone mad at each other.

Just for clarification, that group you are talking about is not part of the LDS Church (Mormons).  They are a breakaway sect that broke of over 100 years ago from the LDS church.  They broke away a long time ago when the church at said that no one can have more than one wife.  That sect went downhill from there, as can be attested by the recent news programs and FBI most wanted list.  In many ways they are the exact thing the LDS church is not.  Once again, just clearing that up.

No one needs to give me karma.  I just registered on the forums to post in this topic.  I love reading the posts more than posting myself.

Give the Karma to me.   Naw, just kidding.

Yeah, that guy is a member of the FLDS, or Fundamental Latter Day Saints.  They give us Mormons a bad name.

I have to admit though, polygamy was a good thing....  3 or so hundred years ago.  Back when men died oh so often, and women didn't as often.  When the ratio of men to women ends up 1 to 5, of course then it might be a good idea for the small town as a whole to take up 5 wives.  Nowadays, with us cowardly men dying as often as the women now, the ratio stays the same, so no need for polygamy.

I never believed that polygamy was the "root" belief of the LDS church.  With how aggressively we deny using it nowadays, I assumed it was kind of a black spot on our history we wished never happened...

There's a mormon in our contemporary world issues class at school. We poke jokes at him and call him "snake." Don't honestly know why. It's all in good humor though; he's a friend. Seems normal enough to me though, except he isn't allowed caffeine. What's up with that?

As I said there are many perceptions about those people.
1st, Warren Jeffs is a BBBAAADDD man. Every culture has them.
2nd, I actually have a lot more respect for polygamist than I do for historically blind everyday Mormons.
3rd, polygamist are to be respected in that the Mormon church abandoned polygamy at the threat of bombardment and other punitive measures. MY FOLKS DIDN'T BELIEVE IN PROPHESY THAT CAN BE PROVOKED AT BAYONET POINT. [ SORRY ABOUT CAPS ], AND A STRONG CASE CAN BE MADE ABOUT Mormons being good people whatever but what they certainly are NOT is a noble bunch that would refuse to give in to tyranny. Yep, I'm saying that the average Mormon today is historically ignorant, duped to believe that the founding principles of the church should be illegal.
"The sect" has done well in many cases,  and had some public embarrassments. The seven years my grandfather spent in prison could have ended when he signed a affidavit swearing to not financially support his 2nd & 3rd wife, but he  never did sign that letter that was in his cell and instead tried to convert the guards to the TRUE teachings of the Mormon church.
Now, I'm REALLY stepping away from this thread...yikes there goes my karma score.
LOL.  I find it funny how you can defend a group that in your words is led by a BBBAAADDD man, and then try to profess that your an expert in the LDS history.  In my posting I was drawing a line between the two groups not attacking them...except the whole downhill thing but I am guessing you think the same as you said that Warren Jeffs (Their leader), is a bad person.  As for every culture has bad people...yes its true.  In this case, the bad person (Warren Jeffs) is the leader of all these people.  Which in turn will make the people bad if they follow his teachings and example.  If you really think that the LDS people who crossed the wilderness back in the day and founded Utah, would crumble when the US goverment sent one calvery unit there to make sure there was not an army building up there, than you have got the mind of a scifi writer.

I am sure your grandfather is a great and honorable person, but he IS or was a criminal.  I won't feel sorry for him.  Anyone including myself, who breaks the law should pay the price.  I strongly believe that to be a part of this country we need to follow the rules it sets forth.  If this country enforced laws that would be forcing me to break them, I would move to another country.  I hope for your grandfathers sake he is not following Warren Jeffs.

I agree with you yerded, I am done posting in this thread.  LOL.   Have a great Weekend!

Warren Jeffs is just as much the leader of the polygamist as I am the leader of bf2s.com.

I know this is off-topic again, but I just wanted to clarify that what I was asking earlier was if the Vatican had any religious significance to mormons, since they're also a christian religion.

