Hi folks,

I´ve build a new system with the following components:

AMD64 4000+ S.939 tray
Asus A8N-SLI-SE
MSI N7900GTX 2TD512E
Corsair TwinX 1024 DDR400 CL2
Seagate Baracuda S-ATA 200GB
Enermax Liberty 500W PIC-E

This is the 4th system I´ve been building this year, and I think I´m not a noob at all, but:

After I´ve plugged it in and pushed the powerbutton, the monitor doesnt show anything. Theres a message on the montior: cable detected, no signal

The monitor is a CRT19" and doesnt support DVI... So I´ve used the adapters which came along with the GFX.

The mainboard dont do a "peep" or something and the indicators light green (ok)

All cables are connected and all fans are working.

Any ideas?

+1 for every usefull answer and thx in advice
please dont spam around here if you dont have a clue about my problem

Did you plug the power connector into the 7900gtx?

or, try using another video card to boot.

I'd disconnect everything but motherboard, power supply, cpu & heatsink, memory, and an old old PCI video card - see if that POSTs

has the graphics card got two dvi adaptors? if so try them both.

i had a similar problem but my graphics card would only work on the dvi to vga with adaptor, it wouldnt work with the vga to vga for some reason.

its either a memory problem or a video card problem.
try another video card for booting, if not than change memory.

thats highest possibility, or the mobo bios or chipset is fried, i turned on my pc once, heard the normal beep sound and no signal from monitor. its video card, mobo or ram

yeah two dvi adaptors. Tried both of them, even both mounted and only one mounted on each of the DVIs

hm, call me dumb, but what is a vga to vga adaptor? My graphics card has two dvis only.

Be sure that all PCI/PCI-Express cards are fully seated.  Also, does the computer beep if  you pull the memory out and try to boot it?

Might be silly but have you got the Graphics card in the correct slot .....is the board set of a single card in the BIOS????

Damn it, the case has no speakers, havent seen it before. Could be the reason why I cant hear any peeps. Where is my damn screwdriver

Ok.  Here's how to know what's the story with your stuff.

First of all, And I know this is stupid, make sure all of the power connectors are in the right place and they've all made a tight connection.  These are the Board, Process or and PCI-X Power Connectors.

Now, make sure you only slot HALF your Ram for initial testing.

Sometimes their BIOS Beeps don't get heard through the PC Speaker.  So plug in your headphones.

OK.  So you've made sure all compenents are seated tight, and plugged in.  Leave the HDD and DVD's out of the mix for a lil bit.

Now where you said you get fans, but no sounds or video, that's actually a good sign.  Chip isn't on the path to burn it self out, and all connections are ready.  Your BIOS doesn't seem to be ready for your stuff yet.

OK, how to fix.

First if it's SLI make sure you've got the board set to be in the NON SLI mode.  (Stupid but again sometimes overlooked).

Now when the computer is off and you're ready to trip the power switch, switch your cmos jumper to reset the BIOS.  Make sure there's no power to the power supply while doing this.  You want it reset.
Count 5 on the CMOS reset and put the jumper back to the ready position.

NOW, HOLD DOWN YOUR INSERT KEY and power up the computer (plug power supply back in, or turn it back on).

Hopefully you should see your splash screen or whatever comes up and be able to get to the bios to make sure everything is as it should be.

Now if this doesn't work but you still get fans and NO Beeps, you may need an OLD PCI Video Card just to get into the BIOS.  I keep an old 1MB and 2MB PCI (Old Skool Original, YO) around for just such an emergency.
Then I do the power off, reset CMOS, hold down insert and power on computer trick and viola, I get the BIOS.

Hope this helps, this is my standard trouble shooting procedure, honed on thousands of SHITTY custom builds for Hewlett Packard clients.  Think, wildcat video cards, Fire GL's, All-in-wonders, Nvidia Quatro's, I could probably get yer BIOS to beep the yankee doodle doo.

Any problems let me know.

I had a similar problem one of the tiny cables from the power supply wasnt plugged into my Graphics card. You might be having that problem not sure though.

OP

Madopps posted some good info. I skimmed over this thread, and some suggestions, bypassing some of the more obvious "seated components" stuff:

Plug the CRT monitor into another machine, using the same power input. If it doesn't turn on, well, there's a problem. Switch power input. If it still doesn't turn on, your monitor's fried. Try another monitor in your new system. If you don't have a spare CRT, you are sure to be able to find one for around $10 at a pawn shop, as it costs more to dispose of them than to take a loss selling them at a cheap price.

If this proves to not be the problem, unhook all unnecessary peripherals from your system, and turn it on. Hooray if it works. If it doesn't, try out another video card. Use a spare PCI-e, if you can wrangle one (helps if you've bought that particular component at a local store, so as to avoid huge RMA payments, which incredibly cost more than having it shipped to you in the first place), as getting an old PCI card to work won't help you much here (though if one of these won't work, it's more likely being the motherboard than your specific video card).

A somewhat riskier approach will involve you testing this video card in another machine. It's unlikely that a damaged card will mess up a motherboard but...you never know.

Check your motherboard's manual for error codes. ASUS manuals, at least in online PDF format, will usually have these in one section or another.

Slightly more in-depth approach if the above doesn't work.

First, pull out everything from the case. Everything. Disconnect everything. After that, seat your CPU and mount the heatsink/fan, seat only one single stick of RAM in the slot physically closest to your CPU, install the motherboard into the case, mount your graphics card firmly in the 16x slot physically closest to your CPU, install your harddrive and make the appropriate connection to the motherboard, again in the connector physically closest to your CPU, make sure -all- power connectors are properly connected. Connect your monitor to your graphics card, and finally connect power to your PSU and boot. If this fails, replace the RAM you have seated with another stick, and go through all your sticks like that, always only one at a time, and always seated closest to the CPU. If you still can't get it working, download a datasheet/layout of the motherboard from the technical support section of the ASUS site, find them screwdrivers of yours, pull out a PC speaker from another case, connect it to the appropriate connectors as seen in the datasheet and powercycle that same process all over once again. That covers pretty much everything you can possibly do to test your components without using other rigs.

Back again after a long night of testing all the hardware (and some beers too).

Situation now: GFX is working properlly, RAMs are working (placed in my buddies rig).

Tested my rig with my buddies ram and connected a speaker, no beeps at all and a black screen. Every fan is working. CMOS resetted twice. Plugged a PCI Radeon 9250SE nothing happend.

I´ll have a try with another 939 AMD64 CPU and also with another socket 939 board later this day.

Damn it I´m pretty pissed and I guess my CPU is screwed. Havent tested the MoBo yet with another CPU, will do so later...

Only positive, the dealer is only 50km away from me and has some CPUs in stock. If he will be as customerfriendly as I know him, a conversion will be no problem at all. So, I hope its only the CPU and not the motherboard (arg, I dont want to unmount everythin and also the MoBo isnt in stock atm).
