I'm split neatly down the middle on this one. I have logged about 50 hours with each gun, and have to say each has its advantages and disadvantages. If you're Assault and you want frag grenades, you have to go with the G3 by default, so + points there for versatility. If you want to be a sniper, but want teamwork points, choose the L85A1 and set it to single shot. + points for being almost as zoomed (and accurate ) as an SVD.
In close quarters the L85 is notoriously inaccurate. After the 3rd or 4th shot your crosshairs are Support-gunner-while-running-esque, so forget it. It takes pretty good burst control, avoidance and accuracy to milk more than one kill per mag out of the L85 in close quarters (not saying it's impossible as I manage it, but it's tough). - points for inaccuracy.
The G3 though has balls, and since you're limited to 20-shot mags you'll probably be more conservative in your gunfights. You've got body armor, so you should outlast your enemy long enough to be a bit more judicious with your ammo (i.e., no need to spray and pray). - points for low ammo count, + points for the kit having body armor.
At range, both guns have their advantages but the L85 wins (much more zoom, and both guns are a 1 hit headshot kill). + points to the L85.
The L85 also comes with the most un-balanced kit in the game, in my opinion (Medic), so + points for having the ability to heal and revive as well as snipe and (if you're good) close-quarters pwn.
In the end the G3 is probably the best Assault gun in the game, but it gets outclassed by the L85. But adjust for your own playing style--if you don't want to be bothered flopping into prone to shoot at every distant enemy you see, then by all means use the G3, it's vastly superior to the L85 in close quarters. Besides, the L85 used to be a LOT worse pre-1.2, it's actually not all that wildly inaccurate now.

Oddly enough, my older brother called me savage for using it... I really like the way that four/five kills can be managed with the G3 per clip (aim for the head at close range...). Only the support guns and the G3 seem to give me the need to not reload. I just wish they gave the G3 six clips instead of four.strangelove wrote:

only drawback is small clips and if i could swing it at the enemy when i ran out of ammo i would still pick it over other guns

G3 all the way... 20 rounds are more than enough geez. 20 shots = 2-3 kills already, and reload speeds are decent.

I like the G3... seams like I can take the L85 and spray a guy down just to have own me with the F2000.
It was close for me, but in the end the longer effective range on the L85A1 won it for me. I chose it as my first unlock and I gotta say, I like it better than the M16, and depending on the map it's much better than the AK's. Sure for maps like Karkand and Sharqi the power and full aotu accuacy of the AK's are better, but there are just so many times when the scope and added zoom with the L85A1 make all the difference.

The G3 is perfect for the job of an assault trooper, it's powerful and devastating at close and medium range, and gives you hand grenades for your assaults.
The L85 is a much more support-style weapon, as is fitting for a medic. He hangs back and then patches up the Assault troopers after the attack. The L85, in its mini-sniper role, is an excellent support weapon at medium range, and has the option of full-auto for when you need to charge in with the rest of them.
Overall, it's a very tough call. I've personally gotten to prefer the medics G36, because I've been playing my medic a lot more aggressively since I unlocked it. They both have weaknesses, in that the G3 is (at least, I think) pretty poor at long range, while the L85's auto-fire has dreadful recoil.
The G3 edges it for me, but comparing the two directly doesn't make all that much sense, since they're designed as very, very different in the first place.
