I bring up the servers list and most of them are red. I try to connect and it says that the server is using an older version. Please help.
Are you runnig an older version? Perhaps your game didn't patch correctly

1) re-patch
2) reinstall game

you need to have BF2 patched up to date to get the biggest number of internet server. The current version is 1.22. Please check on the version you are currently using.
