the only limitations right now is internet connection speed....maybe when server connections are as common as cable/dsl.

This is a fairly good idea but you forgot one thing: EA is the company that owns that BF2 liscense, they would never create an MMO for BF2, and even if they did they would fuck everything up anyway.

I just want some clarification...the article you link to says MMOFPS, and what you are talking about is a MMORPG.  Either way I think it would be pretty sweet.

Theres one called Battleground Europe: World War II Online that does the same thing. The server that the map is run on makes it so the whole map is half of what it is in real life. 10 kilometers in-game = 5 kilometers in the real world.

I've often thought about a MMOFPS for Battlefield, I agree it could be fucken awesome. Imagine a fleet of Blackhawks filled with troops flying into battle. The only problem I see is in playing the same class all the time. People do get bored, and although I would probably choose to become a Sniper, I would definatly miss being in the thick of battle.

I agree that the major problem is the re-production of the human species. All those greenie-wearing liberals always did say we'd destroy ourselve, but i don't think this is what they meant.

Bring it on! EA and DICE, get to work!

Why would peeps say they wouldnt play it? I mean if its stats your worried about, Whats the beef? If you actually do make general, it would really mean something. That would be great, because as it stands right now, being higher ranked than another player doesnt mean squat except to yourself. It might get you that comander spot, but what else does it get you?

Anyways, Theres something out there Like this already(but with the lack of a continuouse map) that costs $18 for 3 or 6 months, i forget, but it has all the same elements of this. Think its something called total BF2 or something.

Id play it, and if it were to come to reality, i think you would see more than 50,000 peeps on at a time. It could be as big as WoW is for those type folks. Xbox 360 has a game comeing out that is Like this, but dang if i can remember the name. Seen it on the E3 show lastnight.

this would be amazing the idea could be implemented since similar idea, or programming is done for Guild wars Factions and World of warcraft, since when you do stuff with the groups it changes the outcome of the world, maybe they could work with guild wars programmers or blizzard programmers, to borrow their code on that perspective, and build on that, the bf2 stuff like he mentioned it in his article, but as long as they have the core for the programming it would be much easier to go on from there instead of starting from scratch it would save of a lot time using a similar system instead of designing the new one which could take months to develop.

Ummm...yes, I saw the HP assmaster.  But some of us don't want that futuristic nonsense.  He was talking about modern day type battles and equipment, not friggin lasers and whatever sci-fi crap that is in that game.

Spacepelle, I understand what you are saying, and I have never played planetside, but I have played Battleground Europe, which I thought sucked ass.  From what I read about planetside, and I could be wrong, but this idea is a lot more different than planetside.  E du go eller?

who knows maybe in 3 or 5 years something like this will be around.

from what i heard bf3 is going to be 256 player! someone emailed me that today. of course it s a rumour, 128 seems more fitting

im still waiting for a civil war era BF game, that would be the shit

Didn't the Jane's company attempt something like this?  I think it was called 'World War' or something where you could connect to this 'World War' using any number of Janes products.  If you wanted to fly you would log in using one of their compatible flying sims if you wanted to drive a tank you could log in using one of their tank sims, etc..  I don't think it ever got off the ground though.  I think it would be an awesome idea to do something like this with BF2 though.

Nova created a 150 player/map game in JO and once you reach about 60 odd players the game starts to lag horribly and hitbox detection goes out the window. Unless EA can in improve on that (possible, since EA is a 49% shareholder of Nova) I wont be wanting to play a 128 player game..

As for hte OP its possible. Divide zones into 'The Americas', 'Oceania' etc. Players come and go as they please with a stats tracking system similar to what BF2 has now (keeps track of global kills, deaths etc.).

Pretty good, except -

Like an RPG, you should have to train to use vehicles/weapons at once. Of course, we can't have 10,000 people fighting all at once - training will maybe consist of - a shooting range for weapons, which you go up weapon skills each x bullseyes, armor and aviation training too.
So it wouldn't be an all out war like battlefield, more like an RPG, for fps fans. you build up your soldier, as your soldier gains levels/ranks he gets more accurate shooting etc.

(as you can tell I play too many RPGs )

Will probably never happen though

its different alright, but not all that much. I must say though that id like to see athiss battlefield mmofps if it was built as planetside, not if built on the bf2-engine. and the engine in planetside is a bit outdated iknow, but an update on that and it could be a reality.

but then again, the idea does not seem to be very far away from planetside, or at least thats what it seems to me.

It would be interesting .. but what happens when a team does capture all the cities?  Does the "losing" team keep at least 1 spawn point to keep the ability to re-capture the cities?  Vehicles re-spawn like they do now?  How are the teams (MEC or US) decided ... just some thoughts