I would tell you, but I've already been confused with a guy who considers himself an expert on Mormonism and thats not what I am. so I say ask your question in a karma as I'm trying to remain out of this thread

actually YES....i live in utah and am not LDS (mormon)and for the most part its pretty benign.  However, having said that  i have heard the conversion process of we are the one true and everlasting religion and if you dont believe, (well you know where you are going.  It does make it a nice place to live since the crime is lower, but I am planning on moving so my kids dont have to live with the (some, not all of the people) hypocritical nature of area.  Sure tolerance is preached but it stops on monday after general conference and its back to normal.  I dont like to pick on other church groups since i wouldnt want mine picked on.
No, you are wrong.....it is what we call Free Agency and it is your choice to join or not.  You must have heard wrong.  In Fact I served a Mission for 2 years in New York City and believe me....NOT once did I belittle a religion or did any other missionary there.   We infact helped others learn more about it.   Yes we believe that God has restored his Gospel through a Prophet in these last days as we call it.  It is just like his church in the days of when Christ was on this earth.   Alot of Utah mormons are very uhmmmm.....how can I say this head strong and think that.   NOT THE CHURCH!!!!!!!  Get it right man.......

So, I am gonna give you +1 karma for xpressing your opinon.  I am sorry for those that have caused you to believe that.  They know not what they do or what they say......because they think they are all that and a bag of chips ok.
oh i believe you, honestly!...the missonaries are very professional and really nice even if sometimes naive, and its hard to hold anything negative against them.they are pretty nice..its the snot nose punk elitist kids in the schools that give you a bad name!  However, once they go on a mission or grow up and away from their overbearing parents they usually see how the real world is.  Like I dont mind the missionaries, but its trying to convert people over that i have a problem with to be honest.  If i tried to convert a LDS person, its an attack, not sharing my love of Jesus Christ, where the LDS faith has no problem with converting to the LDS faith.

Most LDS missionaries are the coolest guys ever... We have them over for dinner every once in a while.

Mormons dont give the Vatican the same respect as the Catholics, we just see him as like a head guy in the Catholic church, as in, hes just another Catholic basically.

I thought that the branch that broke off from the LDS church was called the RLDS (Reorganized LDS). They still practice polygamy.

Mormons come in the same flavors as every other religion.
Just like the rest, they range from Normal to Bat-Shiate-Crazy.
Just like the Catholics. Normal everyday people - to Crusading Firebreathing 'yer all gonna hell!' types.
Just like the Islamics.  Good and Decent - to Jihadi with an IED

On the Normal end of the spectrum;
I dated a Mormon girl for a couple months (right before ETSing from the Army)
Nicest, sweetest, prettiest girl one could hope to meet.
When going out to dinner, I'd have my iced tea - she'd have her 7-up. (no caffeine)
After dinner, I'd have a cigarette - she would not (no nicotine for mormons).
Non-judgemental, she had her beliefs and I had mine.  No problems.

On the Bat-Shiate-Crazy side;
7am on a Saturday.
The damn doorbell is ringing like it's possesed by the spirit of the hunchback of notre dame.
I come to the door, wearing naught but a blanket, sunglasses, hangover, and half-lit cigarette.
The dynamic duo of mormon evangelists want to talk with me about my soul.
"Yeah.. Um..  thanks..  I already have one.  Pretty sure it's paid off already."
Rescued about a minute later by the girlfriend, wearing a bit less than I was (meaning, about nothing).
Apparently, her curiosity was piqued - or she'd noticed the absence of the one blanket (I was wearing).
It would've been truly priceless, had the girlfriend been bringing me a cup of coffee...

[edit: different girlfriend in the two examples.  Mormon girl was a strictly no-sex-before-marriage type.]
Had one of those bad impression meetings with the saturday morning spreading the word duos myself.

It was a hot summer early afternoon musta been 90 F i was doing yardwork had already cut the grass and decided to hack back some tree limbs and some cactus and Yucca limbs so I go to get a machete from the garage. It was kinda dull so I get a metal file from the toolbox and start running the file over each side sharpining the edge.

Now mind you it was hot, I was already sweaty, my allergies were bad my nose was dripping snot, I was pretty "unclean" with dirty clothes and grass debris all over my shoes. Sweat is just rolling off my head I have my back to the garage opening and was trying to catch a glimpse of a baseball game on TV through the connecting door into the living room area...

Well the two guys in white shirts and ties come walking up the driveway just as I turn around from the shady interior of the garage into the sunlight they just kinda both turn a little pale in the face and reverse directions in unison and didn't even say anything...

Well I thought that was weird. Maybe the fact that I was sharpening a large machete with a file scared em' off?..

So as I wipe my nose with the back of my hand I see blood, LOTS of blood... apparently my nose was bleeding from the hot dry air, profusley down my cheek onto my neck and down onto my white t-shirt leaving a blood stain.

Guess that kinda looked creepy to them.
