Ive had my computer for about a year now, and for about 6months now, its been doing this....

Whenever im in a graphics demanding environment fo more than 15 minutes(It does this in BF2 and COD2, but ot HL2 or AOE2) my computer either restarts, goes to a black screen where the speakers make weird noises, or just completely freezes. This really pisses me off....

I found a solution by putting a large floor fan next to my computer, and taking off the side panel, but even with that, my computer has this problem sometimes...

I cant imagine why Heat would be an issue, I have adiquite cooling, and the CPU temps never go above 42 celcius...And the graphics card has an Arctic cooling HSF on it too....Ive ran Memtest86, and no errors have come up...I have managed to get out of a frozen state, and I got all sorts of ATI messages saying a whole bunch of stuff...I tried to return my card awhile ago, but CompUSA wouldnt take it back cuz it wouldnt crash in their machines...

heres the specs...

ATI 9800PRO
AMD 64 3200@ 2.2GHZ
2GB(4x 512MB) DDR400 Corsair XMS
Asus A8V Deluxe
Audigy 2 ZS "GAMER"
Antec 520W PSU
NEC DVD Burner
Sony DVD drive
2x 160 GB Seagate 7200.8
D-Link Wireless G

thanks, feel free to ask any questions if needed...

that happens to me too in BF2 though. Some things are wierd. I can play CS:S at full graphics 6xAA, HDR but BF2 is mainly on low and medium settings no AA and no shawdows or lighting.

Right off the bat sounds like a RAM issue.  Sound like Window is picking up the slack and dumping it's virtual memory.  First thing is to upgrade your RAM.

OCZ (I think) has 2 gig's of matched ram for 250 or so.

AS far as cooling.  Look in your case and see how many extra fans you have slots for.

If you have no slots, make them.

Take a dremel with a metal cutter.  Go buy a few cheap 5 dollar fans (Gaurds are a few bucks and make them look nice.

Measure the circle of the fan and cut it out.

I have two cases (Well four accualy)... ok, two I am using.  THis one I cut a hole in the top (Most of the hot air collects at the top of the case so it's a great place for an exhaust fan.

On my second case I needed extra cooling for the CPU and GPU/  So I cut a hole in the side of the case to blow right onto it.  Both woks great, it's cheap, and you customize it.

Now you can use a dremel, or you can use a drill with a use a hole cutter.  These are mostly used for wood, however since it is just a thin piece of aluminum, it will work just fine.

***IMPORTANT***

You MUST either take everything out of your case (Recomended), or cover everything.  Little pieces of metal on your mobo = fried mobo at best.

AFter you are done, make sure you get a can of blow off (Insert joke there).  You don't want one piece of aluminum in you case after your done.

I hope this helps.  If you need any more info, feel free to IM me.

Best wish's all.
Chris

O and btw, to get Windows to stop the auto restart bs.....

Goto start / controll panel / system

Click the advanced tab, the under Start up and recovery" click settings.

Then just unclick "Automatic restart"

Also unclick send admin alert.  That will keep yea from ctd'ing when that bs pops up.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a cooling issue.

Again, check to see if there are any extra slots for intake / exhaust fans and throw them in.  If not, fab some up.

Good luck!

Cooling looks fine.

*scratch head*

Have you tried "Drive cleaner pro"?

It will remove all you GPU driver files.  When you install a new driver it leaves old driver files still in your comp.  Doesn't nessesarly overwite them all.  And you can get conflicts from it.

Drive cleaner pro will earse every gpu file in your comp.  Just uninstall the driver, run drive cleaner, reboot and reinstall the driver.

Might be surprised, might fix it right up.

*Note* If your using a Nvidia card and mobo, it has the tendensies to earse some of the mobo's drivers as well, no biggie, you will just need to reinstall them too.

OK, I seem to have fixed it...While I was looking around for a new Driver, I came across this...

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=179047

They said that lowering the AGP rate to 4x would help, and guess what...It did!

I guess its a problem with the 9800Pro series...Anyway, thanks for your help and all the suggestions you gave me...Im sure they will help down the road...
